what I mean is,  you have to spray a seal coat on them.   with ink jet decals,  this is very important....the ink is on the surface of the decal film.  if you were to put water on them,  the ink would come off.   Testors has a decal program you can purchase

they also carry decal bonder to spray on after the decals are printed.   there are two drawbacks though.......printers cannot print white and there is a bit of a transparency issue......I haven't worked it out yet...still experimenting.   I've made decals for all my boats

Hello Captain, I hope all is well in one of my favorite parts of the world...I love The Netherlands. Been there a number of times... I sleep wierd hours, since I am now faced with working on these damn floating things we all are trying to replicate. I tried to banish them for a couple of years, and they still manage to creep back into life again...doomed I suppose. Yes, it is now 12:30am here in sunny Texas, and is currently around 60 degrees F., Tomorrow should be in the 80F..range, so Spring is here. Been building a lot over the last few days, and should finish the Main mast on my Constitution tomorrow....I have provided you pictures if you haven't looked.....Sir.....lol....I do realize how it is important to show progresss to my superiors.... I shall now retire for the evening, since my watch os over...By the way, thank you for your interest......

Maybe I think it's because i'll never be outside of Europe.

Now I wanta see Daniel do decals for his ships, as if the ships weren't enough. I can see it now a decal 10 pixels by 50 pixels. You'd need a microscope to see it. BTW Daniel I have another bowl of ship planking fresh off the plane.

Decals seem to be a challenge of their own.  If you succeed Dan you'll have to share...who knows it could be a new business providing the club members with "ready made" miniature decals......

Well, with the Conny getting close to completion, I need to start planning on working on my Morgan.  I have noticed that when it comes to planking there are numerous types of clamps, clips, and devices for attaching the planking to the bulkheads.  Since this will be my first wooden ship I welcome anyone's thoughts on this as to recommendations.  I will need to order them shortly so as not to have any downtime between builds....might loose my initiative...lol......I've heard that several of these are not worth the box they were shipped in, so I would appreciate any feedback you guys might have.....

I use pins that I add small sections of dowels to (see my Ratt log) I paint them with a sharpie, the color depending on the length of pin sticking out. I also coat them with thin CA  to prevent the PVA glue from sticking to them. I will put small scraps of planking between my work and the pins. These come free with your kit.

 

Larger dowels are drilled off center creating a concentric wheel to turn and apply pressure. I find sideways pressure is better then downward to secure planks. It reduces seams.

 

I also have two sizes of small cloth pins that I customize

I use titebond. Not the waterproof either. Makes repairs easier and if my ship is a floating it is the least of my problems. I'm on the third floor 'lol"

I have Sig Bond, which I got from Hobbly Lobby. I used it when I built the Model Airways Sopwith Camel. Is Titebond found at Home Depot or a Hobby Lobby?

I think as long as it is "not waterproof" wood glue you will be fine. There are builds here where they use Emler's white glue

 

I do not use very much CA. As a matter of fact, I don't think there is any on the Ratt. On the runabout, I had to use it to tack some planks in the bow. Some guys swear by it however and some instructions recommend it (the runabout being one)

Ok, I have a Home Depot near where I live. I'll pick up some next time I'm down there. I use CA on the plastic, and I used it with the Sopwith Camel, since it had a lot of Brittania parts that had to adhere to wood with strength. I love where I've needed it, except it is bad on the fingers when the get stuck together....ouch, it likes skin...

First up, I'd recommend sticking to PVA glue (sorry about the pun!) for your wood models and only use CA when you really, really have to. As for clamps, JP has already given some good advice. You can also use "mapping" pins (the type with a small shoulder on them). You can also buy things called " planking clamps". These are sold on line by Modellers Shipyard (Australian company), and I think Model Expo might carry some too. If you want to see these in action, have a look through Danny Vadas's Vulture build log. Of course, you can make your own variety of clamps - again, Danny's log is an excellent resource to see some of these.

I also like the small metal spring clamp. The important part is your clamping in 2 directions. into the bulkhead and into the butt-jointing plank. and the butt is more difficult to clamp typically. Personally I haven't used pins, yet.

Yea I understand,

Ive postponed many a task to spend extra time thinking it over. The great thing about MSW is that there's always someone around to bounce ideas off of.

I looked forward to planking but also feared it a bit, but found the key is patience. Pace yourself and let the plank guide you. Learning to shape the planks soon becomes second nature and for me quite relaxing and enjoyable. I don't see it as 2 hours making a twisted stick, I see it as manipulating wood to do my bidding and when done achieving a complete model of a plank. Each piece is a model and deserves its own time.

A fine beverage and some tunes complete the enjoyment... and it is always acceptable to take a break to think or just let your mind wander.

One of the wonderful things I've found in transitioning from plastic to wood is the infinite beauty and character of wood. I love the way it can be wet and shaped. The internal structure and characteristics of differing woods is a fun learning curve. Just like every builder has their own mind, so does each type and also each piece of wood. 

 

In our polymer would of plastic, so many have forgotten the beauty and malleability of wood. Modeling has reconnected me with that.

yes, Keith I agree with you.  I learned that same feeling especially after completing my Model Airways Sopwith Camel.  That was like building a ship too, many parts pieces, and lots of little wood sticks and rigging.  Thoroughly enjoyable, and a real conversation piece...
