One of the deadeye tests I'd like to do is determine if the white strops are necessary;  If they can be seen, they are necessary!  Otherwise, I think they make everything a little more out of scale....

Happy Birthday Bob and the deadeyes will not look that noticable when in place- there is so much detail on the finished ship peoples eyes will not be able to take it all in! Yes paint does block the holes in the deadeyes but i cleared mine out with a .68 drill- however watch out on deadeyes smaller than 5mm! I use two pieces of U shaped wire mounted at their centre in a piece of stripwood as a deadeye spacer while rigging shrouds.

Thanks, Popeye and Keith;  I do plan on making a deadeye spacer when rigging the shroulds;  I might set up a test to see if these white strips are necessary;  I don't want to be lazy, but it sure would save lots of time...

My sister brought up my late Father's lathe;  It's still missing pieces, the belts have disintegrated, and it's still in the "drill press" mode..  I have no idea how to turn metal (or wood) on a lathe, but I will learn.  I plan on dismantling and restoring this Unimat lathe, and giving it another 50 years of work!

Lot of love/hate with this thing.  Dad was a music teacher; who did model railroading and RC airplanes.  As an engineer, I think I could make more use of the lathe... When I look at it I see my Father; who never let me touch his lathe..

But a lot of Love :D :D

I'm a lonnnnng way from doing anything with this lathe;  i remember dad turning little screws with this; but the belts have disintegrated, and I'm not sure everything is there..

That is an original Unimat and worth it's weight in gold.  While not as powerful as the Sherline, you can do anything you want with it.  I have seen everything from pocket watches and wind up toys to a working tractor motor made with it.

The motor on this unit fires right up, with the sound I remember from childhood, and the (bed screws?) turn very smoothly, so all it would really need would be new belts, rewired power cord, (there's a short in the old cord), plus the missing accessories, which I believe my sister located.  She lives 200 miles away, so on her next visit she'll bring them.  I'd still like to do a complete restoration, after approx. 40+ years of use (I know he bought this sometime in the 50's, and he passed in 2000, and was out in his shop every single day that I recall).

Thanks, Popeye for the link;  I'll be referencing it often, I believe.

As this is not "Model Lathe World"  I'll wait to talk about the lathe when the Cutty's little 6 pound signal cannon is turned from brass....

Why I think about " Pigs on the wing" song by Pink Floyd from album "Animals" ?

This future BBQ is singing:

If you didn't care what happened to

me,

And I didn't care for you

We would zig zag our way through

the boredom and pain

Occasionally glancing up through

the rain

Wondering which of the buggers to

blame

And watching for pigs on the wing.

Ok.  I'm still working on the Cutty;  but had a good deal from Dale, one of our MSW friends, who offered an uncompleted build of the HMS Victory by Mantua/Sergal from the 1970's, for the price of shipping.  This is one of the "Big three" that I plan on completing in my lifetime (Cutty, Connie, and the Victory)

The Niagara is on my list because she's such a proud and intriguing ship, with wonderful lines, and a great (short) history.

So,  four concurrent builds now... :o

Yes Nenad, I admit I am powerless when it comes to ships... first thing Admiral said:  "Where are you going to put it??"  When the new arrival came.

However..

I had bought a scroll saw (cheap model, around $100) just to cut out two 2 x3 cm blocks for the Niagara.  It sat idle after that.

So now I am using it every day to cut pieces for the Victory, and getting a little better each time.  (I still am quite bad;  I need some more sandpaper.. :P

Learning new skills will give all of our projects that much better attention to the detail.

Still need to buy and learn how to use an airbrush.

I'm still not sure how I can make the scrollwork; (I'm waiting for your solution)  but initially I thought photo-etched brass.  This would have the fine detail, but only two dimensional.  I think that's what I'll opt for, finally.  But then I'll have to learn how to do the etching.

I worked for a circuit board manufacturing company 10 years ago, and I would have been able to do all the photolithograpy and other prep at work, I would have just needed slightly different chemistry to etch brass instead of copper....
