    Beak-head framing....

After clean up and trimming of the bulkhead, I began building the 14 catwalk panels.  First, using tracing paper to create a precise fit for each of the panels, as they must fit perfectly between each frame member.

Then planking each frame with a uniform gap (used the thickness of my steel ruler to maintain consistent gaps).... all panels were glued in place.

Here's a little closer look at the finished bulkhead with outside morning light.... note the addition of the two "heads".
Some clean up of glue stains still to be done prior to applying golden oak stain.

The cowlings (bulwarks) have been cut out and, seen here, painted red on the inboard side....

Sorry about the lack of caffeine but the results speak for themselves.

Great to hear that your health is improving Walter, I look forward to seeing the next update. Regarding the workroom situation, I sometimes find myself in the same mood. I find that just putting one or two items away is all the kick I need to feel that I have accomplished a great deal.  One of my woodworking heroes James Krenov would simply pick up the broom and sweep the floor when this happened to him.

Glad things are getting better.  It's family and you first, then the hobby.

    Walter,

Good to hear back as I was wondering if everything is ok.   When the turbulence settles, you'll know it's time to get back to the model.  I'm happy to hear Linda is stable and you're finding time to take care of you.

    Hi Nenad

Yes!  You most certainly can do a great job on the steering wheel, even though you may doubt your ability to do so.  From what you've showed us, there's nothing that you haven't been able to do so far.

I'm looking forward to your next update.

    Cheers

    Hi Walter

Nice to hear back from you and that you're taking more care of your health.  I know it sounds like a cliche, but health will always trump over our hobbies, so, take your time and make sure you're fit and well before getting back to your shipyard.

    All the best!

    Hi Dave

I'm just sitting here shaking my head in disbelief! I can't even imagine being able to replicate what you've done.

You, Sir, are doing one hell of a fabulous job on those carvings.

Cheers and all the best for the weekend.

    Preparing ...

Outside dia of wheel is 16mm, which means ...

Cross-poles are 0,5mm on scale ( wheel No 1 at drawing) and have to be a bit enlarged to toothpick width, to be able to make even minor curve, which will look as on wheel No 2. Not more. This is final limit of enlarging to keep wheel elegant look.

Ok, cross-poles are ( theoreticaly) resolved ... still outer ring to figure out how

Thx PatriCk, Dave Nigel and others

And now, challenge itself! Steering wheel. Yesterday I start with cropping details from my pdf plans enlarged to 100% of their size and importing them in AI ... Wheel box is 21mm long, 8 mm wide and 10-12mm high ... Steering wheel has only 15mm outside dia ! Whoa! It will be very very interesting ... IS it possible to reproduce even a part of making process I have seen on MSW how masters do?

Well Mark, it took me most of the day, but I have now completed your log from post one to here. Wonderful work, and I am heartened to see I am not the only one who goes through the deconstructions/reconstructions phases. It looks like painstaking work so for, but I would certainly be pleased with the result!

I find it's not hard, Jeff.  What is a kit?  Some wood, some string, some plans, and some usually very bad instructions unless it's one of new ones*. In this case, you source the plans, the wood, etc.  It's not overwhelming if you just think of it as a series of steps.  I actually wrote down a series of steps/mileposts before I began.  Well, that list has expanded and things moved around a bit.  But that works.

Thanks for the complement.  My goal is to build this one the best I can and the next one will be even better.

*I do hear good things about the instructions written by Chuck, Dusek, and Maristella.  I hope other companies will pay attention.
