    Again, Welcome back John. Nice to see the progress. I have to check out one of those resistance soldering irons. I have the 'old fashioned' internal heat ceramic kind and it is fairly unwieldy for fine work.

    This is an overview of the deck to date. Note: the camboose is a little out of alignment - it is not attached yet and I didn't notice it when I took the photo.

    The Block and Tackle shop is, for now, closed. The guns are complete...at last...until I get to the spar deck when it will re-open again. I am glad to move on. Surely shrouds and ratlines can not be more tedious than these guns and the re-work to make them a bit more authentic (or, at least, as I eventually get to them I hope not as tedious). If they are PLEASE nobody tell me! Some final shots to date are below.

    BTW Andy that is a nice camber on the orlop deck (or is it berth?). The build looks like a lot of fun.

    Hi Andy: Let me add kudos as well for a job well done so far. In answer to above - would a laser line generator (the same kind as used to hang pictures, etc.) work to keep the stanchions in line and vertical. Once mounted stationary to the model make it just slightly off center and place the stanchion NEXT TO the vertical laser line. A piece of paper should make the line visible along the deck length at each stanchion station. - just a thought.

    Sjors, OSHA is the American governmental agency responsible for insuring safety in ALL work places. They have greatly improved employee safety. They enforce the safety regulations by applying stiff fines to offenders. The 'tongue in cheek' reference by Sam was kidding about the old days without the agency. I tease in the same way about the agency responsible for approving medications: I don't think they could even get aspirin approved today with the guidelines.

    I hope your trip home is a safe one John. I can't wait to see the shipyard back open. I know you are anxious to move forward with your build. Heck, in June I was just out of town for 10 days and found myself thinking, re-thinking, and anticipating getting some build work done. Hmmm...that might not sound to some like a vacation.

    I found the same use for them. That is exactly how I am forming the hook eye.

    Evan I entirely agree. The center stanchions would be away from the gun action. They certainly would work, in theory.

    Well Chuck I am up to hook # 118 (plus or minus a few lost ones) and my best time is about 2 minutes per hook. No where near the 1 per minute you mentioned when you get going with them. Your record remains without doubt undefeated. :)

    Yikes...I just realized I should have quantitated the time per gun given above. The 5 hours per gun is approximate. It includes: The revision of the gun carriages: 1. added ringbolts for the breaching on carriage sides 2. Added eyebolts for the gun tackle and train tackle 3. detail paint to the carriages for carriage hardware 4. capsquare addition Bulwark modifications: 1. ringbolt addition for breaching 2. eyebolt addition for gun tackle Breaching modifications: 1. lashed the breaching for each cannon 2. attached breaching to the ringbolts 3. clove hitch the knobs Gun tackle: 1. 2mm single and double block strop 2. formed hooks for the tackle 3. formed rope coils for the deck 4. secured a set to each gun Lastly it includes securing the guns to the deck after cupping the wheel contact points for better grip. OK. So there it is... about 5 hours per gun

    The ship currently has retractable stanchions. I am not sure of their history (i.e. whether they are a modern refit or not). They are hinged on top and swung up and well secured (you would not want to get knocked on the head with one of these) when clearing the deck for action.

    Thanks Augie. I think I could have given each of these 'babies' names due to the 'labor pains' (5 hours each - short for labor I suppose).

    I am now well over the half-way hump for the tackle rigging and for the fun of it decided to take a few deck levels pics of the gun deck. The phone camera is a bit blurry but some detail is visible nonetheless. The 'Gulliver' pose!

    Evan: I see you have moved the capstan aft slightly and built up the deck to compensate for the coaming. Great idea. I have been mulling this over in my mind about the close fit concerning this hatch just and how to handle it. I believe I will stop 'thinking' and adapt your solution. Thanks.

    I will get back to the lensing problem eventually Verne. The light is definitely bright enough so where there is will there is a way. Thanks for tackling this project. 2 (or more) minds are better than 1.

    Yes. The light leaking from the optic is called side firing. It is why I had to paint the optic flat black followed by the bulwark color to minimize it. The idea for the sconce sounds intriguing. Can't wait to see it.

    Gregg, welcome aboard. I am a little confused. This log is up to date and reflects my current status. I am in the middle of working the gun tackle for the rest of the 24 pounder cannons. I have 2 other active threads. One is describing the fiber optic lamps and the other is hooks and blocks creation. The links below will get you there. There are a couple of other threads that I have not posted to in a while and for all intent and purpose they are concluded. One is on painted model preservation of the paint and the other is about the 3 piece Revell decks.
