Chesapeake Bay Crabbing Skiff by Duanelaker - FINISHED - Midwest Products - Small

Don't stop your build because of this, a little sanding, and try again.

What paint were you using for the red?

You probably needed a finer tape (like Tamiya) for the explicit line, then the blue tape for the bulk of the masking.

The blue painte3r's tape is meant for paint with much coarser pigments than used with modeling paint.

For where it has run over, there are a couple of approaches.  One is to mask the red (I'd try a clear packing tape not stuck down over-hard, and not burnished) then sand the red away with well-used medium grit sandpaper (note the idea there would be to only barely remove material--a slow process).

The other way would be to go get a pint of Kilz or Benjamin Moore Binz primer, mask the red with a sharp thin tape (like Tamiya), then brush paint the primer over.  Note that both of those primers will not look like they are covering up the paint, but they actually do.

Note that the lacquer-based paints cover better, but are less nice to be around; they are also much harder to find at the home improvment store than the water-clean up version, which might want two coats.   I have ued all four of those products as a professional painter--lacquer Kills can cover black, purple, maroon and the like in one coat, and allow a single coat of white over top--good stuff, if better suited for airless sprayers or HPLV sprayers than the average airbrush; water clean-up Binz will run through an airbursh if set very coarse, but will want two coats, well dried in-between.

That's my 2¢, spend it well

I have it back in gray primer...sanded it down and startIng over.

i use Vallejo paint and used hull red and red to make the color, one of them was specific to air brushing the hull red was not...I think I thinned it to much and then when it came out poor I didn’t stop.  I’m new to air brushing but I have purchased a badger patriot 105 and have liked it much better then the 20$ air brush that came with my compressor 😝.  I have far too many kits already purchased to give up now...it’s rather embarrassing.  If I finished two kits per year I’d be done with them just as I retire in 15 years Perhaps I’ll try my luck on scratch building.

anyways...I’m debating doing the white/black/red color scheme of the boat...any advice as to which I spray first and last and how best to mask off everything?  I’m going to purchase Tamiya tape and see how that works.  I’m still working on the patience end of things.

also curious how one finds out if there are any local wooden ship model clubs?

I contemplate getting an airbrush; for the moment I do alright with brushes but someday I may decide to take the plunge. What compressor did you get and do you like it?

I’m certain you’ll get it this time around, take your time.

I’ll be honest and tell you I got a cheap one online umm master airbrush I believe?  The Vallejo Air paint is nice and works pretty good unmixed right in the badger patriot.  It is easy to disassemble and clean which was my biggest concern.  I did plastic cars as a teen and was happy with the results a spray can of testors got me, however now I wish I had gotten an airbrush a long time ago.

my biggest fault is wanting instant results...I currently have 4 builds going on and I will say I won’t make that mistake again, or maybe I will8748D476-AC9A-49DE-B51E-ACA7B45E412F.thumb.jpeg.8f7b7ccb2edf029ddaa5f25ebf39a11d.jpeg

  • 2 weeks later...

Well I tried a little more paint and stripe...I am wanting to move on with this project and although I believe in the future I will be able to create a better stripe (had better luck with the tape but need to gain more patience).  I have to get better at applying less paint more frequently.   Also, I’m not sure hull red was the right red as it was much darker than I thought.C3A71F1C-3F0E-4234-832D-67B9ECCDB9A7.thumb.jpeg.cbf145a5625ca77a94a3cd6d2530a28e.jpegAE8544D6-4BA1-4BBE-8E39-C084200B7142.thumb.jpeg.cb3f2e593b8a714abaf78e25d4b8c396.jpeg2809DEBF-E6D4-4ACA-914A-E630ECEB676D.thumb.jpeg.9b4bd3459664ed8947ca37e20e62cdee.jpeg

It definitely looks better. When painting in small scales, paints tend to look darker. Its sometimes necessary to lighten the paint  a little.

Slowly but surely...I like these wood cleats I purchased from model ship ways, much nicer than the plastic ones that came on the kit42D83A53-DAF4-48FE-9231-F69675700B62.thumb.jpeg.d8c25713e7e4d0f42dac6a1f93cdefb5.jpegD6F8EA7A-0A52-4F84-8B71-E85CA1478FA2.thumb.jpeg.1379a8f3545ad864877cb33e97646aa7.jpeg39F8CAD5-9C9B-4A49-9D13-2B7A7FC02DDD.thumb.jpeg.83a544216013332aee7a73a2f7ee0aca.jpeg1600C059-764F-4F70-8C92-C3BD08EDC181.thumb.jpeg.f4c9f4ee60c02cde844dce1aa4df1c1f.jpeg

Painted the pintles and gudgeons, also added the mahogany strips on the side..this boat is looking nice! I am quite pleased...hopefully the sails end up satisfactory.

