Kingston Class MCVD by dgbot - FINISHED - CARD

Recommended Posts

Hi.  I just noticed the 'CARD' tag on the title of this thread, so I had a look through it.  I see you are discovering all the joys and agonies of paper!  But your experience makes a very valid argument in favor of paper, namely the relative ease and low cost of starting over, if necessary.  There is a learning curve for this medium, and one can already see much improvement between your first few pics and your more recent posts.  Keep at it -- your future efforts will be better still!

Cheers!

I was finally able to assemble the bridge wings.  This proved to be simple, yet the wrong move could mean a do over.  The first thing I did was locate the parts and cut them out.  This time I cut out one side first and on completeion did the other side.  This will prevent clutter as well as not getting anything mixed.

Since each wingg consisted of two pieces gleud back to back I took care that all the fold were correct before the final glue up.  This also meant dry fitting them together and to the bridge,  Considering the condition ,y eyes were in this was not fun. but tediou.  However the end result was worth the extra care.

After making sure of the fit I glued them on and am happy with the result..

The funnels were pretty straight forward.  The problem I had was not with them.

When I tried to glue them to the gundeck I realized I had used a thinner stock and the deck was a little warped.

After cutting out a new deck and making sure of the fit I glued the funnels to the new deck and then glued that over the orignal one.

I just used the kids' colored pencils, David.  I bought them at Michael's for next to nothing.

There are lots of things I like about paper modeling.  The models are inexpensive.  They build quickly.  It doesn't take up much room.  (You could store all the tools you need in a cigar box.)  And the tools you need are pretty basic, readily available and inexpensive.

David,

I only just noticed your log. It looks like you've had a steep learning curve - well done! I know nothing about card modelling, having never made one, but I do recall Chris Coyle posting a really interesting and useful tutorial on the subject. Here is the link if you haven't already found it:

Hi David,

I heard/read/was told that card modelers also use water colour pencils.  They look like ordinary coloured pencils but the 'lead' is quite waxy feeling and dissolve slightly with water.  I didn't really get the hang of them and will try 'almost' dry brushing with acrylic next time.

Cheers

Going throught the plans I have come to the point where I have to make a choice.  The kit has two ways to finish it.  One way the model will be soso. and the advanced way.  Which is more difficult but will make a better looking model.  I have experimented with the beginner parts and was not very satisfied and was going to try and make my own pieces but the advanced parts are better.  This will save me time and a bruising from my sister.  I do not have to ask her to go to Hobby Lobby inthe snow and get me dowls and wire.  So I will proceed and show what I am doing..

Thank you for the information Sailor.  This kit is turning into a real learning experience.

After completing the hull I had to make a decision about using the parts for the superstructure.  The basic pieces did not look good and were very crude so I used the advanced parts.  This involved folding and bending and a exoeriemnting to get the right shape.  I started out with the tower.

Once this was assembled I cut out the antennas andglued them up.  Needless to say I had to print out a few pages before I got anything decent.

Next came the tower assembly and the placement.  Here I was a little off but I have learned what I need to correct this error the next time

The next item was the deck gun and the the rest of the superstructure.  Is this model perfect no.  But considerering it is my first attemp at a new medium I am satisifed.  The next time I do this kit I will apply what I have learned and will use different materials as well.  The antennas will be replaced with wire and the tower will be attached in such away as to insure a square fit.  I have done some research and have found a lot of little things that can be done behing the scenes.  I had a good time and had fun and learned to techniques.  To me that is what made this kit fun.
