I'm going to attempt to build this kit that I bought a few years back. I've looked thru many of your build logs which is invaluable knowledge. I know that I'm probably not going to have a perfect model if I'm successful at completing this boat. I guess the best way to learn is just dive in.

Mike, you'll get plenty of help. Just ask in your build log. Folks around here are very helpful.

MikeB4 reacted to Bender in Tying blocks to yards or masts.
I was asked to repost this. This is an easy way of tying blocks to yards or mast. I have also used this to tie blocks to the underside of tops.
I start out with thicker thread. A little trial and error with different threads to get the look I want. Notice I have the thread folded three times and use a clip to hold the thread tight.
I use smaller thread to wrap around the thicker thread. I start out with a slip knot tied in the thinner thread, and stick the loop and loose end of the thicker thread through the knot.
The thinner thread has two ends. The end that pulls the slip knot tight and the end the pulls the loop through the knot.
I pull the loop tight against the thicker thread and use a second clip to hold the thinner thread in place.
I start wrapping the thin thread (The end that pulls the knot tight.) around the three layer of thick thread and the loop of the thin thread.
I make 7 to 10 or more wraps. Trail and error to get the look.
While wrapping and after, you have to hold the wraps to keep them from unwinding. Remove the one clip. Take the end of the thread you've been wrapping and pass it through the loop of the thin thread.
Still while holding the wraps to keep them from unwinding, pull on the other end of the thin thread to pull the loop tight around the end of the thin thread. Pull the thin thread tight but not too tight. If is too tight, it will be hard to pull the thicker thread through. Also, as you pull on the end of the thinner thread it will pull the loop and the other end on the thin thread into the wrap.
You now have a loop and a loose end of thicker thread sticking out each end of the thinner thread. Pulling the loose end on one side pulls the loop in on the other side. Put a block in one loop and pull the loop tight.
Slip the other end over a yard or mast. You can also start out with the loop already around something.
Pull that loop tight.
Add a drop or two of CA glue, and when it is dry snip of the loose ends. This picture shows two block tie to a yard.

MikeB4 reacted to johncole in Puritan by johncole - Mamoli - 1/50 scale - 1885 America's Cup
Thank you gents. I like how it's coming together, but that's not to say I haven't made some mistakes! Previous modeling experience helps me recover from them.
I got the waterline figured out, then masked and painted the 'red lead' below.
Next up, getting the centerboard finished. That will complete the hull, then it's on to the deck details (YES).

MikeB4 reacted to JesseLee in Scottish Maid by JesseLee - FINISHED - Artesania Latina - 1:50
My 1st build log. It's been a while since I've had a wood ship kit to build. A new friend understood my longing & surprised me by mailing me this Scottish Maid kit. The box came in from the USPS & I felt like a kid at Christmas.
Here are some pics of what's in the kit...

MikeB4 reacted to egkb in HM Schooner Ballahoo by egkb - FINISHED - Caldercraft - 1:64 Scale - First Proper Wood Build
Latest Gossip from ENN (Eamonn News Network )... Much Sanding Phase 2 is complete with rather satisfying results ( a Very Very smooth hull form) just a smidge of filler required at the stern (where the upward sweep of a plank meets the lower part of the transom) once that hardens I'm onto Mild Sanding Phase 1, there may not even be a Phase 2 here... Which will be a bit of a Result!!
I filled out a section of the Bulwarks up for'ard to allow the Bow Piece to fit in place (you may recall from a while back the problem I had encountered where the 2 Bulwarks meet at the bow, ie no or too small a gap for the Bowsprit & the Bow Piece) hopefully you can see it in the photos.
I also made up the Stand, which is straightforward and not as Gawd Awful looking as I feared (I'm toying with how I will present the boat when finished, she may end up on Blocks representing a slipway, with the angle matching the angle of the keel to keep the deck level! but that is a bit away yet )
Thanks For Checking In Folks
Eamonn
BTW The Period Ship Handbook pt 2 arrived this morning, WOW they are going to be a brilliant resource, thanks for the recommendation Nigel & Kester, and Dee Dee for the advice on where to get them!! Abebooks are Deadly, and I'd advise all to take a looksee for those hard to find books (by the way 'Deadly' is an Irishism for Pretty Darn Good! )

MikeB4 reacted to Alfons in Gloucester Fishing Schooner by Alfons - BlueJacket Shipcrafters - scale 1:48 - first build
Hi all.
This project, beeing my first build, was started in september 2011. Having thought about building a wooden ship for many years i finally got around and ordered my Schooner from Blue Jacket in the US.
In MSW 1.0 I maintained a build log since day 1, sadly, all the information were lost during the crash. However, all of the pictures are still on my hard drive. In below posts I have added all the pictures in somewhat of an order, this post contains the pictues of the current status of the build.
The Blu Jacket kit is of excellent quality, containing a solid hull and a small box of britannia castings. There are no laser cut wooden parts, all parts are built from profiles and sheets. The instructions are thorough and contains a number of hand drawn sketches, and also a number of pictures of the prototype build by Blue Jacket. The length of the finished model will be about 33¨, and I plan to make my own glass (or similar) display case. There will be no sails, but a full running rig.
I really enjoy my new hobby, and starting a build log at MSW has been extremely helpful and encouraging.
Thanks for looking in, and I hope you will follow my progress along the way.
/Alfons

MikeB4 reacted to allanyed in CA glue question
jud
Say you have a 30 foot long plank, thus about 14 frames on a fully framed model. I used to use aliphatic glue on all but two or three frames. On those couple, I would use gel CA to get an almost instant bound to hold the plank in place. I have since quit CA altogether as I hate the fumes and use aliphatic and clamps as needed to hold the part in place until the glue cures.

I would prefer PVA (Carpenters wood Glue) when gluing wooden items together. If you choose CA glue, take Brians advice and mix it with titebond

MikeB4 reacted to foxy in HMS Victory by foxy - Heller - 1/100 - PLASTIC - with Dafi's etch & resin set
Well time for a change, and seems most go for the guns, so gun's it is.
I will be working on these throughout the build.
First the barrels come in two parts and the trucks in five parts, then there's Dafi's King George crest and eyebolts, plus trunnion caps .
Made up the barrels.
The trucks.
'Hey presto'.
Added trigger caps to the 32 pounders out of plastic.
Added eyebolts and KG Crest.
60 done for the lower and middle decks.
Lower gun has the flintlock trigger from Dafi's etch, plus the KG motif on the barrel.
More soon.
