    Here's another brief update.
I had to remove shrouds and ratlines couple of times because something went wrong with the necessary tension and that caused a delay of several weeks.
The shrouds are in place again (still not perfect but acceptable) and I have now started to cut and shape the yards. So I'm getting there slowly...

The pictures show today's status of Jalouse.
    All the best

Hi to all.  I have recently started on the Occ Cre Polaris as a first build.

About 50 years ago I built a lot of Airfix and Revell plastic kits as a kid but wooden building is a new, daunting and fascinating challenge.

As I’m waiting for a cataract operation I’m finding the rope work and blocks quite challenging even with an illuminated magnifier!

I only discovered this site when most of the way through the build, so won’t be posting a log though intend to do so for the next one, which will probably be the Dusek Golden Hind.

Thanks for all the tips that I have read so far and it is so good to come across a web community which encourages and doesn’t carp or criticise.

    best wishes to all

    Bob

Congratulations! With all of the advantages offered by modern kit designs, many modelers wouldn't even have attempted a challenge like an old Scientific kit. Like Duane said, you should get bonus points both for working with that particular kit and for tackling a clipper as a first subject. Well done!

So I just now finished putting the second coat of epoxy on the coamings. This was such a small amount of epoxy (one squirt each of resin and hardener) that I announced to the womenfolk that I wasn't going to change into my grubbies for the job. Doubt was expressed about whether I could do this without making a mess. Ten minutes later, upon coming in from the garage, the following conversation was had:

    Me: "I'm done."
Wife: "Did you get any on you?"
    Me: "No."
Daughter: "Then I owe Mom five bucks."

I want to let everybody know that this model earned a SILVER award at the WI Maritime Museum's 44th Annual contest (virtual this year) last night.  It was entered in the Scratch Built category.
    Congratulations to Eric.

Oooooh ... look what the UPS guy brought!

Notice that the can on the far left is dented, as is one of the other cans where you can't see it. The cans are surprisingly flimsy, and they were shipped swaddled only in bubble wrap -- no Styrofoam board, no rigid cardboard. Pretty iffy packing for a fairly heavy and apparently easy to damage product. Just happy the United Parcel Smashers didn't destroy this shipment, too. Will probably try to get started with the primer tomorrow.

Interestingly, my last few card model shipments from Poland came clad in armor-like packaging and arrived in great shape.

Ugh -- the paint (or lack of it) saga continues. The new shipment of paint was supposed to be picked up by UPS on the 21st for delivery by the 23rd. Friday evening came and went -- still no paint. UPS tracking number turns up no info. I called the company on Saturday, but the customer service guy was out until Monday. Monday morning I contacted him by email and was assured that he would get hold of the warehouse manager and figure out where my paint was. Then nothing. This morning I emailed again, asking for a status update. <crickets> So this afternoon I sent yet another email -- an ultimatum this time: expedite my order or refund my money. We'll see how they respond.

While waiting for paint to arrive (no ETA yet), I took care of a few miscellaneous bits. First, I trimmed the thwart to fit.

Then I wiped out the remaining resin dust with a damp rag, followed by a start on taping up the rails. No pics of the last item -- just tape, dontcha know.

Okay, I just finished applying epoxy coat #3. Yes, I know that this picture of the third coat of epoxy looks exactly like the picture of the second coat of epoxy (Is it indeed a new picture? Or is he just saying it's a new picture? You can never be certain, can you? 😋 ). The difference is that this coat should be substantially smoother once it dries. Hopefully.

After this coat dries, I will need to touch up a few low spots in the seams and some wire holes that didn't quite magically fill in as the instructions suggested they would. Then it's on to finishing the interior.

Well, Mr. Pitt and I are the same age, both of us being in our silver-back years, so to speak. He, of course, has movie-star good looks because, well, he's a movie star, obviously. As for me, no mothers have shrieked upon seeing my visage and hurried away in the opposite direction while covering their child's eyes, so I'll content myself with that. 😎

    Quick update:

Once I realized that I still had a coat of epoxy to do, both inside and out, I became alarmed at my dwindling supplies of resin and hardener. Interestingly, when I contacted CLC, they told me that approximately 1/3 of the builders for this kit would have epoxy left over, 1/3 would have "just enough," and 1/3 would run short. Now pardon me for being naive, but I'm thinking that if a company knows that 1/3 of its customers are going to run short of a material needed to complete a kit, then that means the company isn't including enough of that material in the kit to begin with! But apparently not. I couldn't convince the company to comp me an extra bit of resin and hardener, but they did agree to send some to me sans shipping charge.

