This is what I do with it....

I made the leather sleeves (Greek: Askomata) to prevent water from coming in through the lower oar-ports.
Note: the ports need to be fairly large, because the oar blades must fit through them to be able to pull them in...and to replace broken oars from the inside.

First I glue the oar to the copper sliding plate and tholepin on the inside. Then I slide the sleeve inside the hole and fix it with a tiny drop of CA glue on the inside.

Then I close the sleeve with tweezers and a piece of string.

And finally I paint the sleeve leather brown.
 
And that was my first oar! 

I never thought attaching oars would be easy, but I had plenty of time to think about this....over a year by now.
At some point I realised it's a must to build a jig for this. I want my oars to line up neatly without support, because I think that will look most spectacular.
So, this is the result of scratching the back of my head for a year...
Behold...."le jig". (that's French Canadian I think )


The ship is fixed so it can't move...at all...and made a support for the oars at the right height.
With a top layer of foamboard, so I can pin the oar blades in an upright position.
I'll do a dry fit with all the oars to see where they must end on the foamboard and mark the spots.
This will result in a slightly curved line following the curve of the side of the ship...so not a straight line.
 
I don't think I can do more to be well prepared, so tomorrow this final chapter begins.
I hope it will end well...scary stuff. 
 

Meh...I mean...in Dutch:  transparante anti slip dopjes voor onder de kast...en hele kleintjes op de standaard, zodat de romp niet verschuift.

But, for now...I had to finish the display stand before I do the oars. When they're on...the ship will become an almost untouchable hedgehog.
So better do it now....(warning...picture heavy explanation)

Replaced the short bolt and nut holding the 2 slabs together with a brass 25 mm M4 bolt.
A 5 mm brass tube...30mm long over the bolt...secured with 2 part epoxy glue.

The "cradles" supporting the hull.
Made of 2 layers of 0,4mm brass sheet. Two layers of thin sheet glued together makes it a stiff construction.
A hole in the lower sheet to attach the 4mm tube that will slide into the 5mm tube on the base.

Ready...some final bending needed to make it fit the bottom of the hull.

My "less is more" stand finished.

For anyone thinking about this kit, a strong endorsement from me.  Really terrific materials and instructions -- and really interesting to build.

After planking the stern and closing the gun ports with walnut strips the last remaining bulkheads got filled with plywood and sanded to create the largest possible surface to fix the single planking.
Unfortunately a few of the very fragile bulkhead stubs broke off during sanding the hull, but not major issue, will be a easy fix.
The lasercut parts for the keel are cleaned up and glued together along with a basswood strip to form the false keel. As the hull below the waterline will be painted the keel is made from basswood, the upper stem and stern parts are walnut.
While waiting on the glue to set I have constructed already the gunport boxes for the canon dummis from the lasercut parts.

I am already very excited about the Kolderstok kit of the Zeven Provincien which is supposed to be released at the end of the year.

This is a long overdue update.. No Excuses...
.The Deck was planked with ease .. the only thing I would have done of to put reinforcing blocks under the deck where the cleats are.
The deck hatches and cabin went together with ease. I planked the hatches and cabin in various wood.
The BBQ ... well I think it is was covered with copper tape. and semi blackened.  I did NOT want to put any paint on the boat.

This is my first sea scene. made from plaster of Paris with blue paint and water to mix.

When the boat is complete it will be screwed to the base. Then clear silicon will be placed on the water area and be given a ripple texture finish.
Never tried this before so fingers crossed and luck on my side.
The batten around the base will be removed and some nice timber used to smarten it up a bit.
Quite a lot of work on the metal work still to be done and blackened before fitting.

Having opened the kit I am very pleased with my choice and the contents of the box.

 

The instructions are in many languages and are easy to read. English is enclosed in a Grey box. As below.
 

The Barrels are OK BUT  I will make my own.  Blocks look Ok as do all the other bits.

 

Will take more photos when I've opened the packets.

Two sheets of drawings and assembles. One being Double sided.

The plywood is Pear faced and the laser work is Excellent. The first sheet is very thin with no cracks But with some laser burning.

When preparing parts for the next modelling session, I noticed a slight difference between our model and how it looks in the manual...

Apparently some parts are not permanent, but a temporary alignment jigs. They are not supposed to be permanently glued. D-oh!
I was such an idiot  Followed the manual blindly, like a Lego. Without thinking "what the heck is this part" and "wonder how it is used down the line".
So I did some brute demolition with pliers, cutters and dremel disk cutter. Daria was not involved, since it is a very delicate process - one incorrect move with pliers - and bulwarks will crack. Bulwarks end up with no support when you are supposed to glue finish planking to them.

Phew! Will read manual more careful next time. Daria also confirmed that I am an idiot, and now reads the manual after me, to make sure I haven't missed anything. Guess it is a good thing in a long run

A quick up-date........
 
After a bit or re-organisation the workshop now has an area dedicated to the Triton build.
 

 
The first frame has now been completed. I'm thinking about adding some pegs (tree nails?) Assuming that these would have been about an inch in diameter on the original my calculations come out at a gnats whisker over 0.5 mm diameter. I'll try and source some brass wire and see how it goes.
 

 

 
I played safe and worked on a frame from the centre of the hull (0). It currently has excess material at the top which will be trimmed later, but in the meantime this provides support for the acrylic brace that I hope will prevent any movement in the wood.
 
I've also had a go at making a height gauge for transferring vertical measurements from the plan to the model.

Made some new supports and made them level with the top of the timbers and sanded down the corners.

The wood is of very good Quality troughout, the Accuracy of the Laser cut parts like Bulkheads, Keel, Stem and Stern parts is excellent. Walnut strips are included for the single Planking and Furniture. The figures and carvings are casted from resin and obviously also very well done.
The Assembling guide consists of 6 sheets of Drawings plus a photo-illustrated booklet.

Continuing with the first layer of planking.   Going slow but steady.

I deviated a bit from the instructions on the planking placement and gunport openings.  I've decided to place the planks in continuous pieces over the gunports and then go back and cut out the openings later.  All the dummy gunports have been glued to the backside of the planks in their appropriate positions and marked on the exterior of the planking in order to cut them out.  I'll let you know how this works out.

The bow will need a little work to fill the gaps in the planking.

 

 
I do have one question.  The kit drawings show the gunports, more or less, perpendicular to the sheer of the ship. The gunports shown on the drawing from Herman Ketting's book shows them vertical.  Although I personally like the looks of the ports that follow the sheer should they be vertical?

today framework removed from positioning jig, started fastening some of the stringers, quite fragile construction in the moment no fractures so far...
Am thinking of leaving a part of the port side hull open for a look beneath the deck...., beneath the wales

Hi all,
Because of the fact that I lost my interest and the enthusiasm for some of my started models, these were canceled and the corresponding build logs deleted.
Other projects such as the build of the Bounty, Gunboat William and the HMS Endeavor take a break.
 
After a visit to the Batavia shipyard in Lelystad / Netherlands, I finally started to realize my long-standing desire to build a model.
The Kolderstok kit was ordered and the construction began, this was in July already. Unfotunately I didn't take pictures from the beginning, so the Photos below show the Status as of today.
