Thank J and Jesse. I've gotten a couple more joggled planks done now. It's just a little bit easier than I expected it would be--and a lot more fun than hull planking.

Still joggling away... The little mark on the second plank from the left is what happens when your knife blade breaks from being pushed too hard. Oh well, it's going to be under the starboard cathead...I hope. Ahem...make that the port cathead.

You are getting there. What some have done is use xacto chisels honed to razor edge instead of a knife this gives them more control.

That's a good idea, David. I've got one of those and will give it a try.

One more plank to go on the starboard side of the deck. If the waterway there looks a little ragged, that's because it is. I glued in a plank that was too narrow and proceeded to munch up things a bit getting it out. Here are some pics.

Thanks for the kind words, Sam and J. Lots of learning involved and some more splinters for my scrap pile. I've got company coming tomorrow, so the deck will have to stay unfinisherd at least until the weekend.

Are you guys going to stay up to get a look at the blood moon tomorrow night?

Would have liked to have been able to get some photos or it...but its seems that every, and I do mean every, astrological event occurs when we have clouded and overcast conditions...how was the view

We had a totally clear sky and I missed it. I was told it was more of a grayish orange rather than a blood red. Oh well, there will be another in six months.

Steve,

hadn't checked in for a while - nice deck!!

I will post a few pics from the Blood Moon earlier this month on my build log since you brought that up.

I got a great pic of the full moon and an ok pic of the blood moon (it was darker, so the pic just wasn't

as nice...)  here in Iowa it was absolutely breathtaking from 2-3am that night.  definitely worth getting up

to see!!!

The full moon photo is very nice, but that photo of the blood moon is spectacular! Wow, I've got to stay up for the next one. I just plain forgot and fell asleep for this one.

I decided that I didn't want to paint the hull. However, the patches of filler were really bothering me. I somehow came up with the brilliant idea of putting a darker stain on the hull to partially hide the filler. I did this without resealing the hull. I had sanded through all the sealer and forgotten that I had done so. The stain looked horrible--you can see it on one side in the following photos.

The stuff wouldn't sand off, so I was left with a choice between painting and putting on another layer of planking. I chose to plank. It went better and worse than the first round. When I got to the bottom of the hull beneath the transom, I decided to joggle the planks. It looks a little odd, but it's done. There's a dark scratch going up the transom from a slip of my knife. I'm not sure what to do about it. There's going to be a piece of trim going across the bottom of the transom to hide the plank ends. Here are the photos.

Here are some photos of the replanked hull sanded down to 220 grit. I'm happier with it now and will be sure I seal before I LIGHTLY stain. Thanks for reading.

Thanks Bindy, Jesse, and J. I was going to paint, but my painting skills are pretty much non-existent. I'm going to have to look at this ship daily, so I figured I may as well bite the bullet and replank.

I found an old piece of streaky brown/black ebony in a scrap box. I'm making the wales from it right now.

Here's the wale in place. I'm thinking of adding a smaller, thinner one above it in a contrasting color. Maybe a dark mahogany, or maybe painted. Thanks for looking.
