  1. As a slower builder I est 1000 hrs for the Sphinx for me. That works out to about 65 p an hour of modelling enjoyment. That's now I rationalise cost. Shipping costs to the bottom of the world, that does hurt!! Fishing boats look very tempting. Happy modelling regards Malcolm
  2. Wow, Chris's website shows the 1st run of the Sphinx is sold out. Must be some sort of record. Congratulations to Chris and James. Long may the Vanguard line prosper. Malcolm
  3. Just read the fantastic Sphinx instruction download book, and looking forward to the kits delivery. I wonder what 'big' project Chris will tackle next? Whatever it is I will be very much looking forward to following its development. Malcolm
  4. Good work, welcome to the shipbuilding hobby. If you are considering a second build and would like detailed high quality instructions with plenty of photo's I would recommend you check out Amati Victory line and Vanguard kits. Both designed by Chris Watton, a member of this forum and owner of the Vanguard line. He also designed many of the Caldercraft's static model kits. regards Malcolm
  5. Glen Great build, and very interesting subject. You asked earlier in your log about kit manufactures. I am of the opinion that anything from Syren Models, Vanguard or Amati Victory line of kits are fantastic quality. And I have read that many other members agree. regards Malcolm
  6. Wow, a 1000 photo's. Fantastic. Estimated average time for this build (an hour per photo perhaps???). A lot of fun to be had with this model. Malcolm
  7. Good discussion on ship kit building philosophy. In 1988 I brought the AL Endeavour. I made a complete bundle of it and it ended up in the bin. 2005 I brought the Caldercraft Mars. My luck was in as unbeknown to me Chris designed that one. It's completed and I how am fully committed and enjoying the ship kit building hobby. All my kits are Chris Watton designed. regards Malcolm
  8. I'm looking forward to your build. A huge task. It will be very interesting to follow along. regards Malcolm
  9. David I'll be following along. I'll be very interested on how you approach your hull planking. I have the DOK on the shelf waiting for a start date. I certainly agree that it's a top quality kit. regards Malcolm
  10. Congratulations. I couldn't imagine how difficult it was working two full time jobs. We are in the golden age of model ship kits, thanks to Chris & Jim.
  11. Oh dear, I may have to purchase another Vanguard kit. Great build. Fantastic details and quality. Malcolm
  12. Just came across your build log Rusty. Very impressive build. Great discussion about "future" floor polish. Sure looks an easier less messy option than CA. regards Malcolm
  13. Fantastic update. There's been some interesting comments about rope. Amati rope has been supplied with a couple of kits I have and seems OK to me. But I'm no expert. Some of you don't seem that enthusiastic about it. How good or bad is Amati rope? or is it that Chuck's rope was a "Rolls Royce" type standard. Malcolm
  14. Excellent update, very professional modelling of a marvelous design. Very much enjoying the build log and looking forward to future postings. Malcolm
  15. Well done Lou, I guess the grind will continue for a while. I'll look forward to your progress updates. regards Malcolm
  16. Lou, excellent craftsmanship. Looks real good. regards Malcolm
  17. Good to see you up and running again. I have just finished viewing Chucks dry heat planking videos myself. How much time and energy do you put into "lining off" prior to planking? regards Malcolm
  18. ccoyle mentions the Caldercraft Mars. I brought it in 2005 and after much stopping and starting have only a few hours work to finish it. I wonder if Chris designed this brig? It was a pretty straight forward build for a novice. An old school modeler Keith Julier favorably reviewed it and that's why I brought it. Looking forward to building Chris's Alert next and then I'll contemplate my next purchase. Not sure about which kit but certain it will be from Vanguard. regards Malcolm
  19. It maybe that Chris's Amati Victory design and Chris's Vanguard's Royal George are heading toward a two or three year release date. That would be a great head to head battle. I suspect not to many folk could buy or build both??? Chris is an expert now, he'll be a super expert in a few years time. I think the Royal George is a fantastic flagship and a build to aspire to. Malcolm
