  1. Greetings Mark Looks like you should have no problems now. You are getting there. Excellent idea from Keith using marquetry sheet. Keep enjoying it. Regards DAVID
  2. Greetings Mark No worries, this only Mark 1. If it was me I would just buy some lollipop sticks and make a raft . Regards DAVID
  3. Greeting Mark. Things are looking good with your rigging. So a break to assemble the small ships. Are there only two ? I think there were four on the jotika Victory, but I only made two of them. I am still putting copper plates on the hull of Diana, but I have loads of money in my swear box for an holiday !! Covid permitting. Keep enjoying it . Regards DAVID
  4. Hello michael It’s looking good. Well done with that tricky job. A bit of advice, I would not fit any of the decoration, or do any work on the quarter galleries until much later on in your build. It is totally unnecessary and can easily get damaged. Have a look at Gil Middleton’s Log. Keep enjoying it. DAVID
  5. Hello Dave Yep once more those gunport linings !! I don’t know what Graham as advised you to do, but this is my best idea. If you fit ( let’s call it a shelf ) on the inside of the gunport aperture, level with the edge on both the top and bottom and both sides of the aperture, then you can simply locate the lining on the shelf and glue it in position 1mm back as required. I would use balsa wood for the shelf and let it sit back about 4mm. A reason for using balsa is if the shelf is slightly out of position after you glue it you can simply shave it level with a craft knife. Make a simple hook to help you locate the balsa shelf on the inside of the hull with glue on the front face of the shelf. Best of luck DAVID
  6. Greetings Mark It’s looking very good. Love the standing rigging, it brings the ship to life. Take your time and don’t forget the Davits !!! And any other sticky out bits like the bowsprit for example. Ok away you go again. DAVID
  7. Greeting all Thanks for all your likes. Well I have started coppering the hull again, using the alternative tiles I mentioned, which have taken a while to arrive. Anyway I have started fitting them from the waterline downward, which is the wrong way, I think. But as long as I am happy that’s all that matters. I have worked along the waterline until the curvature around the bow and stern starts to take affect. The next two rows of tiles take me around the bow and I will infill there first. OK that’s me for now, thanks a lot. DAVID. There are about 2100 Diana tiles here, which I will never use .
  8. Greetings Mark Well you have done a cracking job on those Davits !! Well done. Now the running rigging, the chances are the Davits will get damaged if you leave them on while doing the rigging as Keith as told you. Best take them off till last. Just keep enjoying it. Best regards. DAVID
  9. Greetings All David is no longer coppering !!! Not clever enough, so has abandoned it for now. I am painting canon barrels until I receive an order from CMB . My coppering has been a total shambles, and it was never going to get any better. So it was not worth continuing. I never liked the plates from the start, and realized I would have a problem with them. I have ordered 800 different plates from CMB to check them out. They are the wrong scale 1/72 but I am not bothered about that, so I will check to see if it’s worth using them. Regards DAVID
  10. greetings Peter Yep !! The fitting of the plates is tedious, I have just ripped a few off this morning. I started fitting the Victory tiles working down from the waterline, and you can see I had no problem at all with them by the photos. As I said earlier I am fitting these from the keel upward, which appears to be the way to go, but the quality of the work is very poor. I will carry on working upwards and hope it improves, but if I am not happy I will rip them off and start again from the waterline. Your work continues to be excellent as always, well done. Hello Keith good to hear from you, how are you keeping ? Don’t rush with the dark room there’s plenty of time. Best regards DAVID. ( photos Victory coppering, others Diana coppering so far. )
  11. Greeting all Thanks for the likes. Well once again I got cheesed off. Only made the gratings, ones inside the ship somewhere. One set of ladder fell in the bin. So I have abandoned the gun deck. I am now going to fit all the the copper plates before any thing else. There is a lot of quality work on this aspect of the build for me to follow and help me along. I have only once before copper plated a hull. I worked downward from the waterline, which appears to be incorrect, so I shall work upwards. Right here we go swear box and wallpaper paste to the ready. See you all when one side is complete. Regards DAVID
  12. Greetings Rich I am sending you 3 pictures of the foremast yards, there is beads on at least two of them DAVID. Read page 19 & 20 of rigging manual
  13. Greetings Rich Well done with the yards , excellent work. Am I correct? Do the parral beads and parral ribs only fit on the mizzenmast mast ? If so forget about them for now. Just keep enjoying it. Regards DAVID
  14. Greetings Mark Yep it’s looking good, are you making the coils for around the base of the masts and deck areas which we discussed earlier ? Just keep enjoying it. DAVID
  15. Greetings Mark Splendid work. They look really good. Do you have the small boats to assemble ? And when you go to war you will have to lift them up, because they will get destroyed by your cannons !! DAVID
  16. Greetings Peter I have just arrived back after a long while away from my build, but I honestly did not think you would have got this far on with yours. The quality of your build is honestly outstanding. I am only just finishing the second planking on mine, and off to the gun deck next as advised by Jason. Your photos of the deck will help me a lot with the work to be done on it. Yes excellent work Peter. Best advice just take your time and enjoy it. Regards DAVID.
