uss frolick reacted to KenW in Providence by KenW - FINISHED - 1:48 - Colonial Sloop
The wales have been sanded and the gun port measurements verified.  So I painted several coats of a red paint that I created to the gun ports and painted the wales with several coats of Mars Black.  I sanded between each coat with 320 grit sandpaper and with 600 grit before the last coat. I think it looks good so I’m ready to start planking the hull above the wales.

uss frolick reacted to druxey in Speedwell 752 by Greg Herbert - 1:48 scale - the saga continues
Finally, after a wait of almost three years, Greg Herbert was able to travel this weekend and retrieve Speedwell from David Antscherl's workshop. The model had been marooned in Canada due to covid after having the carved works made and fitted. Speedwell (she was temporarily re-christened Speednaught) is now heading back to Maryland with her rightful owner for rigging. The saga will continue soon....

uss frolick reacted to Admiral Beez in The Ship of the Line, by Brian Lavery
I’m enjoying the book as an introduction to the subject matter.   Indeed, HMS Spartiate is/was French, making Heller’s 1/150 Le Superbe a good match, but the British made changes to her rigging, boat stowage (on spars rather than on deck), paint scheme, etc.   This book doesn’t cover this info as well as I’d perhaps like, but it’s a start, and an interesting one.

That book is old and dated. Since Volume 2 offers little, I long ago gave it away. Have you seen the NMM plan of Spartiate? Her stern is lovely, as she is French! But Lavery's book deals mostly with British ships, not to mention his taking up valuable space with otherwise interesting British history. If I see a picture of that dang Bellona model again ... !

Since North Dakota and Oregon are practically neighbors, you need to hustle over there. Take your shovel, Mark, and a tape measure, and some hip waders too. We will be expecting reconstructed plans within a week. And don't forget the carvings ...

Thank you all for your answers.
I  have been also through the "Wind of Luck" gaming site, but I thought it would be something from an original source.
I'm not familiar with fake prints... and the handwritten notes on it, seemed real to me...
@.G. Delacroix. I have also visited your web site sir, I've seen the plans of that 48 cannon and I've read the information.
However, I'm not looking for plans but for anything could give me any clue for a riddle Ι'm dealing with...
In those info it is said that these guns were not used as naval ones beyond than 1783 but just only in costal and fortress defense batteries. (Book: French fortification 1715-1815).
But in my search, I have found that the artillery officer Paixhans, trying to prove his idea, that large caliber guns in small ships can make the difference, was experimenting with 48 cannons  in Antwerp in 1810.
I wonder why he was experimenting with those already  rejected guns. Were  the same guns, or could be something deferent.
Btw, was ever a 48-pounder carronade in French navy?
    Many thanks

uss frolick reacted to Torbogdan in A few pictures from the Vasa museum of ship models
Yesterday me and my daughter went to the Vasa museum, at her insistence! I have been there several times but still like to go there. This time I took a few pictures of ship models. The first to are of the 1:10 scale model. It is absolutely huge (of course it is, it in 1:10 scale...😀) It must have taken quite some time and skill to build it.

The second model is of the ship slowly sinking. If you happen to visit Stockholm the museum is well worth a visit. You can easily spend a few hours there.

Children under the age of 18 is free admission.

uss frolick reacted to druxey in Frigate Commander; non fiction, Napoleonic War period
Euryalus. Naiad. Brisk. Melampus. Familiar names such as these appear in the chronicle of one man's experience during the Napoleonic Wars. Based on Captain Graham Moore's (1764-1843) personal journals written on board, Tom Wareham has painted a compelling picture of the triumphs and frustrations of a rising Naval officer during a critical period of history. This page-turning story follows Moore from his time as Lieutenant on smuggling patrol to captain with seniority in a 74. His personal thoughts, including a fated love affair, are recorded, as well as various actions both great and small.

Only one unfortunate 'oopsie' that was overlooked in proofreading: page 117; substitute 'shrouds' for 'ratlines' and the sentence will make sense! Otherwise, a rattling good read.

Thoroughly recommend for anyone interested in this time period. Frigate Commander by Tom Wareham, published by Pen and Sword Books, U.K. in paperback.

    Bonjour,
Les « carlingots » sont deux pièces placées parallèlement et contre la quille afin de la renforcer latéralement.
Les "aiguillettes" sont la pièce supérieure dans la partie supérieure des cavaliers (qui sur ce navire ont une forme particulière).
