Welcome to Model Ship World.  You have come to the right forum to learn how to enhance your skills in building your first wooden ship model.  It sounds like you have picked the right kit to start off with.  There are videos on YouTube that OcCre has produced on how to build this model.  Here is the link :

I hope you start a build log of your Polaris as we would like to follow your progress.

Welcome to MSW.   I just checked and there is a log on-going for Polaris.   He's not very far into though as he just started it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Modeled a very long time ago and loved it but mostly plastic and only basic wood.  I’ve recently became a grandpa and I’ve finally decide to start my own hobby since I’ve spent years supporting everyone else.  I’m going to order the Mantua Sergal Thermopylae Model # Art791 from Mantua and am looking forward to the challenge.  Any tips on tools or other are greatly appreciated.  I expect this to be very slow and I’m not afraid to make mistakes.  I’m looking forward to the challenge

Welcome to MSW, Devildog 36.   I'm guessing you're a former Marine from your screenname.

I suggest you open a topic here in this sub forum and introduce yourself.   There are some Thermoplyae builds in the kit area.  Have a look at them, start your own log as it's a great way to get help and meet folks.

For tools, have a look here:  https://thenrg.org/resource/articles    Scroll down the page a bit and you'll find some articles on tools.. both good and bad.
