HMS Bounty by SweepHall - Artesania Latina - 1:48

Recommended Posts

Hi all

First build log but second build having just finished building the HMS Revenge by Ocre.  Was a fairly basic model but I feel I learnt quite a lot doing it.

20200719_214439.thumb.jpg.e8e3f738c97bdac23f59be843119113b.jpg

Have purchased the AL Bounty kit after seeing a few of the build logs on here and quite liked the idea of the open side and the amount of detail you could put in it.  It was a toss up between the Bounty and Caldercraft's Mary Rose but, in the end, the Bounty won.

I'm going to be making quite a few additions to the interior as had been done in other logs as I feel it adds more to the model.  I'm also going to have a go at adding some internal lighting to the ship as what's the point of the interior detail if you can't see it? I'm also planning on putting a bit of paint on the exterior to brighten it up a bit (just a little blue and yellow)

After opening the box, spending a few hours reading the instructions and typing the part list up onto a spreadsheet to make identification and searching easier, I noticed that there's a number of pieces missing: 8mm brass rings, 0.6x6 basswood, 1x8 basswood and cloth for the bales plus there not being enough 0.6 x 3 basswod, 1 x 10 basswood, 1 x basswood, 3 x 5 basswod and ø6 dowells.  As I was ordering more material to make additional cabins and features, I just re-ordered what was missing.

20200720_181058.thumb.jpg.df65ef92d1d435ed01466610a6b179c3.jpg

I purchased the Billings boats slip to use for the bounty but have found it's no good for this model as the frames go right down to the bottom of the false keel.  I've made my own version using a shelf, some angle brackets and some blocks of wood.  Hopefully it gets the frames in a perfect position.

One thing I could do with advice on is what is single planking and double planking?  The bounty model is single planked but the Revenge model I made had 1 layer of basswood/lime planks and then you covered it with 0.6mm strips over the top.  I really liked the finish this gave the model in the end and would like to do the same thing for the bounty (plus it hides the pin heads).  Is this what is referred to as double planking and would anyone advise against it on the AL Bounty?

Edit - have learnt this is called a veneer.  No idea if it's the "done thing thing" or not, but I'm going to do it anyway.

The Revenge took me a month and half to complete but I'm planning on spending a lot more time (I know it's going to take months/year(s)) on the Bounty to get it "perfect".

I've made a start cutting the pieces out of the kit and have started the sanding/staining/varnish process as I like the walnut finish on the frames and false keel.  Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Will keep you all updated and thanks for reading!

Have stained the framed and the false keel with satin walnut varnish.  I quite like the finish with just the two coats.  Also finished my jig which has helped straighten out the false keel a little as it was slightly warped.

Now to finish off the varnishing of all the smaller frames pieces

So an update of work over the weekend.

Finished the staining/varnishing of everything to do with the frame of the ship.  Checked the levels whilst installing all the frames and everything appears to be level and at the correct distances (some of the frames had to be persuaded to stay level).

So now onto the hold decks.

I'd seen on another page about using cotton thread as the caulking between the planks so I thought I'd give it a go.

20200727_125459.thumb.jpg.a10bc01761102c56390ba71dcec3407b.jpg

I stained and varnished underneath the decks before doing any work on the top of them.  Very little of the hold deck will be visible from underneath but the lower deck and the main deck will be.

20200727_125005.thumb.jpg.058a4ce3a66ffcaae4dc7133f72d1610.jpg

It wasn't overly difficult putting the cotton in, but I found it got easier if it was coated in some watered down PVA first.  I think I did a better job on the ones I did later as I got into the swing of it by then but I'm pleased with the result overall.

20200727_124922.thumb.jpg.54e56eef13e6c7f27b18c840f6283b46.jpg

And I finished the decks using a bit of light oak varnish and using a pencil to simulate the nail heads.  I did have a go at drilling holes and using a bit of wood filler but I couldn't get it to work on the small holes and I think the pencil looks good enough.

