Rigging has begun. The first step (while I was making up the spars) was to assemble, and learn how to use, Chuck's Servomatic serving machine. Assembly was straightforward, but my learning was not. I had never served line before and through no fault of the machine, my own stupidity and clumsiness provided an obstacle. Once I overcame those, the machine works great and I'm now serving away with ease.

Of course, the first line done, the bobstay, is served for it's full length. The bobstay and the the bowsprit guys, the other lines I've done, also employed Chuck's 4mm hooks. These were another first for me and a product that I highly recommend. I've always enjoyed rigging, and I'm happy to be at it again.

Next up will be the burton pendants and then the shrouds.

    Hi Denis

Love those windows and the Q-Tips sound like a great idea.

Jingle Bells is coming along nicely... I still don't know how you can juggle so many builds at the same time. I struggle with just one!

    All the best.

    Hello Mike,
Sapele (sa pee le) is a member of the mahagony family. It is grown commercially in Western
Africa. It can grow to 60 feet tall before any limbs branch out, so it is knot-free. I just built a table out of it for myPhiladelphia

Well, darn it. I'll just have to drink beer on St Patty's Day now that cabbage is in short supply. Or maybe a good Irish whiskey.

Working drawing in AI with C-plans 1:1 at background, and measurement for pin rails .... huh ...

It seems they have to be a bit enlarged ... more testing, visual this time, has to be done

BTW, you can see comparing to photo in post #2870 that "pillars" are a bit higher than on C-plans, so ... here is a space for enlarging : Pillars to 10-11mm, longitude of rail to 20mm and width to 3mm, width of pillars at base to 3-4mm ... we will see ...

Thanks George. Just thinking ... Visually, pin rails are very attractive part as deck end of rigging lines, and in my scale (app1:100) they are really really small. If I had any idea about that, probably I'll chose 1:75 or even 1:50. But then, She would be 1,25 or 1,5 meters long! With glass cage, min 0,3m longer! Too large for living room. On 1:100 scale, She is almost at the very end of size for my living room (4,5x5,5m). Hmmmmm

BBQ strips have exactly same diameter as my "Einhell" rotary tools, so ... at slow speed, short pieces, sandpaper and "exacto", playing until I catch line of moves, and that is it. Not bad for this scale. Basement is made from two glued square 4x2mm strips, drilled through to dia of toothpick,Ca glue, veneer down, so here it is. When I start making final, I'll show whole process. I found BBQ stuff more stronger than another wooden pieces I have. They can not be fine fine fine sanded without putty, because of their longitudinal "bamboo" structure, but in this scale, it just can not been seen

Bollards have bigger dia, and I made them without rotary tool. They are small and will be hidden under ropes etc, and it just does not matter. Thx for following and support, Mark

BTW, yes, spice is all around, and it flows ! My social life comes back, little moves forward in job also, kids are well and I enjoy in their success and moving forward in life, and almost everything seems to be ok. (OK, as every attorney, I am good in lies ... Admiral still miss me very much, but it seems I started to learn to live with it)

Thx friend for nice words. Unfortunately, I don't like field of crime law attorney practice, in the way it works in my country. Far away from real defense job, judge and prosecutor both at same side against your client and you ... and thin evidences and logic just mean - nothing. But "trade" and fear mean - everything. There is no place for you there if you are honest, ethic, and full professional type of attorney. I do not like to work in this field, so I turned myself to corporate, labour, sport and civil law field 32 years ago

Thanks John, Ken, George and druxey,

Yes druxey, I'm more confident now that we have four boilers. I've seen so many references to Western river steamboats having two or three boilers but then we found sources pointing to early riverboats having four or five boilers. We've recently discovered that on the earlier vessels, single flue boilers were common but not very efficient. By the end of the 1830s, two flue boilers were becoming the norm. The increased efficiency allowed fewer boilers. I think most references to boilers are from the 1840s and later and don't consider the single flue boilers. Adam Kane's thesis on steamboat machinery includes an interesting table in the appendix that gives the engine and boiler specifications for several early steamers. It is interesting because instead of referring to number of boilers, it refers to number of flues. Although there is some difference in the size of the flues, four boilers with one flue each produces about the same volume of steam as two boilers with two flues each. Kevin has put together a list of several early riverboats that he has researched in government documents and it appears that most of the early boats had four boilers or more. Finally, the most convincing piece of evidence is the contract for the Yellowstone. A single centerline engine identical in size to Heroine's, similar sized flywheel and stroke and from the same period. The contract calls for four boilers 36 inches in diameter and 16 feet long. We know heroine's boilers were 34 inches in diameter and the sixteen foot length fits perfectly between two sets of doubled deck beams. I was really at a loss before but I feel pretty sure that we have it right now.

Ken. I think you will find that the decision whether or not to include the red-stripe basically comes down to dating your build to a specific time-frame.

It would appear that, at various stages of her illustrious career, there has been a white gun-port stripe, a yellow gun-port stripe, as well as the red dressing belt stripe. Most likely, other variations and combinations were used at different times and by different commanders. After all, she was a war-ship, and subterfuge is all a part of the Art of War.

See USS Constitution Yellow Hull Stripe here for the discussion on this matter.

Incidentally, that is a brilliant practicum on copper-plating and I am certain it will prove very, very useful to many Connie builders in the future.

hahahahahaha, Heck I live here and this is the first I'm hearing of that BIG CABBAGE shortage. I didn't know we grew that much cabbage. I'm going to have to check into this I might need to stock pile some and jump the price up .  Thanks guys, I'm going to start laying a few of those reddish planks and see how the contrast will be.

On a side note, Mount Dora made our newspaper's front page today.  Big cabbage shortage being predicted due to the weather down there!  Evidently Mount Dora is a cabbage mecca.  Could be the beginning of a world crisis, not enough or outrageously priced cabbage to go with your corned beef on St. Patrick's Day!
