Poor quality materials and poor instructions/plans often risk first timers remaining first timers. In the 1980's I brought the AL Endeavor that completely baffled me and it ended up in the rubbish bin. I've had another go in the modern era and I am now thoroughly enjoying this hobby that I originally thought was beyond me. regards Malcolm

Great topic, marvelous potential Victory. In my opinion it would be a real shame if this first class design has the quality of its materials compromised by Amati driving the price as low as possible to compete with Caldercraft's Victory. The marketing/business side of kit manufacturing is very interesting. I know little about it. However, my assumption, based on my own limited experiences and reading many of the forums here, is that most of the time quality will trump price. Malcolm

fantastic build and log, thanks for sharing. I have this kit on the shelf and your efforts are both inspirational and a little bit intimating. Well done and lots of help for the novice. Malcolm

Interesting discussion about decals. In my experience decals require very specific techniques, including correct preparation of the surface, and various chemicals to obtain really good results; and that is on plastic/styrene. I don't know how decals would behave on wood. Larger decals can increase the difficulty in my experience, and the potential for error. Chuck is spot on, poorly applied decals look awful and are the first thing the eye will focus on. I think that paper, card, PE, others metals, resin, plastic and decals can all have a place enhancing wooden scale models. It will be very interesting to see what Chris eventually decides. Malcolm

Congratulations Chris on your second kit. What a fantastic and exciting time in this hobby with your entry into kit manufacture. I plan to purchase another kit from you , but have to keep my powder dry & wait to see what exciting larger ships come on stream next year. Very much looking forward to what is next. regards Malcolm

Ordered the Alert today despite having the Amati Revenge on the shelf, a 3/4 built Caldercraft Mars on the work bench (and the artesania latina Endeavor in the bin) but felt support of Chris and his efforts was something I'd like to be part of. I'll state publicly that I will complete the Alert. It looks a little beauty. Malcolm

Excellent answer from Chris as to kit quality and he makes some great points. He's the expert after all. Very encouraging as expectations will be very high of this Victory. Might the quality debate be a situation where 80% quality is good enough and to reach close to 100% quality might cost 80% more? Does that make sense? Particularly good news about the cannon's. A fantastic kit, it will be very interesting to see how Amati approach the quality of the components and materials. This forum records considerable debate, criticism and disappointment of poorer quality components concerning a range of manufactures. Of course top quality means a top price. I for one would prefer to pay more for the best possible components for this kit of a lifetime. Wondering what others think about component and material quality versus price. for this Victory. For Beginners -- A Cautionary Tale
Malcolm Greig replied to ccoyle's topic in New member Introductions
In 1987 I brought Artesania Latina's Endeavour. It was well beyond my ability and knowledge. No internet to help back then of course. It ended up in the parts bin one third poorly built. 25 yrs later I started Caldercraft's Mars. Nice kit. I'm rigging it at the moment. With this forum's resources I've had no problems I could not solve or fix. I'll finish it. My ambition is to build Chris Watton's Victory (if it is ever released), as a retirement project. But I know I'll have to get a few builds under my belt before I buy a kit like that. I support the moderator's advice. If I had started with a smaller less complicated build in 1987 I may have had a house full of finished model ships by now. Anyway that's my view. I'm pleased to have returned to the hobby.. I'll post a picture when the Mars is finished. I think I'm just too slow at present with working full time to do a build log justice. Malcolm -
Rigging my first build. Slow and huge learning curve. But every block and tackle completed is a good feeling. Malcolm
