Stuntflyer got a reaction from Beef Wellington in 18th Century Longboat by Stuntflyer (Mike) - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1/48
First two friezes finished. Used Krylon Workable Fixatif 1306 to protect them and 3M Super 77 Spray Adhesive. If you happen to get some of the adhesive on the out side there is a great product called UnStik (see below) that will easily remove any excess without harming the frieze or the planking. I used it for many years when I was in the picture frame business. You can even use it on glossy photos.

My finished Longboat, a very rewarding and humbling experience.
A big thank you to everyone for all your support over the past eight months. You have kept me going when I was seriously in doubt. I know that this wonderful group of people here on MSW will help me to move forward and I look forward to sharing thoughts and ideas with other members in the future.
Now, if I could only decide on what to build next?

Having completed the rigging it's on to the oars, anchor and stand to complete the model.

I love your attention to detail and it shows in your work. At what point you finally say "good enough" is a choice only you can make. I think that your ability to "slow down" will result in a beautiful ship.

Movin right along, Rusty. Looks good to me! You could just tape it off and skip the freehand.

Today I finished up the bulwark details. All of the cleats and the pinrails have been added. I also made the catheads. These warrant special note. These were made in two pieces. They were shaped from a 3/16" x 3/16" strip. Care was taken to shape the inboard leg of the cathead to fit snug against the bulwarks. It had to be shaped to fit around the waterway and spirketting. The top portion had its two sheaves simulated in the usual manner.
The cap rail was then notched out to accept the cathead and the two sections of the catheads were fit together ahead of time. After the notched cap rail was ready...the two parts were tweaked until they fit well. Only then were they glued together and painted.
Hopefully sometime this week I will begin putting the gun carriages together or maybe make the belaying pins. I dont need that many belaying pins for this model so why not make them from scratch as well.

Well I've been successful in the past so I'm game to try again.
Getting tougher every year though.

Freehand? Thy hands are steadier than a rock, good sir. I salute you. :im Not Worthy: If it were me, everything but the wales would end up black.

Looking very good! Had the same problem only I'm glad you were able to catch and fix the over faired area early on. Those pesky stern gun ports tested my patience as well.

Over the past few days I managed to get the seats shaped and the channels installed.
The holes for the seats were drilled using 5/32" O.D brass tubing. After placing the tubing in a hand drill, a #11 blade was used to taper and sharpen the inside of the tubing to a sharp edge. The tubing was placed in a drill press for drilling. Both sides of the seats were drilled at the same time for uniformity. Making them and fitting them was time consuming and a bit fiddly, but worth the effort. The seats will be spray painted off the ship along with the other inboard stern details.
.
I'm going to notch the channels after double checking the angle of the chain plates in relationship to the hole markings in the wales. The eyebolts were formed from black 22ga. wire. To avoid having to use oversize holes in the channels the eyebolts were made by a simple shaping of the wire. A tiny notch was filed into the channel to allow the eyebolt to sink in a bit. Since the wire was not twisted, I used 3 hour Epoxy to glue them in.
