Great work Vlad……just wonderful.  I like the metal edging and detail of the slats.   But you are making the same mistake I originally did.  The opening for the shrouds is the full length of the top. From the forward trim to the aft timber.  The full length of the hounds timber.

Here is a photo of the actual design.   Sorry, not to be a Debby Downer,  but accuracy is accuracy.   Other than that….beautiful work.

Rob, great catch on the 'Lubber hole opening. It looks like that's Glory's foremast closest to the camera, behind a massive metal exhaust pipe installed with her factory conversion. Could you please post the entire picture, I'm curious as to where this originated.

This is Glory as she sat prior to her being sold to be burned for the metal in her hull.  Several other images show the same open construction.  The main mast is a  replacement mast from her original and her main mast is a built mast.  It is unclear if the design for her tops changed when she received her new masts.  But it is clear from this image that her tops were not as bulky and did indeed lack the central cross timber aft of her main mast doubling.

I wasn't implying that you change anything...but simply pointing out the actual top of Glory at her later years.  Artistic license at this point is the guide of the day.

Great work by the way.

Rob

Rob, i just asked so that we know the era top was inatalled on her. by the way i definitely removed planks and widened it as per picture. from  shrouds rigging persepctive its just natural for it to be wider as 5th or 6th hemp is coming fro very behing angle under the top thus strain is reduced and almost removed totally from tiny square-ish opening and applied to natural pushing force  from mast not cornering top. I think it also answers my previous queation so top therefore doesnt neee t obe as rigid . Frtont is reinforced by another bar in top and thats all.

This is from that newest one from Mike.  when Glory was getting her final survey.

See how much room was available in the lubber's hole even on this early image of the Charles W. Morgan.....  Structure is similar to Glory's top.

Thanks much Rob. I must say This scale is smallest i could handle  I reached a limit and i obviously struggle with some metal work riveting pieces that I wish I redo them to look better. but at the same time i they will be burnished black  so it will be barely visible only with magnifying. good thing is there is always many pieces i can try better. I totally kudos you for working on 1:96 scale. I personally cant imagine doing that minuscule thing.

Heck i assembled numbers for hearts &bulleyes for standing rigging , and i am eyeing for best quality possible black hemps there is on the marekt nowadays. i want her standing rigging shine and she deserves doesnt she:)

its still far far away - maybe summer - just planning ahead.

after I finish lower masts I will set those aside and will have to return back to deck for longer time . as there is plenty working assemblings missing -  pumps,  lifeboats, windlass, anchors and chain mechanisms, so i will be way way behind :) .

speaking of Main shrouds, i will go down 1 mm from original thikness so they fit to deadeyes...

I've spent years determining that 1/96 is the best scale for me.  One: it is large enough to present an imposing model with great detail and can command a space.  1/96 is also small enough that detail is not lost, but not so large that attention to fine detail done poorly doesn't give itself away.

1/96 is just right for me...small enough to be able to cram in lots of detail but still avoid what a larger  scale demands in wood carpentry and fine metal detail work .  And since I paint all my models....I am free to use whatever material suits me to accomplish the task at hand.  Not fearing exposure... that I fell from the PURISTS faith.

Adding the fine deck furniture is an important part in the finished detail.  Don't worry about being behind....building our prospective models has never been a race between us.  However, it can be a race within yourself, if you have an internal time clock about such thing

My scale is too small for this, but you will need to use accurate chain for your scale....check out this site to get the right chain for your model...it will make a world of difference.  They're called the "Floating Drydock" look them up and check out their scale accurate printed chain.

I believe the chain from this outfit is the naval center lug type chain for anchors.  Perfect stuff for anchor chains.  Indeed check them out.

Folks, someone asked how to make composite masting. Im sure there IS many perfect days i Will demonstrate my quick and fairly satisfying way that takes 1 your to make on glory mizenmast .

IMG_20220129_195821.thumb.jpg.789c05aee2dbf238e2b6dc41deea0065.jpg

I started from round profile i had to rasp off flush All four sused to make square profile. Who IS doing IT out of square timber, its even easier. No work to be done ať this point

Here rasped off - level checked only by eye

IMG_20220130_102314.thumb.jpg.10651827c252a6f1b981243ab74e4951.jpg

Moving along i simply glued planks to the place i sanded. Make sure overall thickness with added planks IS just diameter of finishedast or tiny thicker. I always use baswood as its breeze to dané square profile to round by Hand simply with rounded paper in hands...

