HMB Endeavour by Micklen32 - OcCre - 1:54

Recommended Posts

I'm sorry Mick that I worried you... :(

When you sanding that part a little, just that much , that you don't see the line anymore, it's gonna be perfect.

Don't forget Mick, it's a beauty, it's gonna be an beauty and don't push your self to the limit.

There are things on the SI that can be better, but that's for the next one.

All the way we are learning and do things better.

We are building for our pleasure and not for a museum !

Right

I was waiting for paint to dry on the Taxi so I sat and stared at the Endeavour

I stared at the photos of finished models

I put Sjors and Alistairs words to work in my brain and slowly I began to see the problems

When I have finished the Taxi I will get to work sanding

Thank you both for pointing it out

Keep it up  :10_1_10:

I'm not sure I'm ready to tackle the hull planking!   I've been reading the very good guide on hull planking from this site.. but the comments about "Stormy Seas" are making me nervous. B)

Still this is my first build and a real learning experience.

I hope I don't need it but what is the 'filler' mentioned by Mick. I hope also to have an update soon as I'm waiting for paints and balsa to arrive.

Current builds : AL HMB Endeavour 1:60

Next build :       Vasa 1:100

Previous Build : Nil

There is no such thing as a dumb question.... other than the one not asked.  :dancetl6:

Hi Rob

As Alistair says, the Endeavour is not the easiest ship to plank because of its shape

As to filler

Sometimes your first planking may not be good enough and there may be depressions

Lumps can be sanded out

Depressions must be filled

A high quality fine wood filler

I have actually made the mistake of giving the stern too much shape now I realise it

Also on the bow there is too much of a line between the hull planking and the balsa fill

That has to be rounded out so it doesn't show through the finish planking

There is always the option if the top planking doesn't look right of going over it again

It is only 0.6mm so you can normally get away with it

I did it with the Spirit as I wasn't happy

There are normally ways out

Don't be help back Rob

Keep it up  :10_1_10:

Hi Mick (and Bankie)

Apologies - I did not mean to worry you with my comments. I just foresaw an issue coming up that could be averted. If you have a look on this log (not mine) http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/124-hmb-endeavour-by-captain-slog-caldercraft-164/page-2 - page 2 there are lots of pictures of the bow and stern on Endeavour which show a nice planking flow and do not have the step at the stern that you have formed. I still think looking ahead by laying planks a few rows down from where you are at will give you an picture of what is coming and why there may be an issue. Perhaps I'm wrong - I'm just going by your photos. While tricky there many hulls like Endeavour's and with simple planning the harder aspects of the form can be easily planked. That said I'm no expert in this matter.

Sorry again - I did not mean to alarm you. Keep it up and I'm sure you'll have a very fine hull when finished!

Cheers

Alistair

Hi Alistair

Looking at Slogs build, especially with the rudder on, I can see I have totally the wrong shape and I could be having problems with the rudder as well as the planking

I will get my build of the Taxi finished and then sit down with some sanding blocks and maybe even the Dremel

Thanks a lot for the comments and help everyone

I will soon be back to work on this

Hi Alistair,

thanks heaps for your advice and please don't stop them.. it may worry me a little but best to know earlier rather than later.  Also as Sjors wrote.. "We are building for our our pleasure and not for a museum."

That is so true and the minute I get too stressed with my hobby.. I should stop and do something else.  In the meantime, I'm really enjoying the challenge and the fantastic advice and encouragement I receive here.

Thanks all

That's the spirit Bankie,

At the end everything will comes together and you will be very happy with the end result !

That count also for you Mick !

Don't give up and learn your lesson with it…..

It took me 5 builds till the level that I am now…and even now I make mistakes and fix things.

That's nothing to be shamed of !

Learn and learn more.

