Chuck Seiler got a reaction from Rushdie in New to ship modelling? But what do you build first?
I wonder how many people take advice like this, versus they have to touch the hot stove before they listen.  (ouch, that IS hot!!!)  I have spoken on this topic often, so it is close to my heart.  I usually see "Yeah, I hear you, but that doesn't apply to me."  Far be it from me to judge.  An old friend of mine built a fully rigged, quite detailed miniature of HMS VICTORY as his second model.  For some it DOESN't apply to them.  Most it does.

I hope that those who disregard this and get the complicated model, only to 'touch the stove' don't get discouraged.  Instead, I hope they have the wisdom to set that project aside and get a simple starter kit to learn on.

OTHER WORDS OF WISDOM FOR NEWBIES:
    1.  You can never have too many clamps.
    2.  Alcohol is your friend.  It helps you unglue previously screwed up glued up parts so you can try again.  (Including ALL the planking from one model...just saying.)
    3.  Magnification and light are also your friends.
    4.  If you get frustrated or tired, set it aside and come back to it later.
    5.  READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  4. Thanks!

    Steve,

Greetings from Santee.    For more face to face interaction, I will refer you to the San Diego Ship Modelers Guild.  We are an NRG charter club whose info can be found on the main NRG site.  We meet on the ferry BERKELEY (Maritime Museum of San Diego) the second Tuesday of each month (today).  If interested, please IM me.

I regularly direct SDSMG members to MSW.  I rarely get the chance to send folks in the other direction.

The most glaring issues for a 2015 build were the Island changes and the new radar tower when she was refitted/refueled.  I scratch built a new radar tower out of Evergreen sheet and strip stock.  I marked out issues with the island in blue sharpie for rework/modification.  (The radar domes are desiccant balls from shipping packages, chosen for their particular size.)

I then proceeded to modify the island as necessary with Evergreen stock.

I enjoy building models of many types, but U.S. Navy ships and planes are a passion.  Plastic car and truck kits are fun, but historical models require an attempt at period accuracy, at least from my perspective.  I have been surfing modelshipworld.com this month and have learned quite a bit already from the membership.
My impetus for joining is the Constructo Prince de Neufchatel in 1:58 scale, which has been in my shipyard for over 20 years at this point.  She is my first wooden ship model and I have just started making progress on her again.  Also in drydock are a couple of 1/700 plastic kits (USS Belleau Wood, LHA 3 and a “modern” USS Missouri, BB 63).

I built as a kid and enjoyed imagining myself Captain of the project of the week.  As an adult I try to capture the historical feel of the ship and always learn a great deal researching my builds.  I really only have two finished ship models (both plastic) at this point – Revell’s 1/535 scale Missouri in Measure 22 camouflage, and Italeri’s 1/720 CVN 71 Roosevelt.

I look forward to spending time with you folks, learning new things, and finishing better models.
    Especially the Neufchatel!!

Well, I have to follow the sage wisdom of Clint Eastwood... "A man's got to know his limitations".  After being in denial for a couple of weeks, I'm accepting that as a reality.  The eight small cleats at the rear of the quarterdeck are  beyond me at this point.  Tiny little critters and I've gone to serious magnification and also ran through all my tools on hand for working with them.  Even spent time at the local hobbyshop looking for the right tools.  Just too tiny for me.

So... I'll leave the holes for them for now.  Maybe in a week or two, I'll have some inspiration on how to manipulate them or worst case... fill the holes and paint.

Time to turn the page and carry on.

Looking forward to finding out more about this one. It's been dated to 1242-1265 - a little before my Winchelsea nef. I'll be interested to see how much of the hull they have recovered, and what it tells us about British ships of this period.

Finally I have a little update about Eagle.  Feels good to be making sawdust again. I have had to remake part of the stem of Eagle. Should have left the original alone, sigh. Also am starting to tackle making some of the bow and hawse timers for Eagle, been doing a lot of research on here about how you guys make these pieces.  I didn't take any new pictures of this part but am also making some more stern timbers.

Are you sure you don't mean 1/64 scale? MS1447 is Model Shipways' 1/64 scale Bluenose kit. If that's the case, they have the instruction manual posted online here, or you can contact the company for a hard copy.

Hi Dave, might be asking the never ending, forever opinionated answers question. I have used absolute crap rope that came with a kit and some of the best aftermarket scale rope you can get. The good stuff needs nothing. That’s all I can say from my experience rigging my first ship. If you have quality scale rope, it is virtually ready to go to work. I’ve learned a lot from reading build logs and asking questions. I feel safe saying there is no one rule for preparing rope for rigging.

From the Manx Museum. The modeler is making a local type of boat for exhibition. Seeing this makes me feel like all my tools are under-used.
Note the use of an upended bench to support the end of the model.

A good build log is great.  It can provide a wealth of information.  Very often it tells us the result but not the process.  Your videos are fantastic because they show us not only what you did but how you did it.  I encourage everybody to check out your various videos.  Even if they are not making the ship you are working on, the processes are the same.

My store https://ropesofscale.com/ has light beige and Tan Rope. 1mm or .8mm would work for that Dory. If you buy one bag from me the shipping is cheap as I can send it by a stamped envelope. That is until the post service catch on that I'm doing that 😁

This is so true...One must also take into consideration the type of line you are using...cotton or nylon, coupled with the direction you are reeving the lanyards in the deadeyes.  I've been able to control twisting by these simple tricks.
