I am quite happy with the results.
Now I have to find a way to make the head of the boost used to attach the pintles....

mij reacted to SJSoane in micro table saw stop
Hi Michael, Here is Mk1 of the jig. I didn't get around to making the specialized clamp around the table yet, and used a regular clamp temporarily to see how it would work. It is great. The micro-adjuster allowed me to sneak up on a perfect measure, and it was very fast and efficient to cut, move the fence and wood, cut again. It is safer, and the saw cuts more cleanly, making those small cuts on the left side of the sawblade rather than tight up against the fence. The nylon screw is gentle on the edge of the wood, and acts as a featherboard of sorts for holding the wood against the fence.
My original drawing shows the clamp a little out of proportion to the actual table top. There is actually less overhang, and so less area for the clamp to grip. I am not sure how sturdy this original idea will be. I'll work on it another time...
Thanks again for the elegant idea of the rod rather than the sliding wood stop.

Hi Dan
The bandsaw is an old 3 wheel INCA, with a blade length of 104", which is capable of cutting 4" oak, for the milling I use a Proxxon DH 40 Planer Ticknesser (Ref: 27040).
The milling does take long time, but as you can see from the cherry, it was worth it.

Steel wool & vinegar is a very old staining technique, sometimes called "ebonizing." It works with the tannins in hardwoods. There is not enough tannin in any softwood to do a respectable job, but you can add tannin to the wood with tea. What I originally saw was vinegar with steel rusting in it applied to walnut without any tea. It immediately turned black with brown overtones.
What you need to do is make up some rusty vinegar, the rustier the better, a jar of tea and some scrap woods of different types. Experiment with and without tea and see what happens. If you look on the web for weathering wood, ebonizing wood, ageing wood, you will see many different techniques, any one of which may or may not give you the color you want. The only way is to experiment to find your own results. the only thing lost is a little scrap wood and less time than this thread has taken.

Then of course Dan, you could build something for yourself in between and not always on commission...
then you could enjoy the journey as well as the final result.
Mij, I too know the feeling of putting a lot of hours in the scrap bin...just to remake and be happy. You have our support anyway!

I`m using a piece of Cherry 49" x 12" x 2" for the frames, which has to be cut on a bandsaw, as I don`t own a large bench saw.
There will be about 40 lengths 2" x 7/16" then each piece will be milled down to the right thickness, which does take a long time.
But if you enjoy your hobby, does time matter.
I know what the wife thinks.

I`m not happy with the Tulip wood I`m using to build H.M.S Sussex, the Tulip is a bit soft and has no depth.
So I`ve put what I`ve done so far to one side and will start again using Cherry that has more depth.
It`s a 2 to 3 year project, and I believe you must be happy with what you are doing to get the best out of yourself.