20200727_124755.thumb.jpg.c2bda6a90257449b4f52f5f10cdac085.jpg

Installed onto the ship.  Some very minor filing on the groves so they sat on the frames nicely but everything is still level and in the correct place.

20200727_125130.thumb.jpg.eeab36da83c19a5cc84a10acadc013aa.jpg20200727_125149.thumb.jpg.a13ac91bb5f9b08f3f412cede7414ea8.jpg

And I also added a veneer on the edges of the deck to hide the plywood edge.  Am not going to bother veneering the other side as 1 - it's not open and 2 - you won't be able to see it because of the cabins.

And now onto the planning and measuring up for the custom cabins on the hold deck.

I just started this kit too but am headed out on vacation until late August... will be watching your build as I plan to do a lot of kit bashing too.

Looking good!

I bought the Hobby Zone building slip and as you can see below, I think it will work quite well... some dry fitting in the works.

See you in September!

I tried to get hold of the Hobby Zone slip but it seems impossible to get hold of in the UK.  Might try and get it again for a future build but my shelf and angle brackets seem to be doing the trick so far.

So, another update.

After finishing the hold deck, it was time to make the fore mast hole and mizzen mast hole.  The instructions say to round them a bit (which I did), but I thought they looked a little plain like that.20200729_215343.thumb.jpg.a241bcd39f5605c5773854d307b59419.jpg

20200729_215321.thumb.jpg.9cb97cc7ebf3012dee8b209c6b8b03a9.jpg

So I just put some grooves on the edge and stained it walnut.  The spacing isn't quite perfect but it's a decent first effort.20200727_124717.thumb.jpg.178e962dcf5abf63bef7b8adadb910ef.jpg

20200729_215107.thumb.jpg.2d9580f29f59df3ac454d1c626bbca54.jpg

With the cabin additions, I wanted to use plywood as a base but I couldn't get hold of the size I wanted.  In the end I used 1.5mm lime which is very flexible but easy to work with and cut/shape.  Below is what I've managed so far.

20200729_215255.thumb.jpg.5e6cef99b625b700eea81c4cddd99970.jpg

20200729_215227.thumb.jpg.3dc1db6f626ef798569a37af63ba94e6.jpg

As I want one of the cabin doors to be open, I made them separate to the walls.  For the closed doors I used 3 strips of 5mm, then cut down to 12.5mm and put a frame on them using 0.5mm wood.  For the open door I used 3 strips of 0.5mm wood and then framed them either side.

I used 2mm black rings for the handles rather than the standard 3.5mm brass ones included in the kit.  Will be installing these this evening but everything fits on a dry run.

I've finished the first lot of cabins. Made two mistakes.  One, I forgot about the edge of the wall running parallel to the hold well should have been planked.  Fortunately it will be covered by the hold well, so I've gotten away with it this time.  Secondly, the wall on the cabin with the open door is too flat and should follow the curvature of the ship.  I could take it out and try again, but seeing as so little is going to be visible, it seems a little pointless.

I could do with advice as to what would be in the cabin with the open door.  Would it have been a bed or a hammock and would there have been any other furniture in there?

  • 2 weeks later...

Over a week has gone since I last updated this.  Been busy at work and needed to get back out on the golf course.

Anyway, I've finished the cabins on the hold deck and the hold well.  Also had a little play with the lathe to see what it could do.  Made a couple of chock pillars to test it out before I settled on the one  in the pictures.

20200809_195155.thumb.jpg.7c11f4a873606db6a07fc90155ca5292.jpg20200809_200654.thumb.jpg.a03604ca93aa0f73d31bfedaf90e776a.jpg

Made a couple if mistakes with the hold well but managed to rectify them easily enough.  Not entirely happy with the way the second lot of cabins turned out compared to the first, but they'll do.  Have ordered some 1.5mm ply for the cabins on the lower deck as the lime wood is a pain to use and cut accurately.

