ChrisLBren got a reaction from GrandpaPhil in Bismarck by ChrisLBren - FINISHED - Agora - 1/200 Scale
This will be one long beast - already 12 inches long at the first turret. Next I need to wire the electonrics on the front turret. I am not going to sweat the small paint chipping - no one will notice as she grows. Notice I have to use a paint bottle to hold down the deck because of all of the motors mounted in the rear until I permantently install it.

The fun continues ! Next stages are mostly concerned with gears and motors to work foremost turret - "Anton" and the anchors. Shes going to be large and heavy. A little bit bummed about some metal showing where the hull parts are screwed together - I could always use some weather powders or touch ups if needed.

ChrisLBren got a reaction from thibaultron in Question for Jim Bryne's Saw Owners and Preac Saw Owners
You are right ! I do have the carbide blade that came with the Jim Saw and it cuts 3/4 like butter! For my 74 build - the largest dimension in the plans is 3/8 thick @ 1/48 scale - which is what I was referring to not the saws capabilities.
Thanks for the heads up on Thurston - talk about quick turn around - I ordered the blades Tues and they arrived Friday

This is a FUN build - here are the results of the first 8 installments. Each chapter is maybe 30 minutes a piece work time which works great for me and the family. The turret works electronically, the bow is solid metal and very heavy and here are my tools (much different than a wooden ship build) - God Hands - they cut plastic parts perfectly off the sprue, tweezers, screwdrivers and CA. I have 9-18 next - more electronics and a growing hull. Ill be back at my wooden ships later but for now a nice diversion - and have pretty much taken over for my son on this one for now. Im teaching him model building on some Airfix 1/72 airplanes which are disposable.

ChrisLBren got a reaction from Roger Pellett in Bismarck by ChrisLBren - FINISHED - Agora - 1/200 Scale
Update ! Unlike wood ship models - working with multi media is more like a jigsaw puzzle - very relaxing and easy. Here's the results of the first three packs, forward deck, first of four Arado plans and the "Anton" turret. I need to install the motor/electronics in the "Anton" forward gun turret next.
Agora is terrific as far as customer service - if you damage or break a part they will send you a replacement ASAP. The metal hull parts are terrific - she will be almost 4 feet long when completed.

ChrisLBren reacted to mtaylor in La Belle Poule 1765 by mtaylor - Scale 1:64 - POB - French Frigate from ANCRE plans
Michael,
I'm using a small bit of white glue to hold it in place on a piece of basswood. Soaking in alcohol removes the piece from the basswood when I'm done. Here's some photos of what I'm currently working on.... the birds and leaves and also the Arms of France. The blanks are 3/32" boxwood for these. The "little angel" was 1/8" as was the first one I did. The etching is done with a very low power pass at "high" speed so it's not very deep. I do etch extras as I'm a bit of klutz at times by either ruining the carving via a mistake or dropping it on the floor never to be seen again. As a side note, I may have to simplify the Arms of France even more than I already have, but we'll see.
Edit: Rats... I'll have to redo the Arms of France. Seems a cut a bit of the helmet plume. For now, I'll use this one a test to see what needs to be simplified.

Here's the next carving. Tiny little guy (angel or maybe it's a cherub) who's supposed to be holding a small banner with the ship's name on it. Looks a lot better in person than he does on camera, IMO. This is the keeper... number 5 out of 8 tries. Coming up are the birds (ravens?) and acanthus branches (I think they are...) more tiny little carvings. Meantime, planking is continuing along with chasing/following around the doctors on my bad heart valve.

ChrisLBren reacted to Old Collingwood in HMS Hood by Old Collingwood - Flyhawk - 1/700 - PLASTIC - After her explosion.
Well I have given in to temptation and brought this little bad boy, I will build her (when / after I have finished my Waterloo Dio) in her Battle of the Denmark Straits set up, that as we know during her battle with Bismark led to her catastrophic loss when her magazine blew up.
The last time I built a model of Hood was the old 1/600 Airfix kit back in the 70's so I am full of excitement to build this one.
These are the screen shots from the Flyhawks advert.
