jwvolz reacted to Lt. Biggles in HMS Prince of Wales by Lt. Biggles - FINISHED - Tamiya - 1/350 - PLASTIC - Pontos detail up set - first ship build
Base coat on the hull is done. No washes, effects or weathering yet just a plain canvas. From a few test I’ve done I found it super easy to get carried away with weathering and over do it, so will try my hardest to not do that! One way to find out though!!

I agree Joe, and Gunship Grey is very close to brand new Panzer Grey maybe a quarter shade on the dark side.

Given those paint choices, if you are going to hand brush use Model Masters. I love Vallejo's "Air" line for the airbrush, but the regular stuff just doesn't brush as nicely as MM.

Nice work on the deck. Joggling looks good.

Thanks for the tip Dan. I bought some of the JB epoxy and used it.

Yes, I am short one preventer plate. It could be anywhere! I'll have to make a new one.

The Dragon armor kits are very nice.
The color you want is German Panzer Grey. Most paint lines have it including Vallejo in the Air line. It faded as it aged, so it will depend upon how weathered you'd like it to be.

Very nice work so far Ken.
What woods did you use for your planking?

Used to have it in the Model Masters line also, until the model shops stopped selling it, Dunklegrau, RAL 7021 is another one that works just as well. And your right, depending on where it was painted and how long it was out in the elements there are almost a dozen different variations of what is called "Panzer Grey"

I sanded down inside of the bulkheads and cut the ends so the hull looks more like a boat. I made a cradle for the boat, although I need to get a wider piece of wood for the base when my arts store is able to open. I decided to have a “false” deck. To do that, I first zeroxed my deck plan and I glued it to two 1/16 inch sheets of wood.
I sanded the two pieces down so they fit the deck pretty good. I want to remove the green paper, but I need to map out where everything will be placed before I glue the “false deck” to the bulkheads. I’ve also got to get the warp out of the wood and get the bend so it sits down without pressure. Then I’ll plank the bulwarks and paint them red.

Hull planking is complete. I added a molding to cover some problems where the hull planks meet the counter. I used a plain molding since the Providence was a converted merchant boat without much decoration. Next, I’m going to add another plank above the wales to ensure the cap rail will pass over the bowsprint.

The starboard side of the hull has been planked. It looks better than my last model, so I’m making progress. The trick is to properly bend the planks. On the aft part of the hull, two edge bends and one normal bend is required. That makes for a weird looking plank.
And this plank will still need some adjustments. Photos are attached and you can see some places where I didn’t do enough adjusting. A lot of patience is required.

jwvolz reacted to Gahm in US Brig Syren by Gahm - Model Shipways
And here is my final version of the jolly boat. It was built pretty much the same way as its pear wood predecessor. The major difference is the choice of wood: the planking and floor was built out of bass wood to match the color scheme of the Syren, the framing, seats, oar locks, and knees consist of box wood. Unfortunately as Chuck’s Syren shop did no longer sell box wood I had to mill the necessary boxwood strips (1/32”x1/32” and smaller) on my own. Images 1 and 2 show the framing and planking, the construction of the floor and the mounting of the breast hook. The straight edges of the seats were “premilled” (img 3) before I cut out the seats with a hack saw. Curved edges were done with a metal profile (img 4 shows the making of such a profile) or by cutting out the curved part, reducing it in size a little bit and tracing it (img 5). In images 6 and 7 the construction of the gratings and the milling of the needed parts can be seen. Image 8 depicts the making of the oar locks and the boat hook. And the last 2 images show the finished boat with oars, rudder, and boat hook.

jwvolz got a reaction from Elia in Benjamin W Latham by jwvolz - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:48
Deck has been planked (including windlass pads and thick pads at the masts) and painted. I masked from templates I made copying the plans and airbrushed the white. The areas that I stained should be gray, based on the instructions, but I didn't like how much of the plank detail disappeared under the white paint, so I elected to just stain it a weathered color.

jwvolz got a reaction from Elia in Benjamin W Latham by jwvolz - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:48
I've finished cleaning up and repainting the chainplates. . I also painted the decorative element around the hawse hole. A nice 20/0 brush and a careful hand got it looking good. This wasn't the first attempt, but re-doing acrylics is easy. The really hard part was getting both sides to look the same doing this free hand.

jwvolz got a reaction from Cabbie in Benjamin W Latham by jwvolz - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:48
I worked on the chainplates last couple of days. I made the strop rings by creating a small jig to bend brass wire around, forming a loop on each, which were then cut and soldered closed. The chainplates were made from sheet brass, with a loop soldered in the top. I used some brass nails cut to simulate to bolts to attach the strop to the chainplate, and once painted it all looks reasonably good.

I'm currently working on some plastic models as well as the Latham, so things aren't proceeding as rapidly at the moment. I did get the cap rails installed and the hull painted. Hull was painted with the airbrush. I was going to scribe the cove as per prototype, but tests showed that was not going to work very well in the basswood so I decided to just paint it on, which turned out much better.
I used water slide decals from Microscale for the name. I couldn't find gold in the font/scale I wanted so had to use white.

Hi - finally got the rudder coppered & hinges on & painted accordingly. Hard to tell from the pictures, but it was tapered at the back edge & toward the bottom. It is removable,so I will set it aside & move on to another area. Thanks for looking!

Every Model Shipways kit I've built has had very tight fitting bulkheads, so nothing unusual there. Good work so far.
