For first layer planking, I use plastic push-pins, driven into the bulkheads with a tack hammer via pilot holes.

Depending on which kit(s) I decide to build down the road, there are some 3D-printed options for those, too. 😏 Of course, fitting a 1/32 scale engine into a tight 1/33 scale cowling could prove problematic.- 126 replies

Well, here's a quick update. First, I got the tail wheel on. Then it was on to the exhaust stubs. These proved to be an unmitigated disaster. The parts were flimsy, difficult to shape properly, and had no internal support structure. Assembly did not go well. 😑 So, instead of mucking around with them anymore I simply ordered a set of 1/32 scale 3D-printed exhausts from Squadron. "What a fascinating modern age we live in!"

Hello, Jay! If you haven't seen it already, you can click here to see Bob Steinbrunn's award-winning USS Kidd, built from the 1/192 scale solid-hull kit from BlueJacket Shipcrafters, with a LOT of modification. I had the pleasure of seeing this model first-hand at a show many years ago, and it is a real marvel. Bob's build was described in the Jan/Feb 2001 issue of Ships in Scale magazine (now out of print) and in the Sept 2001 issue of FineScale Modeler. If you hunt around, you may be able to find copies somewhere.

Here's a question for all of you true Hurricane know-it-alls out there. On the underside of the port wing fillet is a very small, oval structure, as seen in the image below: The kit provides parts for it, but I have no idea what it is. Possibly a step rung? Photos differ on its shape, and some aircraft appear not to have the thing at all. Whatever it is, it appears to be overlooked on many models. Anyone able to shed some light?

Welcome aboard, M! Take every suggestion of how many hours it will take to build this or that kit with a grain of salt. Everyone works at a different rate, and that rate is partly determined by how picky you are about the appearance of the finished model. Also, I think having a three-year-old around adversely affects build rate as well! The main thing is to enjoy the process. Cheers!

The gear doors are on. They have some fit issues that are nicely hidden in the photo -- they look fine, but some of the dimensions and angles are off.

Wow, this build is a great lesson in how far kit designing has come in recent years! Considering what the kit gave you to work with, I'd say you have achieved pretty darn good results so far. Cheers!

I think it would be awesome to eventually have Paddle displayed with maybe a map of his journey and a copy of a page from the book.

The struts are on now -- no doors yet. Each strut and wheel consists of fifteen parts. The end of this build is coming slowly into view!

Not much time for modeling the last couple of days, but I did take a moment to dry fit the gear struts to make sure they fit properly and are the correct length. Everything looks pretty square from this angle.
