Last post for this year.  We did the bowsprit, not an easy thing because of it s low angle and cut out the lower three masts (rake to be adjusted a bit later). We did some other small things, but there so time to take pictures.  Time to go to a party. Happy new year to everyone in particular to those few that follow this log.

The last touch of color. This is dry mounted, i am not going to paint the top masts or anything else, the white looks brighter in the pics then what it s in reality, it also tends to get a yellowish tint with years, anyway we are going to "stain" it a bit with dirty hands that shouldn t be a problem for the other two builders.  What do you think?

Yesterday was exactly 2 months from the start of the build! Things are a bit slower than at the start, for more reasons, a bit of lack of interest but mostly unusually warm weather, so all the three builders prefer to go outside Anyway the hull and superstructure is completed, except for the anchors....masts are almost done (still dry mounted). Next of course is the rigging, not the favorite part for the chief builder, but here two pairs of small hands might help a lot

Thank you Nenad, we ll sure keep going, one of the things i want my kids to learn is to finish what we have started. It s just that it s so warm that we usually go for a ride with bycicles or something like that and then later they are too tired or have to prepare for school,

Well i have no idea, unfortunately i lost the old pics due to a hard disk crash.After a long hiatus the building of the Thermopylae is continuing! In the mean time we (with my 2 kids) build the Panart s battle station, of which i posted the pics in the gallery. I am of course doing most of the work here,

 

The masts, the standing rigging and most of the ratlines are done, nothing really interesting, apart from the difficulty because of the small size of the model. Time to do the "pennoni" (flagploes?) next.

Thank you, yes the scale is a real challenge, The ship keeps moving around all the time as i am working on it  it s really a paperweight.

Speaking of scale and size

Done the yards on the mizzen. I have a question, where are the "extensions" on the yards of the main mast suppose to be? Under the yard itself or above, any general rule? The plans show the them placed under on the lower yards, the upper ones above, is that correct? Please see the pictures for what i mean,  as i am slowly learning the english nautical terms

If that's what the plans show, I'd follow that unless you have research indicating otherwise. I know Cutty Sark had hers arranged that way. Initially stuns'l booms as they are called were all above the yard. This is cumbersome when it comes time to furl sails. They need to be triced up out of the way so the sail can be furled then lashed back in position. By suspending them below the lower yard, they are out of the way. Not sure how many other ships used this method but I know CS did. Several others did as well and your lovely lady may very well be one of them.

beautiful build you have so far........you and your crew have done a wonderful job.   I have this same kit.......a present from the admiral.   I haven't started it yet....just gathering information at the moment.   I notice that you don't have the photo etch.........I found it,  and will be ordering it since my kit doesn't have it either.   I agree with some who have commented......the scale is going to be very challenging.   good choice of color.....I'm not lov'in the kit color either  

 

too bad about the pictures,  I wish I could see more.  usually,  I do Billing kits,  and I've come to understand the instructions.   this kit looks like they pewked on the sheet!        the stuns'l booms are arranged that way........but I have seen them in other angles as well.  the lower booms are most likely in their 

'stowed state',  since they are not being used.   in use,  they are positioned directly in front of the mast,  and out farther.  I have done a few models with them,  and they really add width to the model.   look really sweet too!   I'll look forward in seeing more of your build.......not too much more to go,  at the rate you've been building her

We have the newer version of the kit, where there used to be photo etched brass now there is photo etched wood, like the crew quarters or the name plate of the ship. The scale is a challenge indeed, but on the other side, one have the excuse not to be so precise in building it as a true copy of the ship, but in a more "artistic or figurative" way, something i like. 

I also did a bit of research and it seems that the Thermopylae was indeed green, not blue.I would like to re post the pictures, but as i mentioned in a previous post, they got lost due to a HD failure, the repair of which is estimated at 700 eur The instructions are basic, but the model is not an overly complicated one. I guess you ll open a build log, i ll be glad to try to help if needed. This is the first model with the stuns`l booms i am building, i wasn t sure of the plans make sense. Looking forward to seeing your build.

the wood etch is included in the kit.   Cornwall Boats has it in brass photo etch,  as well as the wood etch.  I'll order it and see what I can do with it......I've never worked with photo etch before.   I've got a few projects that I want to clear up before I open that box {although......I've been gazing in there from time to time}.  I'm trying to find some decent pictures of the deck.........with the smaller scale,  some things don't seem right or may have been looked over by the manufacturer.

 

nice job on the yards     the bracket for the boom looks good.........many different ships have them.   looking around the site,  you'll see the different techniques other have used to make them.  I did them for my first build of the Revell Cutty Sark 1:96.....as well as my first build of the United States.  the added sails really widen them out!  super job!

I think the windlass is misplaced on the kit, taking the Cutty Sark as a comparison it should be in front of the fore mast near the fore cargo hatch, but there is not enough room

A bit of a progress today. The first goal is for all the rigging to be straight and under tension, an elementary thing with any ship model, but not so easy with this one. If not for anything else, i keep bumping, hooking with the tools and so on the rigging that s already in place. At least my sons small hands are helping a bit.

Five more yards to go! Nine done, like on a ship of the line, more or less. For sure clippers are ideal if one likes doing the rigging.  Btw, i admit i use always too much rope, but the kit does`t have nearly enough rope in the box, future builders be advised.

Thank you Popeye! To be honest the work on the rigging is very basic, but this being kind of a teamwork with two very young kids (10 and 12) it s ok. As a matter of fact i had to stop myself from correcting some of their work and being too pedantic, because this way i was killing all the fun from it.

well.....you want to correct some of it.......after all,  your teaching them something that will last them a lifetime     I applaud what you and your crew are doing.......I think its wonderful......and your coming out with a great build to boot!  wish I could have done this with my two boys.......sadly,  the interest wasn't there.   I'm enjoying the build.......be proud of your ship mates

Thank you. They are loosing interest too now, especially the older one, hard to fight games on the phones, the battle station was easier and more fun, but one thing i want them to accomplish is to finish the job, a good lesson for life

 .......oh, that......you have me confused.   I was commenting on someone else's build.   perhaps one of these days I'll get up the nerve to build a vessel that large.  for now though,  I'm content with the projects I have going.........I have several here.   this hobby is so addictive.......when I first started,  it got my mind going in so many directions....it was insane!      so far,  I've been able to move around my builds,  doing a little here and a little there.

 

I hope to see this build finished with no hands jumping ship      I wish you well
