thibaultron reacted to Justin P. in Secret Vessel "Morel" by Justin P. - FINISHED - Master Korabel - Scale 1:36
Planking is complete. Probably the one the most pleasurable experiences Ive had planking, of course there was not much one could screw up with this. No complicated curves or spiling. Beveling was required and after I gave it a go on a couple planks with a file and sanding stick, I gave that up completely and just used a small luthiers plane (or thumb plane).
Here is the shot of the final plank going in:
After a solid hour of sanding, checking, sanding some more and then sanding a whole lot more it got nice and smooth. Unfortunately the gaps became much more pronounced. So I swept up all the new dust I created, whipped up a nice paste with some Elmers glue (my favorite for this task), and used a small putty knife to fill. That was another hour of fill and wipe, fill and wipe. Let dry, fill and wipe some more. All in all, it turned out pretty well Im happy with the result. As always, Im tempted to give it another go and build this kit again sometime just to see if I can do better, but Ill finish it before I go there.
A quick layer of wipe-on poly just to reward myself and below is the semi-complete product. I think I may take a day away from it, and come back with fresh eyes to see if it needs any more sanding/filling before moving on.
For what's it worth, the total planking period probably has about 8+ hours time into it.

This just keeps getting better and better I don't know how you can keep topping yourself. But I am sure you will find a way. Keep up the great work.

Given the level of detail you are adding, including the actual food is almost a must.....

Is the empty room next to the head some kind of storage room, or something else? Fantastic build, I am loving every installment.

I remember a few kits like that.......in fact I started to play with one last night....1960 Chevy Belair Impala.........has those white wall inserts. you know.......there are aftermarket tires {AMT} sold as a accessory pack. perhaps you can look into this and find a suitable set.
my dad had a '63 { I think} caddy fleetwood four door. it had a button on the floor that one could change the radio station great when you wanted to play a prank on someone

I'm in, too. Yep, the ole Cadillacs had wide whitewalls. One of my neighbors growing up had a '53 with the whitewalls and rudimentary tail fins.

Thanks for those links, Lou. Look closely at the photos and you will see the rings are not a flat ring. Price is not too bad on either of those kits.

Negative. They are not a flat ring of plastic. I have another JoHan kit of a classic Mercedes and assuming the inserts are the same for both kits, they are definitely not a simple flat ring. I should be able to use the Mercedes insert to cast a mold then make a new set of four, so that is some consolation.

thibaultron reacted to Egilman in 1931 Cadillac by CDW - FINISHED - JoHan - 1:25 Scale - PLASTIC
You can easily make them with a bit of trial and error, it is just a flat ring of plastic with a slot taken out of it so they will cone shape to fit the tire.... might take a couple of tries to get it right but it's not hard...

I'm in!! Hope you can get around the little problem. Looking forward to this!!

Hope you are able to find the whitewalls. I think I built some of those kits as a kid as well. Weren't the whitewalls just white plastic inserts that snapped into a groove in the tire? If so you think you could make new ones from Plastistrut sheet using a compass.
Another somewhat more expensive option is:

But you could also try to make an offer.
At any rate I can hardly wait until I see what you are able to make from this

Fiddlesticks!
I was just going through the kit contents and realized the whitewall inserts are missing. Will have to rob them from another kit because you can't get by without them. This really hacks me off right now.

I built one of these as a gift for my father-in-law about 30 years ago.... If memory serves they built into wonderful representations with few real defects...
A real blast from the past.....
Sitting in on this one....

Very realistic. An awesome job on the details Yves. Along with everything else, the magazines and pictures on the walls add so much realism to the room.

Module is almost completed. A few more details, the ceiling/pressure hull and it will be over. In the meantime, enjoy some shots:
The fuel tank (below) surrounding the batteries room:
The sleeping quarter, also used for eating and relaxing (as far as you can relax inside a submarine):
Galley, pantry and toilet room:
Lots of magazines (propaganda) and Nazis ideology posters on the walls:
Magazines are made of a cover printed at scale and glued on a thin cardboard sheet. All covers are authentic Kriegsmarine and Adler publications from the early 40's.
Girls are the Olympic champions of 1936, held in Berlin.
Aerial view of the galley:
I still have to solder some electrical wires, glue the ceiling and fill up the tank. Some painting on the outside and the main air hose to be added on top of the pressure hull, and the module will be ready to rest in the hull.

That is Trumpeter choice and reasoning. As someone mentioned it before, I suspect that these independent modules were designed by different groups and ended up with a different level of quality and details.
I thought about it. The hard part is to find the perishables..... actually, I have a lot in my fridge right now 🙂 Honestly, I have a trail and need to order a couple of things.

Really outstanding. It's unfortunate that a larger deck piece is not available but that's just minor.
Thanks for sharing a very informative log.

Congratulations on your models progress and on your obvious skills as a parent. It is so nice when in spite of our best efforts our kids still turn out great.

I think I leave it as is looks fine just like it sits. The process of staining the the deck any is going to lead back to the plane to give the whole picture harmony. Kevin
