Ray reacted to Polux in HMS Diana 1794 by Ray - FINISHED - Caldercraft - A 38 gun Heavy Frigate
Hi Ray
Good to see you working again in a beautiful ship. Las I heard you were about to get a knee replacement, did you?
If so, how do you feel with it? I found the gallery for your Pegasus and I most say you did a fantastic job,it is a fine ship.
I just started mine a couple of weeks ago and I am loving it. Although for now I had to stop as I broke a hand and I can not do any work,
It is kind of frustrating but no choice other than patiently weight.
I just went through your log on the Diana and again you are doing great work. She looks beautiful.
It will be nice to follow your log again.
Best regards
Polo

The galleries have now been completed there is one more bit to add on the top but that will be done when the quarterdeck rails have been added, no real problems adding the trim and decoration and the photos show the stages, now back to the plating only a few more rows on the second side to go.
Decoration going on one side
That side done
Decoration going on the stern
Galleries finished

The main wale The main wale planking was done next; again the timber needed dressing before it could be used, as the edges were very rough. After all the planks were fixed I taped over the top thinner plank so as to protect it, and to maintain the difference when rubbing down the rest of the wale. The wale was rubbed down and filled and top plank uncovered and the whole wale painted black.
The whole of the hull including the wale was given a coat of 50/50 satin water based varnish and water, I use this as a sealer, I find both paint and the copper tiles adhere to it very well (I did a test strip to make sure).
First plank on
Ready to fill and paint
Narrow top wale plank
Wale in progress and lined gun ports
Masked up and painted
Wale completed and 50% water-varnish sealer on

The second planking is completed sanded, filled, and sanded again and lastly finished off with wire wool, I have also lined the gun ports with lids, all the gun ports have been painted. One thing I did do was to add a 1mm strip to the bottom of the keel as to my eyes the distance between the planking and the keel bottom looked to narrow.
Bow planking
Stern post and stealers

First sanding
Filler aplied
Lined gun ports
Extra wood added to allow easier lining of bow gun port

The side rails
I masked at the top of the waist side rail and at the bottom of the sheer rail and painted royal blue in-between I the added the rails, making sure to leave spaces for the channels and fenders, I decided to leave the rest of the rails until after the top deck goes on, and I have worked out the position quarterdeck bulwark at how high it will be.

Sheer rail going on
Gap for channel
Both rails on

The Lady Nelson
This is my finished Lady Nelson
Great fun to do, and a good relearning curve, having not built a model for many years, and I am well pleased with the end result. The kit I would I recommend it, 100% yes, great quality materials super plans and drawings, plenty of wood, both planking and dowel, cord as well, the only short fall some 3mm blocks and eyes but is there anything perfect. I can now open the box of my next model HMS Pegasus in earnest, not sure whether to do a build log for her?

The Gun Deck
The guns
I decided to try blackening the barrels rather than as in the previous builds painting them.
1st attempt I tried a blackening agent supplied by a well known model shop it was a complete failure after cleaning the test barrels I tried a 50/50 solution watched it and after 40 minutes nothing added the rest of the bottle and again after a further 30 nothing more than a slight discolouration.
2nd attempt this was with Birchwood Casey brass black, another failure, it did give a sort of blackening but it was very patchy and after washing it rubbed off.
At this point I gave up with the blackening, re-cleaned up the test barrels and went back to my previous method, I used a matt black aerosol spray and did 6 at a time giving them 5 or 6 very light coats and selected the very best ones for the guns that will be seen although there were no bad ones.
The carriages were made up using the jig as in the photo, painted and the rigging eyes, and rings added, I made them up in stages, and in-between working on them made up some of the deck fittings I find this a way of making the repetitious parts not tedious, I rigged the breech rope over the top to simulate it going through the cascable ring as shown in The Anatomy of Ships I fully rigged two guns and mounted them laying the breech rope as in the book, also this also allowed me to work out the position of the rope coils at the end of the tackle.
Now back to assembling and rigging the rest of the guns.
The axle jig
Ready for the wheels and barrels
Breech rope on

Bulwark rings

HMS Pegasus completed
Well Pegasus is finished, its been a three year build a bit longer that I anticipated, but we did move house during that time.
How did it all go, the quality of the kit was very good and I recommend it without any reservations. Looking back on the build there were no real problem in producing this fine model, for she really in a handsome ship. The most daunting part of the build was for me was undoubtedly the rigging, not the standing rigging but the running rigging, mainly because there is an awful lot of it, but in the end it was not that bad, the key to this I think was leaving access to the centre of the deck which made tying off the cordage ends ok, I will say one thing, I did use a fair bit more cordage than came with the kit.
The most difficult part of the build was probably coppering the hull, but it does look great when finished. I also think fully rigging the cannons and adding the rope coils were well worth the extra time and effort.
Final thoughts a great kit, makes up into a super model but not for the beginner, I hope this log helps other Pegasus/Fly builders.

If I was to do it again, I think I would plank the deck after gluing in place. I found that as I planked, the false deck took a concave curve. When first fit, this resulted in a ridge running down the centreline. It too a lot of clamping to knock that down, and in some hidden places, I've got a small gap where things didn't close up quite right.
The only expediency that I could see from planking first then installing, you can plank right over any openings, turn the thing over and cut them out from underneath.

I have finished painting the stripes. Masking over the different levels was rather a pain, but came out quite well with some minor touching up. The Tamiya tape is indispensable. The irregularities you see below the lowest stripe are below the 1mm timber 'boundary' and will be covered by the copper.
I will modify the stem so that it will enable the fitting of the figurehead. (See Arthur's (AEW) log.) Then there are a few mor bits and pieces to do before I start the coppering. I'm approaching that with some trepidation.
Here the roundhouse etc have been dry-fitted.

Once the dry fit was finished the bulkhead at the bow & stern were chamfered holding a length of planking across bulkheads to asses the amount required which right at the bow and stern is quite considerable, but this is the time to get it as good as possible, before they are glued on to the keel. The hard wood keel was glued to the ply one next, and when dry the chamfered bulkheads together with the false strengthening deck were glued together with PVA.
I did not use the plank termination parts other than the one between bulkhead one and the keel as my preferred method is two fill between the early front and the last couple of bulkheads with balsa and you don’t need both.
So the balsa filling between those bulkheads was done next and sanded as required a couple of bit chipped out of the balsa but this does not matter.