Well I promised a photo of the Taxi when it is finished so here it is

post-3712-0-03808000-1374760884_thumb.jpg

It actually amazed me just how difficult it was

Anyway it is finished other than maybe a bit of touching up on the black

One more just to give you a view inside before the doors went on

post-3712-0-48102200-1374761016_thumb.jpg

I have made an executive decision about the Endeavour

I am going to plank it twice  :o

I don't know whether it's a good idea or not but I need the practice and I want it looking perfect

I will start on that tomorrow but we are off on a weeks holiday soon so I will be able to have a rest

No!  I am not taking it with me  :piratetongueor4:

I am going to try and get a bit of fishing in

We are staying in a luxury chalet within spitting distance of the Avon just outside Stratford upon Avon

We went last year and enjoyed it so much we rebooked

Anyway back to the Endeavour tomorrow

Well done with the taxi Mick !!!!!

A few horses in the front and it is finished !

Thanks for the pictures.

If I understand you right you make the Endeavour triple planked???????

It's a possibility….

I never done that so…..I'm curious how that turns out.

But first enjoy your trip in the chalet…..with fishing…….and catch some fish !

Augie is fishing and caught nothing  :D

Keep Europe high and catch some !

Thank you Sjors

Yes I suppose you could call it triple

The top two layers will only be 1.1mm between them though

I am going to change the wood as well

Instead of it being Lime and Sapelli I am going to finish it with Beech and Walnut

The Beech will be stained anyway and I think the walnut will look a lot more natural than the Sapelli

First job however is some sanding  B)

Today I grabbed the hull and a large selection of sanding instruments

Oh and my little hammer and went outside and sanded like a man posessed

I got the bow coming round as smooth as I could and then reshaped the hull

I am hoping I got it right now

I came back inside and did a bit of planking

It seemed to go on pretty well but I am now determined to do another layer with the beech and the walnut when they arrive

Anyway here she is now

Take a good look at the stern and you will see the shape has changed totally

I am hoping this will be ok now

I imagine it will be so much easier to put the top layer on as I will be working with a good layer anyway rather than the now so good first layer I did

I must learn to get those frst layers much better

I will probably slow down a bit now leading up to our week away and then get my head down on the final layer when we get back

Hi Mick

You've cracked it I reckon. Like Sjors, I felt bad for making you worry but now I'm glad that I did. That stern looks much, much better and you're on your way to a fine hull shape. Have a great break and I look forward to your progress when you return.

Thanks a lot all

I was hoping it looked a lot better

It is so different working on such a large hull

I have seen several people on forums saying that the Endeavour was their first build

I am certain I wouldn't have wanted it for my first build

I think the Sergal Racehorse was perfect

Anyway

A question

I have drilled the bores out a bit on my cannon so it looks like they do have a hole to stick the cannonball down  :piratetongueor4:   :pirate41:

I have also put them in a metal aging, brass blackening, or whatever you would like to call it, fluid

This is how they look at the moment

post-3712-0-44938700-1374917370_thumb.jpg

What do you think???

Do they look ok or do you think they need a bit more time in the fluid

Or should I just paint them black  :(

I don't really want to do that as I shouldn't think a used cannon would be a smooth colour, but if you say that would be more realistic I will take your thoughts on board

Right back to some nice steady planking  B)

Hi Mick

I think cannons look more realistic blackened instead of painted, give them a good buff with a rag and put them in the blackening liquid again. It usually takes two goes to get them blackened properly.

Cheers

Steve

On the whole, does OcCre have good instructions for their models. The picture of the instructions you show on the first page looked pretty good. Was it like that for all their kits?

Thanks,

Richard

Hi Richard

The OcCre instructions have been very good

What you get is a series of photographs showing the build part by part

Then with each photo, or set of photos you get written instructions

For example, the Endeavour has around 260 photographs with concise instructions

There are also many full size plans showing the ship in side view and plan plus plans of the masts, rigging and sails

There isn't any written instructions for the masts or rigging though but the plans are very precise

All in all the OcCre instructions are very good

Another point is I purchased my kits direct from OcCre

I hope that helps

I have finished the penultimate layer on the hull

It's nowhere near perfect but then I wasn't trying to be

post-3712-0-65906500-1375112570_thumb.jpg

A bit of sanding to do now and then we are away for our week

When we get back there will be a lot of thinking how I will do the final planking

I really like the way Steve (shipaholic) has done the light wood to follow the shape of the gunwales rather than having them virtually horizontal

I will probably work at getting that look and then, again, as Steve did, I will let the dark wood find it's own line as much as possible and use fillers

We will see when I get back
