Ryland Craze reacted to Claire7 in Norwegian Sailing Pram by Claire7 - Model Shipways - 1:12
Thank you @East Ender! Nothing like a photo to see all the little flaws, bit of asymmetry, but I’m moving on 😅

After trimming here are my transoms. Better than I thought, only tiny gaps! I will add a tiny bit of filler then move on…

Ok I think I found a good option. I found one of those cordless soldering kits that include a torch tip. So I can anneal now and try soldering someday later on. This is the one I bought (prices in cad$). Assuming I should anneal before brass blackening? Looking forward to boat building today.

Or simply rest the brass piece on the ceramic tile while heating it using the torch and enjoying your crème brûlée. Bon appetit!
Hint: you can see the colour of the metal change better under dim light.

The torch will do fine to anneal small brass items, as will a gas stove burner. Get a pair, or better yet, a set, of long locking soldering tweezers for such purposes. They will come in handy for soldering, as well. Amazon.com: Fiber Grip Tweezers Jewelry Hobby Craft Soldering Fiber Grip Cross Locking Set Bent and Straight Tip 5 PCS By JTS : Tools & Home Improvement (I picked this set because it shows a variety of soldering tweezers. I don't know what the quality may be, but the price seemed quite reasonable.)
While you're at it, in the soldering department, and for a lot of other tasks, especially rigging, I'd highly recommend acquiring a Quad Hands "helping hands" device. There are many cheaper Asian copies on the market now, but the original is still the professional industry standard and worth the few additional bucks. (Better materials, stronger magnets, and better clips.) They come in many sizes and configurations. Suit yourself. QuadHands® - Helping Hands Tool

Turns out husband would like to try making crème brûlée so buying the torch makes sense. This is particularly good news because I love crème brûlée.

Ryland Craze reacted to MajorChaos in 18th Century Longboat by MajorChaos - Model Shipways - 1:48
It doesn’t look like much but each bulkhead was fitted at each keel notch. Each notch was filed to fit. Using a piece of scrap to ensure clearance.
It’s so tiny! Lol

Ryland Craze reacted to glbarlow in Cutter Cheerful 1806 by Freebird - Syren Ship Model Company - 1/48
I almost literally planked 3 full sides of a hull on my Cheerful. You know the answer, rip it off and do it again. In the long run you’ll be proud of your decision to do so. Trying to force it to work is probably more difficult than pulling back to do it over. Just a heads up, it likely isn’t the last time you’ll want to do something again. I sometimes feel like the first time is just practice. It’s not a race.
How’s that for the feedback you requested😊🙄

Deconstructing complete. Offending planks removed, half of the molding strip removed and replaced, not because it got damaged, but to correct its run. Bulkheads have been cleaned up and marks made splitting the bulkheads in half. All looks ready to start again.
Best Regards …. Rick

Guys, thanks for the encouragement and the ideas. Also to all of you guys for the likes, much appreciated!
Glenn - I have read your Cheerful log many times, and with this in mind, I ripped off the offending planks. Like Chuck does (BTW Chuck, I hope you’re getting better quickly!), I use CA and only glue the plank to the bulkhead, much easier to remove.
Paul - thanks for pointing out the molding on the aft side on the gun port is too high. It was located correctly before I removed the scrap from the opening. Another error to fix.
Best Regards …. Rick

Ryland Craze reacted to alross2 in OREGON on display
You'll get the grand tour if you do! There are about 75 finished models in the gallery. We try to keep one of every kit we sell on display. There are a few missing as they were sold and not yet replaced., WYOMING will be out there in a week or so. Both models are going to the New London show at the end of the month.

I like your approach to hull planking Cisco, she's shaping up to be a very nice model. 👍

Fascinating idea. I look forward to the results! I used holly on the decks for my Fly model which I have recently restarted after eight years. It does yellow a bit over time but that's to its favour. Holly is a beautiful timber and, if you pull this off - which looks extremely likely, then it'll make for a great rendition of the AVS.
Cheers,
Alistair

Yessir Aliluke. I am using water based polyurethane (that won't yellow even though the wood eventually will to some extent) to have the clearest finish possible. I am visualizing an entire ship made from holly, as close to a bone ship model as I can get with wood. It may look good, it may look "interesting...", we'll see.
And if I get frustrated i can always fall back on thick coats of black paint to hide all my sins.

Remember, Chuck, what happened to Admiral Byng when he failed to follow orders to press home an attack on Minorca with all possible vigour. Orders form those in command are meant to be obeyed to the letter. Dose yourself up with something really powerful probably topped off with a scotch or two and let your creative thoughts run riot. Something very good will come of it.

I am resting....I am just playing in the shop. Its when I have to make tons of parts that I get worn out. I am just drafting some designs and solving some problems on the computer.
Its all good. No inventory is being made today for sure. Just a leisure slow day in the shop sipping tea.

They do offer a darker brown in this material but I selected this medium color for the test.
I think I am going to have to replace all the deadeyes on my Winnie now.
The dyed deadeyes on the main channel look so muddy and non-descript by comparison. Or maybe I should test the darker brown as well. Anyway...
The details are so much more evident on these new deadeyes. I will certainly go ahead and make a full compliment of these and blocks also for my Speedwell. I will only start mass producing though if there is enough interest. I hope so as I think these look so much better than the old ones.

Thanks for the well wishes…
would you guys be interested in dark brown deadeyes that dont require dying?
These are just like my current build them yourself deadeye kits.
3mm thru 7mm
There are just two layers for each deadeye. Just glue the two halves together for seven deadeyes at a time with thin set CA and remove them from the spru. Then tumble them to suit .
They are super crisp.
I like how Greg dyed my blocks on Speedwell and I am trying to develop a full line of blocks and deadeyes that dont require messy dying.
I want to use them on my Speedwell when I rig her. Here is Gregs model with deadeyes dyed with Fibings dark brown.