20200809_165828.thumb.jpg.b1649b16af0640163b02a9bbda1ac3a4.jpg20200809_211324.thumb.jpg.817aab56713dc52daddcfd12c3983ce9.jpg

I've prepared the support beams for the lanterns and am waiting on some plastic tubing to be able make a start on them (I know it looks awful but it was my first time milling anything and it won't be visible anyway).  Not much else I can do on this deck now until the lanterns are installed.

Will make a start on the stairs and furniture for the two open cabins this week.

Lanterns completed for now (need to increase the length of the wire, move the capacitor (I think that's what it is) and get the soldering iron out.  This deck is nearly finished and then I can move onto the next one.

Haven't completely decided how I'm going to hide the wires from the upper decks and am open to suggestions.   They're small enough so should be barely noticeable if you run them down the side of the frames.

This is really slow going... seems like no progress is being made!

In fact this looks very good and there's definite progress here.

I find that unfortunately once you've made something it takes very little time for it to become the "new normal", so the amount of progress you've actually made tends to get overlooked. Sometimes it's good to go back over your build log and see just how much has been achieved - it can be very worthwhile and good for morale.

It's probably just that I see other build logs with the frames going up and then, BAM, they're straight onto the planking.   Need to keep it in perspective that there's a lot of detail going into this Bounty.

Installed two of the lanterns this evening.   It's slow going making sure they don't break and increasing the length of the wire.  Fortunately it seems I've remembered how to solder from back in school.

The great thing about this light is that you can't see any of the glaring mistakes you see in normal light!

You're pretty close - the best word to use for profondeur would be depth. Unfortunately Engliush is not a very logical language.

And I certainly agree with your comment.

Nearly getting to the end if this deck now.  Have finished installing the lanterns and tidied up the wires so very little will be visible once the model is finished.

I had to make some walls under the deck to hide the wires.  Not true to the real Bounty but then very little if this part of the kit is!20200817_210432.thumb.jpg.f31b30008f021f329b00d0f7913faaa3.jpg20200817_210429.thumb.jpg.12e9099199151137da17e3e935c3372c.jpg20200817_211233.thumb.jpg.a350468a5b72b9d7f46ff433a3b7eeb8.jpg20200817_210220.thumb.jpg.a43850d8de7bae62481f0bf5ad0822c2.jpg

and then I started on something that is actually part of the kit: the stairs.

39 20mm steps to cut out and shape. My new saw made light work of it although I'm now thinking of getting a mill as it would have made shaping them a lot easier.

I made a slight mess cutting the groves to enable to bottom stairs to sit right.  None of it will be seen but it's frustrating none the less.

20200817_201412.thumb.jpg.90b50015d89b2b254eb74e1ceadf42d0.jpg

All that's left to do is close the gaps on the support beams, install the first lot of stairs, decide what to do about railings and make some sort of anchor rack.  Might get this deck done by October!

Oh, and cabin furniture too.

An update on my Bounty build:

I've made balustrades (is that what they're called?) for the stairs.  Fairly simple but they do the job.

Started the planking on the next deck.  What worked so well on the first decks (contact glue and cotton) was terrible on this deck.  The glue wouldn't stick, the cotton kept fraying and I got the pattern on the decks completely wrong.  I ended up having to re-do a lot of the thread and used copious amounts of CA.  Some of the planks are a little lumpy but the end result is ok but it was nightmare to do.

I've made balustrades (is that what they're called?) for the stairs.

A single one is a baluster. A unit with railing and balusters is called a balustrade. (Just something I've picked up working in building design).

That looks really good, Sweephall. Nice to see the internal details, too.

Wow!

You've made some great progress! Love the lighting... something I had planned to do too. I'll be examining your work closely as I like they way it turned out.

I finally got started on my kit... staining frames and the keel... funny thing, I numbered my frames but the stain washed the numbers off! Not a big deal but I had a good laugh!

Looking forward to your next updates.
