hello everyone :D

Recommended Posts

Hello MSW,

My name is Lohengrin, I am a 21-year-old university student from Germany and completely new to the wonderous world of model ship building!
Through one of my classes, I got introduced to the Franklin Expedition and since my father suggested I build the HMS Terror, I have been hooked on the idea.
I have been starring lovingly at the product page, contemplating this purchase, but since I do not have any experience in model kit building, I can't gauge whether I am massively overestimating my own skill and patience. While I would call myself a good artist and skilled crafter, building a ship seems to be on an entirely different level of difficult. Starting with a smaller build would probably be a smarter approach, but since my interest lies in this one specific ship only for now, I can't seem to make myself dedicate much energy into anything else. (Insert joke about the hubris of getting stuck looking for the North West Passage and me believing I can build that same ship. How hard could it be?)

Jokes aside, reading everyone’s posts has been a blast. This is truly a gold mine of resources and seeing everyone's dedication and willingness to help is amazing! I feel much more confident tackling this challenge with this wonderful community at my disposal :3 We shall see how it goes, i suppose.

Thanks so much for having me!

I think this is likely to be a difficult build, but if you have the passion and patience to stick with it, and ask lots of questions, you should be able to make a success of it. I've seen other people do equally difficult ships as their first build - it's mainly a matter of not giving up when it gets difficult, but persisting, getting help and advice and also recognising that you will make mistakes - it's part of the process, and not letting that stop you.

I'm pretty sure there are already build logs on MSW for the same model. Look at them carefully (you can access them via the Search bar at the top right of this page) and learn all you can from what others did. And ask lots of questions if you hit difficulty. With persistence I'm sure you will be able to produce a model you can be proud of.

Best wishes,

Steven

Welcome to MSW, Lohengrin.  Louie da Fly gave you some excellent advice.  I would add that buy a kit such as longboat.. something simple to get started and then continue researching here on MSW.  There are tutorials for how to plank among other things which will go a long way in getting you on board.

This is bang on.

I would add, you're young so you may not have fully realized your tendencies. I would say most people get excited about something and dive in only for that interest, excitement and motivation to wain after weeks or months.

You don't know yet if this will be something you're truly passionate about. I would suggest going a bit easier on your patience and bank account and starting with a true 'beginner' ship to first determine if this is something you will keep your interest in. However, if you're fine with the idea of an 80 percent chance to have a half finished project tucked into a corner or on the shelf then dive right into the Terror, the 20 percent chance that you'll journey on is worth the risk, in that case!

Either way, good luck and welcome!