  17. Greetings Mark Hope all is well. Well done, they look really good. Did you work out the length you needed yourself ? Telling you the road you know, fit them at the end of your build. Keep enjoying it. DAVID
  18. Greetings Hello Kevin how are you . One never knows what Kevin is building !! Last time I looked I thought you were standing holding an upright Coffin, I cannot recall which one of your fleet it was. Anyway it’s good to here from you. Hello Bill thanks a lot, I was having a quick look through a few build logs earlier today, and think one was yours. I will check it out later tonight. Best wishes DAVID
  19. Greetings all Well it is really good to be back, and thank you for all your comments, which are appreciated. I started to finish off the port side planking . An hours job ?? Alas NO !! I got carried away a bit and rushed it. Half of one length of 3 mm strip was not tight up to the one below it. As soon as you removed the half a dozen or so clamps it stood out a mile. So no more rushing things, I should know better. I will now leave that until last, then tidy up the gun ports. I asked for advice on what I should concentrate on next, thinking the Wales or the stern work. Jason advised me the best thing to do was to forget about any work around the hull or stern and concentrate on the deck were there is lots to do. And obviously it reduces any damage which may occur around the hull. So yep Jason the deck etc it is. Thanks a lot. So onward I go with the deck area. As you will see on the photos which are next I have started on the deck and made hundreds of guns, and that was pretty quick !!! OK my friend wanted to do them when I showed him them. I could not deter him from taking them. What do you mean !!! You don’t believe me.. I will sort them later. OK it’s the deck plan out next. Here are the photos of the hundreds of cannons I made.!!!! Regards DAVID
  20. Hello Bill I Well remember trying to think of which ship to buy. My Brother was building the Soleil Royal which was one I thought about buying. I went down to visit him in York and took one look at the kit and he’s progress, and that was to much for me. I mistakenly put the sovereign of the sea, and realized it later. I nearly bought the San Felipe but was not happy about all the metal fittings which turned me away from it. I think I made the correct choice and happy to get back to this build. What are you building ? Best regards DAVID
  21. Greetings all After a year or so I have restarted my build of the Diana, and have finished all the second planking apart from an hour or so on the port side and tidying of the gun ports. So what to do next chaps what do you reckon ? I was thinking the Wales or work on the stern area. I do have a question about the Wale. How wide is the Wale 18 mm or 21 mm, 6 or 7 planks? The drawing measures 18mm but asks for 21mm which I think it would then meet the water line. Well there you go !! Here’s a few photos. DAVID
  22. Greetings all I have just returned to my build of the Diana after about a year. I am rea
  23. Hello Mark All is looking good. I have been looking around a few old logs and came across Jerry’s from a few year ago. Can you remember when you we’re asking him about your davits and how to position them, and I had an idea how it might work. Did you ever manage to check it out. My Diana’s planking will be on show soon!!! Keep up the good work. Regards DAVID.
  24. Greetings from long ago. Hope you are keeping well. Just had a quick look through your log. Your build is very impressive. I will have a proper look at it later. I have just started back on the Diana after leaving it for a year or two. it should have been finished by now, and I have only just finished the second planking today. So it’s a good sand now, and then I will be happy. Anyway it’s good to see you again, and I shall follow your progress. Yes your build is looking really good Best wishes. DAVID
  25. Hello again Mark My favourite part of the build.... A little bit of advice before you get to far into your rigging. Get plenty of rope coils around the masts and around the deck area, plus areas that you may be belaying to, so they look like the end of the belayed rigging. Yep !!! Your running rigging does get snapped a lot trust me. The only good thing about that is you can afford a good holiday out of your swear box. Anyway plod on, all is good. I have nearly finished planking. Regards DAVID