I haven't gotten any sanding done since last weekend because the admiral decided to clean a large area rug in the garage, and it was suggested that very fine epoxy dust and rug cleaning were not compatible. 🤔  This weekend I will have the garage to myself again.

This model won a Gold award last night at the WI Maritime Museum's 44th annual contest (virtual this year).  Dan entered in the Advanced category (he's won previous Gold awards so one must enter the next higher category each time until reaching the Advanced level).  The sail details received nice comments.

I too like his sawhorses.  I have used sawhorses before but I really like his version and I will blatantly copy his version at some point.

I have spent many hours on this model, its in full paint. It's my first and I just wanted to make it look as real as possible. Oz

    Hi
I recently came across a Corel Flattie, started and abandoned 17 years ago by my then 13yo son when he found it beyond his abilities. Carefully stored away ever since, I was inspired to take it on. So far so good. At every step, I find I am wondering “but how do I do that?”
So I was delighted to find MSW forum.
I have a little seafaring heritage. My great great grandfather was an English merchant seaman, lost at sea off a schooner in the Bay of Biscay in 1879, leaving his wife and 3 sons destitute. And my grandfather served some years in the Royal Navy.
I have found the images on this forum both inspiring and daunting. Hopefully the Flattie is an appropriate starting point for a person with some amateur boxmaking, woodcarving and woodturning experience. My wife has kindly chipped in with some acrylic painting expertise, and a hair curling wand for plank bending.
    sincerely
    Darryl

Bulkhead prep to on the front to get some nice bevel was some guesswork and working one plank along the surface but it seemed to work out ok so far.  Guess I'll know for sure when I start the outer planking!

My wife was unimpressed by the new use of her colorful clips raided from her office...

Lower gun deck planking.  I decided to split in two halves to lay the planking down.  Used CA glue to lay the planking and made a few mistakes on getting it square.  Used a Sharpe for calking and pencil for the treenail marks.  Used a Honey Maple stain on the deck.  A little darker than I had planned but it worked out OK.

    Final varnish and stain

Here I how is did the attachment of the lower gun deck.  I wasn't thrilled with how I got the final deck as the fore and aft sections came gapped out a bit.  But as they were being covered over by the upper gun deck I didn't loose any sleep over it.  I'll probably loose some sleep when I do the upper deck!

Now that I'm posting these pictures it occurred to me what a mess my workspace is.  I'll 5S it up and post more of my build tomorrow.  Thanks!

Progress continues.  The forward castle (front porch) is complete and ready to be mounted.

As mentioned in an earlier post, I had issues with the trim becoming damaged during the painting process due to the moisture in the paint (a break in the structure and curling).  You can see one such place on the port side.  And a close up of the same location:  Red painted thread.

Some detail on the stern castle completed:  This includes the under deck windlass, the above deck capstan and the forward wall of the stern castle (billboard).

The capstan from another angle.  I still have not figured out what it is for.

Up Next:  Some blocks and deadeyes.  I also want to mount the model on a base before I start the rigging process.

It's DONE!   I have FINISHED my very first wood ship model!  Whee-ha!  I have learned so much... thank you, thank you, for all of your suggestions, comments, and encouraging words!   It was a huge learning curve for me, and looking at the instructions for the Norwegian Sailing Pram (my next project which arrived yesterday), I can see its going be another giant learning curve!
But I'm enjoying learning new things about myself (patience comes to mind), and even with frustration and not knowing what I am doing, its still been fun!  Here's the final pics...  lots of mistakes along the way, but I am ok with everything, given all that I learned!  Again, thanks!

I used Red Oak Minwax wood finish on the base and on the thwarts.  Size 18 yellow twine for the becket.
I could've spent more time on the oars, but I was concerned about breaking them, so I decided to stop.  In looking at the pictures, you can see the frayed planks, excess glue, and many other imperfections, but still, I am happy with my first-time results!

PS - Tholes are difficult.  I am glad they supplied 12 inches of dowel, even though only 4" are needed, since I used several extra inches in trial and error!

Okay, now we're cookin'! This is the first coat of exterior top color. It's a polyurethane marine paint, so it dries like a hard shell and will add a little something to the hull's integrity. The paint is rolled on with a foam roller, and then I tipped out the bubbles with a soft, angled brush. I decided I didn't like the recommended disposable foam brushes for the latter task -- the regular brush gives me much better control. There are also two coats of interior top color already done, though obviously not visible in this image. 😉 Both interior and exterior will get a minimum of three coats, and the paint coverage has been good, so a fourth is definitely a possibility. Sand -- paint -- wait -- repeat. 😜
