Sjors i had a check this morning and the deck is sittign better now . there is still a slight difference so i might have to do some sanding there which probably means i have to rip off some of the planking

I know you like deck planking but have you rip of a few planks to do it again?

well Sjors looks like I don't need to do it

 

after checking tonight I found that the problem wasn't where the deck parts join but the bulkhead before that.

 

with some effort I ripped of the whole part sanded off the glue and after a bit of fitting its now sitting better

used my smaller clamps and the little notch in the bulkheads to keep the deck securely down

 

meanwhile I did finish planking the forward deck

I've gotta ask - what in the heck is that weight you are using?  Looks like a massive battery pack from something! 

 

Nice recovery yet again, BTW!  really great to see this one get off the ground (so to speak).

Thanks Mick . i checked again this morning and the flow of the deck is now without lumps. a bit of smoothing out because of the ripping out off the deck and it should be fine. i have to have a closer look but i think the deck plankign has come out well and might only need a bit of sanding

only had a bit of time today and that was spend fixing up th elast bit of the deck witch was not completly centered.

 

i am at work now (all alone ) but hopefully i can do some more planking tomorrow

Success is all in the preparation mate and your doing that in spadefulls, if you take as much care on the rest of the build as this then she is going to be a real stunner.

 

Shame about that four letter word thingy ( work ), forgotten what that's like now.

slowly planking the deck

 

I assembled the little structure . the curved part will needs lots of filling to get it all smooth before it can be painted

 

also need to get a list of paint colors I need. I am hoping the 2 bottles of admiralty white will do the whole build

I am using the Admiralty white Adriaan and it goes a fair way

What I did when the container was getting low and a bit thicker was add a few drops of water and shake for ages   

 

Planking is coming on nicely

What glue do you use????

Also what is that funny little thing ??

thanks Mick . 2 bottles shoudl do a lot but she is a big ship and most of the parts above the waterline need to be painted white. i am thinking of buying some other similar white and use that for the first few layers so i cna finish off with the admiralty paint

 

not sure what its called (spanish translation comes out as hatch) but its the structure thta sits on the aft deck

I finished planking the middle deck. relaxing not using brain just going with the flow :

 

check plank to see if shape is even, check length, use pencil on side, use toothpick to apply glue, fit plank on deck, use metal ruler and clamps to hold plank down and then on to the next

 

thought I was racing along but when I checked time I had worked for over 3 1/2 hours (around 2 minutes per plank)

 

 

just one more deck to go now (the one you see in the background)

middle deck is finished and I did some sanding on it. not really happy about some parts. deciding if I should fix it up or not

 

the 2 structures will have lots of doors windows and hand railings attached later on but I marked them now so it will be easier . especially drilling the holes for the eyebolts to hold the hand railings

 

 

the windows and doors are supposed to be glued on top . somehow it doesn't look good to me. going to have a peek at some pictures to see how they look in real

looking super!  extra detail would really spice her up!     here's something you can try for the doors.........cut them out and fit in a piece of thinner wood.   make the indention appear on the exterior of the wall.....dress as desired

after looking at the few pictures i realise how much differences there are with the real ship  (although its difficult to know which pictures are off the 1958 version and which of the 1933 version). i most likely are going to do what Popeye suggested . the windows (no such windows on the real ship) will only stick out a bit. the doors about half . i ll try it on a piece of scrapwood first to see how it looks

 

as i said i am not going to do much modification on this build (the stairs are just flat pieces off brass strips which proabbly will look horible so i ll have to figure out something for those)

 

I see this as a fun build to experiment with planking without having to worry too much if i have it wrong( its double planked and then painted)

with thiat experience under my belt i can tackle the endeavours planking (and have loads of pictures from when i visit her)

I wondered how long the not looking at pictures and making her look like the Box would last, LOL. Thats OK though, personally I find I need inspiration in just about everything I do, but not always necessarily from the actual 1:1 ship. Its always amazing where ideas come from and how they can be adapted on very different builds. Also there will always be need in kits to fix areas on which the kit falls short. Kinda like that deck mounting situation, it needed fixing. Its hard to believe that deck just ended with no support. Nice fix.

 

I'm looking forward to seeing this one go together. She a unique vessel and should be an interesting journey.

Nice going Adriaan!  With your experience with stairs, doors and windows on the Mississippi Queen this should be a piece of cake for you.  Do some bashing to make it look better then the kit gives you.  You have to look at the finished ship for a long time and you should be happy with looking at a good build.

I really can't say anything,  because my imagination always gets the best of me........yea,  if the plywood's 3/16........go 1/8 on the door fillers......the indention will give it a nice touch.   if you really want to get crazy.......do the windows too.....5mm piece for the sills.   I know your still on the mend....and you said you didn't want to do too much bash work.   I am just so pleased to see you back in the shop,  my imagination is working over time for ya!    I got your back,  man!!!! :D
