Omega1234 reacted to MESSIS in Eagle of Algier 1753 by Mirabell61 - FINISHED - 1:48 - Chebec - Nils Langemann
thank you Nils for the interesting infos about the sails. Isnt "normal laundry spray-stiffener" a little weak to give a stiff blowed sail?
Anyway.... am following your every step 😎. Anxius to see this masterpiece till the very end.

Omega1234 got a reaction from GrandpaPhil in SHADOW by Omega1234 - FINISHED - Scale 1/300 - Luxury 60m Mega Yacht
Hi folks
Many thanks for all of your comments and Likes!
Well.....tonight, I had one of those ‘Oh wow” moments. You see, after much hesitation and deliberation, I finally bit the bullet and attempted Shadow’s boarding ladder. It didn’t turn out too bad, I reckon.
Whilst I was at it, I also added the aerials that sit atop the sky deck’s roof. Added to that, I also fashioned three flags, two that adorn the aft decks and the third that sits proudly at Shadow’s bow. A slight breeze has set them gently fluttering whilst Shadow’s floats serenely on the water..
I hope you like the photos.
Have a great weekend!
Cheers.

Hi Denis
Ahhhh! How could I have misinterpreted Mark’s comment. Doh.
Actually, I came up with the idea of using shoe polish years ago out of sheer laziness. It didn’t take me long, however, before I realised that shoe polish is waxy and therefore, doesn’t need any varnish or glazing to protect it! Bingo😀
Thanks also, for your comments about Shadow. I dunno about “a world record’, but, I’m just happy that you and everyone else on MSW like it.
Enjoy the rest of the week and have a great weekend!
Cheers.

Omega1234 got a reaction from Canute in Kathryn by Mahuna - FINISHED - 1:32 - Skipjack Based on HAER Drawings
Hi Frank
Brilliant as usual.
Also....Being able to see the full hull shots has made me think...”Low, squat and powerful”. There’s no doubt that these ships were powerful and hardy; befitting their role as working ships.
Without a doubt, you’ve captured the essence of these ships beautifully.
Cheers.

Added the fender piers.
And spent a day cutting up cork pieces (previously made from hand-sanding blocks). They needed to be much smaller in size and have at least one flat surface showing, like a fracture line. Made a few samples of cork rock beds for painting tests.
The last sample looks the best for showing the silt stains from previous floods and tidal lines.

Omega1234 reacted to colinmaclock in Albertic by michael mott - FINISHED - Scale 1:100 - RESTORATION - Bassett-Lowke Model
Michael,
Do you have a colour wheel or chart? sometimes the oddest combinations of primary, tertiary and secondary colours work out what you want. Choosing the right base colour to start with is the work half done. Most importantly, in your type of work, use natural light to do you paint matches! Do no trust indoor lighting, even if it is colour balanced.
Cheers,
Colin

Omega1234 reacted to colinmaclock in Albertic by michael mott - FINISHED - Scale 1:100 - RESTORATION - Bassett-Lowke Model
Hi Michael,
It is hard to determine weather the original paint on the hull is lacquer based or enamel. To apply a final clear or semi-gloss finish over your paint may help blend in the luster. Caution though, do a small isolated test area in case of a reaction causing blistering. This occurs sometimes when using different brands with different bases. I found that using an old piece of nylon stocking to burnish a finish to match old and new painted areas can work as long as the new paint has had enough time to cure hard.
Cheers,
Colin

Hi Colin you can say that again.
Thanks for all the positive comments they are much appreciated.
I have been working away at the colour matching slowly adding some gloss to the mix to bring up the lustre, this picture shows some improvement and the centre section is getting quite close.
The black still needs more work as well. The photographs can be brutal but they do help to keep one humble.
Here is where it started.

Mott old boy, matching the paint and finish below the waterline will be a challenge indeed. You are doing a magnificent job, glad to see you back at it again.

I passed another milestone today. I turned up the wood inserts for attaching the funnels, these are made of Cherry, and the tops will be painted Black.
Also did a little more matching of the bottom paint.

Omega1234 reacted to Mirabell61 in Eagle of Algier 1753 by Mirabell61 - FINISHED - 1:48 - Chebec - Nils Langemann
Christos,
I have`nt made up my mind yet for considering the sail setting / resp. wind direction, but the running rigging shall allow later to set all to optimal conditions. Perhaps even a large sail could be slightly furled towards the yard.... Should the sail require a slight "bulbed" shape, I may perhaps build a thin and shaped stainless steel wire into the bottom bolt ropes for appropriate curvature.
For conditioning the cotton fibre cloth I usualy apply normal laundry spray-stiffener (like my wife uses for ironing shirts, etc.). that will be done before the sewing pattern is brought to the cloth by means of soft pencil-lines....

what about the wind Nils? Are you going to use Gac 400? How do you plan to go over the wind issue?
