You could draw a sea scene in which there was your C.W. Morgan Whaleboat in which there was a knife on which there was a sea scene again in which there was your C.W. Morgan Whaleboat again in which... m0124.gif

Oh no! That would drive me mad. I would have to become a chemist!

... Maybe more time in the POD with the doors closed until the heat sharpens your skills as fine as the point needed to skimshaw a 1/2 cm bone handle. Ferit is Right, You'd then be able to do the concentric imploding picture for sure, or at least imagine you did...

I'll be back in the POD today...and tomorrow, and the day after...Maybe I'll get real good at scrimshaw!

Hi Lawrence!

Thanks for stopping by. With nice straight grained woods, you can get down to 1/16" thick without too much difficulty and if it's not a brittle wood, 1/32" thick is possible if you are very careful. When getting this thin, you need to be using a fine grit sanding sleeve and go with the direction of rotation. You would probably snap the wood going against rotation. You also need to take very light passes and keep the wood moving. Stopping to change hand positions could result in a rounded divot (snipe) and too heavy a pass (fence too close to sanding sleeve) can create a snipe at the ends or a sudden grab that could crack the wood. With light enough passes, I'm not sure how thin you could go but it's probably safer to use a hard sanding block once the wood feels too flimsy. Also, make sure your fence is square to the sanding sleeve. It really does work well. Hope that helps!

Hi John!

Glad I could provide inspiration. I hope you have as much fun with them as I have had. Heck, it should be 7 times as much fun!

I just started my new job today and am staying with my folks in Colorado Springs while my wife is back in Wichita until the house sells. My dry dock is in storage so I will be getting my build fixes vicariously through the logs of my MSW family. I have a lot of reading to catch up on!

Best Wishes,

-Buck

Yeah buck, definite inspiration for sure.  I can start working on the basic structure of 7 of these beasts and probably not be where you are yet whenever you get the chance to work on them.....lol.  Work....bummer.....tried to give that up a while back....sorry....retired....from work!   But it's necessary sometime to support these crazy things we call hobbies!

Hi Matti, That is my bike. It seems that I can hardly park it without Augie asking me to move it!

I've moved it to the other side of the Kissing Camels rock formation so Augie can't see me from his window. :) Here's a better look at the bike. It's a KTM 950 Supermoto.

Buck,

Enjoyed the pics! Brings back some very fond memories. I was stationed in the Springs from '74 to '80's. My duty station was the Cheyenne Mountain Complex and my base was Peterson AFB. Beautiful country. Views almost every where you look! Enjoy it all! A ride up Gold Camp Road was always a treat. I hope it hasn't changed too much!!

Hi Eddie,

My dad was Air Force and we moved to Colorado Springs in 1969. Back then it seemed like paradise to me! I think when you were here, Powers road was still a dirt road. It's now busier than Academy Blvd and there are houses stretching out beyond Peterson AFB now. The Garden of the Gods and Cheyenne Mountain Canyon are still amazing and beautiful places. Gold Camp Road and Rampart Range Road have been closed off at the Colorado Springs ends since I've been back. I'm guessing it has to do with the Waldo Canyon fire. I agree that traveling up Gold Camp Road is a special treat.

Best Wishes,

Hi Lawrence,

Sorry for any confusion. The last 2 pictures were taken at the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs in the state of Colorado. The state of Kansas has some beautiful places but nothing quite as spectacular as Colorado. There are some beautiful and serene areas in the Flint Hills of Kansas but it is a different kind of beauty. Maybe you could visit both places!

I have no timeline for when we will be able to buy a place in Colorado. It is contingent on us first selling the place in Kansas.

Thank you for the concerns. The NE part of Colorado Springs where I'm staying has been OK. One of the roads on the west side of town that I just rode by bike on last week was washed out. We had very heavy sustained rains which is unusual for here. Boulder, Colorado got hit the worst but I have heard from relatives down south in New Mexico that high water is about to flood their house. It was a very huge storm system.

Hi guys! I'm still here but on the sidelines with only an iPhone. The new job is going great, but otherwise I have been feeling adrift. My wife and our dogs are still in Kansas 'til the house sells and I feel I have no anchor. Not saying that my wife is an anchor :) but she does anchor me! I guess I should stop using nautical expressions.

Part of my moving here was to spend more time with my Dad who's health had been declining. I've been staying at his house. Sadly, Dad passed away while I was at my 2nd day at work. He was 93 and had lived a full life. I've been taking care of my step mom who was absolutely wonderful to my Dad. She's 76 and fortunately in good health.

I could really use the calming effect of some boat building time, but don't really have a space to work at and the majority of my tools are somewhere in storage. I do pull my whaleboat out of its box and look at it now and then. I have been house hunting and can't wait until my wife, our dogs and me can get back to a more normal life together.

Thanks for checking in on me. I really value your friendship and have been enjoying following your builds. Hope I haven't bummed you out.

Best wishes

-Buck

Ahoy Buck :D

"my condolences on your family's loss"  I am truly sorry to hear this news.

As for the building.

Might I suggest you get some reading material for your Wasa build. It is a very research heavy build you know. Perhaps you could start carving the figures.  This should prove to be a great distraction until you can get your family settled and start on this next chapter and your next build :P

God bless and God speed

Sorry to hear about your father. I lost my dad too a few years back and its a big sorrow on many levels. Ive been thinking a lot of your post.

It sounds like it might be good to look for those tools and have a go at building again. It could help sorting all feelings and get that sense of calm from building models.