This tíme i used planks corner to corner  touching eachother. Who needs more complicatedast corner needs to be chamfered - but making wedges IS thus more  complicated

This IS eqsiest way looking sharp. Top and Norton IS angled AS mizzen IS quite "Pisa tower :)"

IMG_20220130_111740.thumb.jpg.64ad729b7a165cf1ea9435fd39e3d72b.jpgIMG_20220130_112403.thumb.jpg.dc11992c8381eec9cf3b95e047de6961.jpg

i Made All from lefrovers. - All planks cut by knife from 3 MM thick plank in my case.

Now i Made or found premade square strake just to fit to the corner "hole". You Can see just attached IT here...

IMG_20220130_115300.thumb.jpg.6dfdb66b0b3d542bbc9045287323af35.jpg

Oh by the way _ marking . I Made miniature right angle helper :) and aftereasuring IT gave me line to each súde. Measure miggle line where band IS - and inzerát wedges very vageuly to the center of line. Very quick.

IMG_20220130_114707.thumb.jpg.fed2f805382c699955118fd8fd0e3797.jpgIMG_20220130_114833.thumb.jpg.861a1a7b2404a12f94418c25d96d3b3b.jpg

After this - simple.

I cut square inserting strake by 6 MM iny case, having 10 MM insertions holes...whatever measure you decide

I cut IT by knife simply rounding knife as Saw would be thick fór IT. Than i break strake and sand center flush. IT Can be done by Saw, any way possible :)

Than gluing with  eyeing fór center Mark ....i roughly pushed them - IT Will be cut off anyway as showed so IT wireless mg unglue and Will be sanded easier. IMG_20220130_115937.thumb.jpg.31dee90404fa82a8e2a5dc0eb66ca084.jpgIMG_20220130_121252.thumb.jpg.5d0b180ee2e9ecef3bf64e236f7c7a30.jpgIMG_20220130_115959.thumb.jpg.a47403fd8ff71c6064c3e230cded72a4.jpgIMG_20220130_121920.thumb.jpg.21689e45472b5ce2e2d3777abe04745b.jpgIMG_20220130_123158.thumb.jpg.25781a7db80893c91d3e1255f01f787a.jpgIMG_20220130_123333.thumb.jpg.30e697d1c35c6f677b88ff15d87f53aa.jpg

Last step. I round sanding paper to the Palm of hand and move only perpendicular to the masť - Twist.  never along the mast.

With tough paper perfect round IS fairly quicky done, finishing with smoother one. Than i malé bands from black paper thats IT.

Simple isnt IT :) enjoy folks. I was scared to do IT before...or struggled

Finished:

Vlad...wonderful job...just wonderful.

Hey..can you take a pic of the plan you are using that shows the cathead details.  I'm curious.

Vladimir, it's nice to see the great progress you've made on mating your large "GLORY of the SEAS" replica. All I can think is how truly imposing she must be in person. I'm sure the beautiful images you share don't fully do her justice.

It may be perspective distortion from the photos but in case not, I'm just going to let you know my observations. Please understand in no way is this intended to be critical, only to aid in your goal of achieving the most accurate replica. At 94', the lower mainmast is 3' taller than the 91' lower foremast, yet the photo makes it appear as if the foremast is slightly taller. Both topmasts are 54' (more precisely fore topmost is 53' 6&5/8", main topmost is 53' per McKay's corrections). For some reason, the main topmost again looks shorter. Combined dimensions above main topmast are 70' a full 14' taller than the 56' high foremast components. Meanwhile at 85' the mizzenmast is just 6' shorter than the foremast. However, since the foremast has a 17' masthead and the mizzen's is just 14' the actual height difference is just 3'. It looks much shorter than that on your replica. I've included 2 appendices which list all of Glory's mast and yard dimensions taken from Michael Mjelde's sources.

Thanks Rich Rob. Rich , all welcomed. IT Can be two facts. All masts from top Up are not yet glued and exactly positioned in there Holes, just Stick in so some could have Been Lower orvhigher than should... however you can rest easy on your mind :) I am certain that it is angle and lens distortion as every single mast was recalcualted by online scle converter accordingly after this Michaels chart. probably best view is by front pic where you can see proportional height of tops and caps between main front and mizzen mast. Main topmast is exact same size as front as i know these measures by memory now :) ...

to be exact im going to measure them again but Im posring topmasts dissasembled so you can see how deceiving is all the ship. the fact that ship is tall and i have to use wide angle lens of photo because of its best quality it distorts massively. ill tr to photo her with standard lens. :)
