You're right Dave. She's easy to find but I coudn't resist posting a pic her.  ^_^ And probably because of her somewhat smaller size compared to the other tallships shes seems not that well known among ship lovers. I think its one of the most beautiful.

Topsail schooners with their mix of square and fore-and-aft sails have long been favorites of mine. Thanks for posting her.

Correct, it is the Lithuanian FSRU (Floating Storage and Re-gasification Unit) Independence  ;) (Nepriklausomybė in Lithuanian). This ship will break Russia's monopoly on Lithuania's energy supply and allow Lithuania to purchase, store and distribute LNG at a base fuel cost of 1/3 to 1/4 of what they've been forced to pay the Russians. Independence will begin operation later this year in the port of Klaipėda, Lithuania.

Your turn, Kevin.

Just found them.. wow, that is some of the oddest looking racing I've seen in years.. I've 'Hiked Out' on racing yachts but that is ridiculous and it is totally brilliant !!

Log Canoes from Chesapeake Bay ?

Thanks for bringing them to my attention Kevin, as I said they are beautiful machines.

Eamonn, you are correct.

The log canoe is a type of sailboat developed in the Chesapeake Bay region. Based on the dugout, it was the principal traditional fishing boat of the bay until superseded by the bugeye and the skipjack. However, it is most famous as a racing sailboat, and races continue to be held.

Thanks Kevin, and mine is in the same line as yours.. that is a Racing Sail Boat where the crew Hikes Out, admittedly in this boat the Deck itself is extended out so you can Hike in comfort.. well sort of comfort anyhoo after all it is a serious racing machine..

The boat in question is the one on the back ground, and yup she is HUGE, those wee dots along her side are the crew 'hiking out' :P

Am off to bed now folks so I won't be around again for a few hours.

KZ1 (The Big Boat) and US1 (Stars & Stripes) in the 1988 America's Cup. Although KZ1 used the latest materials and design features, it was still a throw-back to the even larger boats (in sail area and displacement) used in the early 20th century Cup races.

Spot on D, the infamous 'miss match' 1988 Cup Races.. indeed KZ1 was truly amazing, virtually wakeless for so big a boat, but Mr Connors threw the 'Cat' at them and that was that ^_^

I think the New Zealand boys closest look at the American's was at the starts, cos once that Start Gun went off so did they.. :P

Love him or hate him Big Dennis Connors was a great racing sailor!

Over to you D..

I watched the 1988 Cup races on TV and thought I recognized the two boats. The closest NZ1 got to Stars & Stripes was at the start as you said. I remember the race result reversed in court and that decision overturned on appeal. Lawyers have no place in yacht racing except as ballast.

 Oops, I proof my posts and usually catch my typos (I NEVER make a mistake, just mistype) but clearly missed this one.

Looks like a uscg buoy tender.

But which one....

There were 39 of this size buoy tender built of which 25 are still in use by several small countries, privately owned or mothballed in reserve. I'll narrow it down - "B".

The "B" clue did not refer to the first letter of the ship's name.

Had Ammo delivered by a vessel that looks like this on in RVN, " Uss Brule AKL 28", sometimes she delivered twice a week, it was a small WW 2 cargo ship and there were a lot of them used in the Pacific to move cargo around that did not justify an full blown AKA.  The Brule while delivering ammo was hit with 7 recoil-less rifle rounds, 'some records say rockets, but the crew at the time said recoil less rifles', she had a hold full plus a deck load of ammo for us. A fire was started in the deck load of ammo but they got it out. Needed to inspect every round from that delivery and even then I had a 40 MM round just clear the bore and explode, the shrapnel in the water was a half moon shape away from the gun, split the case and broke the extractors, glad to shoot the last of that load. Believe the Pueblo was a converted vessel of the same type, was on the rivers in RVN when she was taken and we didn't know if it would effect the mess we were involved in. Probably some of those vessels were converted to Buoy tenders after the war, they might have been commissioned as such.

It's been a week and no more guesses have been posted so I'll recap what is known:

It's a 180' buoy tender (the only USCG vessel to have classes) built during WW2. 39 of them were built.

It's one of the 6 "B" or Mesquite class.

It's still in existence and in service in the navy of a small country. Down from 6 to 2.

The name does not begin with "B" which eliminates 1 - leaving only 1 possibility.

Ahoy from a former "Coastie"

This old Girl has to be the CGC Sweetgum (WBL-309)

I was almost assigned to her at one point in my Coast Guard Service.

You should also wait for confirmation that it is also the correct ship from the person who posted...

Welcome aboard, Ted, you got it.

She is now in Panama's National Maritime Service with the name SMN Independencia (A-401) since 2002. She is used primarily as a tender for Panama's fleet of coastal patrol vessels. Here's a recent photo of her:

post-70-0-15211300-1395610064_thumb.jpg

By the way, this is the tenth mystery ship in a row I have posted that at one time or other in their history had the name Independence going back to Atzmaut (Hebrew for Independence) and the 12th including the USS Independence, the United States' first ship of the line (posted by me), and the Texas First Navy cutter Independence (posted by Kevin from Hampton Roads) in recent months. The latter was the ex-US Revenue Cutter Ingham that was the source of the Coast Guard's motto Semper Paratus - Always Ready. I think this is a good time to end the string of Independences.

Your turn, Ted.

You coasties don't always get the recognition and respect you deserve - thank you very much for your service.
