    Hi Nils

Looking good. Can I ask where you got the really nifty stern decorations from? Or, did you make them?

Deck's looking really nice, too, by the way!

    Cheers

    a little update.....

now need to plank and mount the forecastle deck and the long promenade deck, before the most upper hull rails are mounted to the sides. Before this the metal plating can not start

Am also making thoughts of the stern decoration and ornaments, and been gathering what I feel may suit this job....
Also am meantime thinking of how to do the 3 different types of lifeboats in repeatable way of production (probably resin cast from prototypes and master moulds)

    Nils

front waist deck is permanently glued on, small centering hole for frontmast is set and bulkhead for step to promenade deck is dry fitted

traffic corridor port to stb on aft waist, deckstripes permanently fitted, raw bulkhead piece for step to poop deck dry fitted and inner bulwarks painted white and mahagoni handrails put on

the handscetch helps to get overview of the elevation dimensions ( slight changes to suit the requirements pending...)

these hull rails go on when the forecastle. and promenade deck are planked and put on. Before that the metal-plating of the hull can not start

some of the decoration and ornaments intended to use, especially for the stern

Ed.....your doing a fantastic job on this build of the YA.  I just want to let you know you are a super encourager and motivator for the skilled model making minded individual. Only one other example that I have found can equal or at least be near to your superb vessel is this fine reproduction.

I thought I'd post this pic so as to demonstrate the near exactness to your own model.

    Amazing....both..no..all three are amazing.

    Part 16 – Garboard Strake

The planking of the lower hull begins at the keel with the installation of the garboard strake, heavy (7” X 18”) members, bolted through the deadwood and edge bolted into the keel.  At the ends of the ship the garboard strake is expanded into two strakes to begin the upward sheer of the bottom planking and to further strengthen to narrow deadwood at these points.

In the first picture the aft section of the garboard has been fitted against the post and is being marked for the insertion of the second strake “stealer”.

In the next picture the strake was cut to receive the second section and is being held in place to check the final fit..

This strake members were then glued in place as shown below and over the entire length of the hull with a similar joint for a second strake at the bow.

Because this strake twists to fay against the curving hull, a lot of clamps were needed.  The next picture shows the aft section after the piece of second strake was installed.

I did not use dark glue for any of the hull planking since the intention is to paint and sheath the hull later.  Hard maple was used for all of this planking.

The last picture shows the forward part of the garboard, with the joint lines emphasized on the image to show the configuration.

In this picture, it can be seen that the line of the rabbet runs just aft of the joint line between the stem and false stem.

Note that in the last two pictures the garboard thins down to match the depth of the rabbet in the stem and sternpost.  The garboard was, of course, installed on both sides of the hull at this stage.  Since it is intended to sheath this lower hull, I did not install any of the bolts, as I would have done on the fully framed version – if I had installed the garboard on that model.

Above the garboard, the planking thickness drops to 4”.  The beginning of that work will be shown in the next part.

Finally an update from the Flying Dutchman.  I have been busy with domestic chores, some cooking for my wife and other sundry items.  However, I have been able to spend a few hours on and off at the workbench in between.   Some of the work was the same as previously posted thus it made so sense to clutter up the log with same stuff.

I have now completed the conversion of all the canons on the main deck waste area.  I still need to make the tackle hardware for them as well as the tackle.  Plenty of single and double pulleys, hooks and eye bolts.

To have a change of pace i started with the starboard side gun deck gun ports.  I made a bunch a few years ago but several are too small for the gun ports so I have to make about 6 new ons and that includes the two at the stern.
I also have to remake the associated hardware - - - hinges!  The previously made hinges are too large in scale - - -  I used 1 mm brass tube for the hinges.  I obtained 1/2 mm brass tubes from Holland via Remco, that'll be mucho better.  That means that I also have to redo all the gunport hinges on the port side   Hey, what's another redo among friends

Okay, here are a few pics.

Five of the boats should look something like this at this point. The next steps will be adding the details to each of the boats. I will work on one boat at a time to add the rest of the details. Each boat is a model in itself and will get a lot of attention. these are the boats that will be attached to the ship on the boat bearers and davits. I will post pictures as I progress, however, it might be some time inbetween the photos since quite a bit of work will need to be done to accomplish a finished boat. Please be patient. I have been fortunate to be able to work on these as I travel. I estimate about 3 hours per boat to be at this stage of construction. Many more hours are needed for the details. The last picture shows a profile for reference.

Bob - thanks for your comment about the masts.  I reckon she'd be great ship to sail upon, as well.

Michael - I also agree that from some angles, the masts do seem really tall.  But, I've triple checked their measurements...  Gulp...if they're not right!