So I have gotten the sails on...tying cleats is not easy.   Should be wrapping this one up pretty soon.11E40E36-F729-4770-99E0-659073F38670.thumb.jpeg.db037476ef1bcc0aa537548b85fb9c92.jpeg05D582E3-1E33-4A46-82EC-ED2E8A1CD467.thumb.jpeg.447bc063adffae050195bc864c1fa79e.jpegF0FEDBEC-05D6-49E3-ABC7-96B5DF2A8B6D.thumb.jpeg.575abaac315a85ed229f27283972626f.jpeg7FE8CA73-6659-4BFA-AFFB-5AAE4DA85CAF.thumb.jpeg.a70b3ebbbd73eaad6f384b193971a7a0.jpeg13187FED-A107-4B67-AC9F-D30BFC72F652.thumb.jpeg.019e790623171a6ac07af7ea7c25cc01.jpeg

Out of curiosity, what causes you issues with the cleats?

On my first build I definitely didn’t tie them right, and it made it look sloppy.  So this time I wanted to make sure I did it proper, but also didn’t want to glue them as the instructions imply (is this a silly notion, should I just glue it once tied, or can I tie them correctly so they do not come loose?). I ended up snapping off one and that irritated me.  I found it difficult to finish with the back under loop and pull tight at the end.

I don’t properly tie them off either (yet, I’m hoping to do a better job with using the proper knots on the next build). Right now I simply do a few figure 8s and then glue it. Personally, I glue all my knots because the last thing I want is a knot to come loose later and be frustrated trying to tie it back on with a short rope.

I am going to declare this build complete.  I added a little glue to the cleats and I am over all very happy with the way this turned out.  Also added a scratch built net and basket!7B0314B8-CF03-4860-B8B9-EF6F601A0A87.thumb.jpeg.f56877254cb4de0adf649a610844a5da.jpeg4019A457-107D-4893-9B72-96012B66CE12.thumb.jpeg.0645fc5ba728ffb8088f9aae4022bfeb.jpegAFC351C9-1DCA-4E95-8702-A74EAA9439C7.thumb.jpeg.c5f96cf7e153e992ac3e6f5cf1c8933a.jpeg9F6C11B5-A195-4F26-A0A4-9A6D7BAB9B35.thumb.jpeg.705d2b643ad9d11ffe9cd5e236558e24.jpeg443B4C2B-6684-449B-B249-B440EC27AD9C.thumb.jpeg.ff9d6cb238d9f7233b1ae408eb852c02.jpegA3998706-9A4D-4428-BEB5-64AEAA48FCB4.thumb.jpeg.da2fe3210a4a0aef459c30511d66f92d.jpeg450EEA90-A0CE-48E4-8411-AD62D42E1ACE.thumb.jpeg.c0b2881cb7272a0e439d391d975e0763.jpeg

Thanks for looking in!  This is my second finished wood model and I am certainly obsessed to say the least, a week doesn’t go by without me buying something lol.  Thanks for the compliment, it means a lot coming from this forum.

Ha! I almost did the same thing. I enjoyed the Flattie and am having a lot fun with the Sharpie (almost finished). They are fun kits and have room for adding accessories and little details if you want.

Go to the link below to see the clubs that might be near you.  Not every club is listed

Note to others reading this:  If your clubs isn't listed send your info to the NRG so it can be put up onto the lists - also check if it's accurate - things might have changed since the info was put up there.

sadly I am located in the center of NY state and there are no apparent clubs to be found within a few hundred miles.   Thank you for the link and response!

Also curious if anyone would suspect this boat would also have oars and oarlocks?  I imagine there were times they needed to paddle?

After getting stuck in the Chesapeake Bay on a sunfish (and attempting to paddle with the centerboard) with my father he always kept a paddle on board as a safety measure. I don’t see any oarlocks on pictures of current crabbing skiffs though.

While looking through build logs for a different reason I ran across this one that may be useful to you:

This build log of a crabbing skiff references a book which may help regarding the oar lock question and oarlocks are included in their build.
