I was not happy with the carving of the first eagle, so I carved another one from Boxwood. I cut out the shape of the eagle first, then started the carving. I took Antony`s advice in putting a light stain on the carving to bring out the detail. I used French polish and linseed oil. Carving with the stain on. Eagle fitted to the stern of the ship. -
Very nice work Antony, very nice. Regards mij

Hi Antony. Thanks for your kind comments. I will try a light oak stain for the Eagle, but as you know yourself, if your not happy with what you have done, it should be re-placed. I`m sure you are far too modest about your carvings. Kind Regards mij -

Port and Starboard Dolphins fitted. Eagle fitted to stern. I`m not certain if the carving of the Eagle is good enough. I might take this one off, and re-carve another one. mij -

Place the strip in hot water for about 10 minutes, then take the strip out of the water and then place the strip over a hot plank bender and work the strip to shape as required. Use the water as frequently as required. The plank bender is made from a piece of Aluminium fitted to a soldering iron. mij

Hi Antony Yes, there will be some carving on her. They would be on the tip of the bowspit, the main rail to the poop rail, side of the poop deck and on the back of the stern. I`m not quite certain what tipe of carving I would do yet, but I`m open to all suggestions. Kind Regards mij -

Done a bit more to the Xebec. Cutting out the stern completed items cut out I don`t normally paint my models, but as these ships were colourful, I decided to give it a bit of colour. mij

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
