Once all the yards are finished for this mast…..I will then rig the shrouds.  Mixin it up from my GR method…….keeping the Monotony at bay.

Rob, I never tire of seeing the beautiful detailed progress of your build, no matter what the pace.

Spent some time finishing up the upper topsail.  When I mount the yards I will run the sheets and downhauls.
Still need to add the bunt blocks.

Rob,  it looks very very good, far better now, i really  like tiny ridges along that really makes your brain think that its sail furled. enjoy the monotony tour   :)

It takes an overall view to really see the effect.  We tend to see sails furled loosely....with puffs of sail hanging symmetrical along the yard....but rarely do we see sails tightly bundled across the top of the yard.  An entire sail, pulled up and bunched and rolled and attempted to be smooth over a jackstay laden yard.  Creating ridges and folds to increase the effect can be daunting.  Finished off with some slight weathering and stain/chafing details.  It looks fuller once the beckets were installed and I added the sheet support rollers/eyes under the yard(Not shown in pics).

Rob, as you described the careful consideration you're giving all the painstaking weathering details of just a single tightly furled sail, it's occured to me that you're transitioning from mere model making to an artisan. You may not recognize it yourself but trust me, I see it and I have no doubt that others would do so too.

Thanks Rich.  Personally, I have never replicated a tightly furled sail before, but after great experimentation and comparison.....realistic weathered furled sails  are extremely problematic...because the sail control blocks and furling beckets need to be correctly replicated while still presenting a good scale sail.

I wanted to go in a direction that was unexpected...considering the subject vessel.

Nothing is perfect...especially in the real world and replicating this imperfection is my aim...I just don't want a bulky cloth sail, but sails that can lend to the realism and not be a distraction but a compliment.

I've probably put more time and attention into this part of the build as I have into any other single aspect and I pray when completed, commutatively they will make this model *POP*.    Glory of the Seas deserves my full creative resources.

Again...thanks for your fine compliments.

Rob, Wow!.... until now I didn't know that your vast modeling skills included levitation!! How else do explain not one, or two but three beautifully crafted yards seemingly defying gravity and floating in air?

Oh by the way, Happy St Valentine's Day to all my fellow modeling friends, I hope you enjoy the day with a close loved one.

In This particular optical illusion, I had no hand in.

After further review, I've decided to complete the mizzen, than move directly to finishing up the head gear on the bowsprit.  Because this rigging is standing and can be considered part of the hull...and I want to finish this up....so their will be no interference with the masts once they are installed.

You may be wondering why I haven’t finished the main yard……?  Well, I will finish that one after the mast is mounted and the main shrouds are rigged.  The main gets in the way of rigging the shrouds and rigging the upper yards.  Plus it is mobile on its truck so………We wait.

Rob, beautiful work. As I said to Vlad, the recreation of these yards reveal how substantially made they really were. It makes total sense to rig from stern to fore, as this will tighten shrouds as you move forward, culminating in the bowsprit.

Thanks Rich. I think the overall look of tightly furled sails will be nice.

A lot of work goes into each yard…….sorry I can’t be faster at Glory’s construction.

Rob, neither you nor Vlad have any reason to apologize to anyone about the pace of your construction progress. You're scratch building practically every single component in your museum quality builds. Personally, just like the carefully patient process we developed to rediscover the true glory in "GLORY of the SEAS" I strongly prefer a pace that is prudent and gives the very impressive results you're both creating. In this case, the time worn adage is definitely true "haste makes waste."

Im reading thru beautiful book from McKay descendant D McKay and his famous sailing ships, and im astouned how often were royal topgalant and even topsail masts struck down by heavy gale. even mainmast sprung ! flying cloud 3 times thru one capehorn ride. With sails furled and fastened  i cant quite imagine powers of nature that were hunting these boats. must have been total havoc.

My apology was more directed at myself.....I wish I just had more time...cuz I'd be in the boat shop most of it, if I did.

Well...I have the same 24 hours as everyone else...I just can't appropriate the time to model building as I wish.  So I tackle my build in tiny projects.  It brings more satisfaction and I feel as if I'm accomplishing more then I really am.

Yes....as you read...you will discover that driving Captains and owners were much of the cause.  The *Horn* run and the lower 40 was some of the roughest and largest seas a clipper would race through.  One important thing to remember.......that is one reason why McKay built such large clippers.

One other detail that will amaze, is that these captains and crews would jury/repair their vessels at sea....in the bad weather....at night....in freezing rain.   It's almost hard to imagine the Grit within these men.  Time was money.

Rob, Vladimir

this link brings you to an amazing piece of art depicting Clipper 'Flying Cloud' as she actually appeared in her record breaking journey rounding Cape Horn on her maiden voyage. I read a book which made great reference to her Log and the descriptions of multiple challenges to her rig is hair raising. Back then, these circumstance were simply part of the routine.

Read the book on the Flying Cloud, it's an amazing tale.  The Captains wife even was a master navigator and had to step up when trouble was afoot.

Great Read for sure.  What an adventure.

Vladimir,

Perhaps the most incredible feat of seamanship was displayed by Donald McKay's brother Lauchlan, easy going yet hard driving Captain of the 1852 Extreme Clipper "Sovereign of the Seas." October 12th, 1852 on her Maiden voyage the great ship under a heavy press of sail experienced an incredibly complicated dis-masting which affected all three masts. I've attached a sailor's first person account which describes in great detail their almost unbelievable act of seamanship under the capable, inspired leadership of the indomitable Captain McKay.

The skill and tenaciousness of the Carpenter and his apprentices.......is amazing.  Not to mention the blacksmith who set up forge on deck in inclement weather to refashion hardware for the refashioned masts/yards.....JUST Amazing Grit under the worst conditions.  All the while the captain is watching the hourglass.  Time is money....did I mention that....?<_<

Rob, what blows my mind is that somehow in the midst of the sea, the Captain and ship's crew managed to completely re-rig the entire vessel in 12 days!
