Phantom by Elijah - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:96 - New York Pilot Boat

Recommended Posts

Hi, Elijah,

Looking good, sir. You may want to look for the book by Gene Johnson on building ship models - he has a short section on shaping solid hulls.

I think Wayne's referring to Ship Model Building by Gene Johnson.

You can get it for $0.01 plus the price of shipping on Amazon or request it -- as I just did -- from your local public library.

Hello folks! I finished lining off the hull, at least if that is vertical lines. I found a problem with the building board, but that has been solved. It just means the starboard station lines are off by a little bit.

I also got a lot of styrene boarding. There are 5 boards of decent size.

I glued the paper hull templates to a board with some elders school glue.

I started cutting these templates out. I will give them a proper trim when I am done cutting them all.

Elijah

You are really moving ahead.  I just love the fact that you, as a young man, really stick to  the task before you and don't let any challenges bother you.  If you keep this attitude through life you will achieve anything you put your mind to.  Your Papa must be proud of you.  You are also getting a lot of followers of your build who have many years of ship building experience, and the fact that they are watching with interest and offering assistance shows how much they appreciate your enjoyment of the hobby.

Thanks for the compliments everybody! I really enjoy reading them. Mike, your farther than me! You've got your bulwarks done, and we both have planking to come. I'm going to go on a vacation for over a week on Thursday, but I may be able to finish my styrene templates before hand. I can also buy some wood filler today, so everything will be ready for hull shaping when I get back. If I finish my styrene templates Today I'll show some pictures. Happy modeling everyone!

Until next time.

Hi, Elijah!

Don't forget that when your baby brother gets bigger, he is going to start crawling and walking around. Make sure you have a safe place to store your model when it is finished and any other models and parts that you may have on hand when he gets to be of walking age!  Store your tools in a safe place, too!

I have finished cutting and trimming my frames :)! Now onto the slightly daunting task of shaping the hull…. I'm going to try to get some wood filler tomorrow before I leave for my vacation, and I hope I can do this hull justice! But first, a good dinner, and maybe some reviewing of research.

Elijah, you may want to add some insurance for the baby gate by storing tools in places the baby can't open. Same for your project. Stash in latched closets and cabinets. Should slow the wee one down. If those fail, may have to elevate things to the tops of cupboards and cabinets.

Have fun on your vacation, padawan.

Mike, I handled it by canoeing and visiting interesting items in the Smithsonian, including the gunboat Philadelphia. That one is now on my "to build" list ;).

Wayne, I visited Massanutten, near the blue ridge mountains and the Shenandoah valley. Being from Illinois, I'm not used to seeing mountains! Now, back to work :D.

I am currently in the process of shaping the starboard side, which is my first. I'm nervous because I don't currently have wood filler, and I can not fill areas needing filling. If you look, you can see I have a couple arrows pointing to big spots needing filling :D. I found out that my school has a wood shop, and I will try to take a look at it tomorrow. There is a lot of extra wood at the bow.

Your ship is looking great Elijah. Excellent work and good to see you taking your time and making sure that everything is coming along just right. You will be very happy with the results from doing that. A solid hull ship is a great learning kit. I just completed one myself a few months ago of the Bounty. I've pulled up a chair to watch you build your Phantom. I look forward to watching the progress and sharing this journey with you.

Elijah - one of our Golden Rules - never throw anything away. That even goes for sawdust you may generate from cutting and filing. I have several jars full of it.

I say this because a good filler can be made of white glue and sawdust. Mix to the consistency of soft clay, then you can press it into any gaps. If the gaps are thin, you can add a bit of water to your filler.  Allow to dry and then sand.

Maybe you can get some sawdust at the shop.

You are doing a good job Elijah.  One of the things about a solid hull is that you can see how the shape is coming along.  Remember just a little off at a time.

And a lot of patience.
