ccoyle reacted to Old Collingwood in HMS Hood by Old Collingwood - Flyhawk - 1/700 - PLASTIC - After her explosion.
I have been doing a bit of photo editing in my Lightroom and decided to re post these - they show the damage to the upper bridge after that German shell passed through it, and a general scene of both remaining hull parts before she sank.
OC.

Okay, mystery solved -- and boy do I feel a little sheepish about the whole episode! It turns out there is no missing disk. Instead, part 34d wraps three times around the top of the cylinder formed by 34c. Derp!!

Trust me, folks, I have pored over the parts sheets and diagrams multiple times, and I have built many radial engines from paper. The indicated part is missing. I will figure out a way around this issue, and when I do, you'll all be the first to know. 😉

Nope. E is the base for the two cylinder heads and fits inside the smaller shaded circle on the un-numbered, missing part.

Nope. 34e is the base for the cylinder heads and is narrower in diameter than the missing part, as indicated by the lighter circle inside the dark ring on the missing piece. Obviously, the head assembly has to sit on something, but the something isn't anywhere to be found in the kit. This is a first for me.

Small problem -- the indicated part does not exist (34d is just an edge strip), neither as a printed part, a laser-cut element, nor even a numbered part in the diagram. Strange. Gonna have to mull this one over a bit -- the needed part is too big to conveniently cut out with my hole punch.

14 cylinders x 15 parts per cylinder = 210 parts. 🤪
So far I have cut out 70 parts and assembled 32 of them.
To be continued . . .

ccoyle reacted to Jesús Reina in New sailor from Seville (Spain)
Hello everyone. My name is Jesus, I am from Seville (Spain) and I am passionate about modeling. So far I have assembled several commercial kits, but I have always wanted to build "from scratch". A year ago I embarked on the construction of HMS Victory from some old plans that I found. I hope to learn a lot from all the teachers here. I also apologize since my English is very basic and I have to use the translator. Greetings

Upper & Lower Foremast Ramshead block
Hi Guys,
First of all I would like to take the opportunity to give a big thanks to some of my fellow modelers and followers of my log. Especially @ccoyle @Knocklouder @Baker @CiscoH @BenD @Cathead @BobG @goetzi73 @Barbossa @VTHokiEE @Paul Le Wol
If I forget some folks, I'm sorry, I want to thank you too! If you're new here, grab a chair and welcome!
Back to the shipyard....
I have started on the blocks that hoist the yards of the Foremast. These blocks are large and the load is distributed over quite a few discs. I believe these blocks are called Ramshead blocks. For this ship there is an upper block and lower block per mast. I can use the standard plywood things from the kit, but I didn't think they really fit with the overall appearance of the ship.....so I'll have to scratch them. To make them on this scale.... that's a challenge...... I tried to make them out of a solid piece of walnut and tried to mill the slots. That didn't worked out at all. I know, it's probably my skill and tools that's the problem....
In the end I came up with a sandwich construction that is also called lamination in wood construction. you glue a number of layers together as is also done with plywood, however, now completely made of walnut.
It starts with a drawing to scale.... I have to work with 0.5mm thin veneer and 0.8mm for the discs.
The discs are 6mm and 4.5mm in diameter.
Upper block
the 0.5mm veneer I had in my stash, the 0,8mm I didn't. So I had to use my tablesaw to cut these.....
In the end I used a slicer to cut all my lengths needed for the parts....
All the parts waiting on assembling
second stage where some of the parts are placed and glued....
Then all the lengths glued together to form a whole....
After this I shaped the block in it's final dimensions and shape.....
Lower block
The proces to make the lower block is exactly the same as the upper. So I left all the steps in between behind and show you the end result....
Both self made blocks besides the plywood parts provided within the kit....
To compare the size of the blocks with my index finger....
And that's done for the Ramshead blocks of the Foremast. It was nice to work with wood again after all that sewing work....
Thanks for following me and see you soon,

ccoyle reacted to mor54 in SAAR 3 Missile Boat by mor54 - 1/100 scale - CARD
Hello all, the first warship build threat I want to present to this forum is a scratch build SAAR 3 missile boat. This boats are a development of the SAAR 2 missile boats. Both were designed by Lurssen shipyard in Germany and manufactured by Cherbourg-based shipyard.
6 SAAR 3 boats served in the Israeli Navy from 1970 for 20 years, and participate in the first world surface to surface missile battles in 1973. Later, two boats were transferred to the Chilean Navy.
The model, at a scale of 1-100 has a length of 45cm. Hull design is based on left and right segments connected at the hull's deck. By this, any mismatch will be covered by the keel. Started in October 2021, the building thread is shared at Papermodelers forum.
As you can see I am recycling...
Bridge and woden deck (done from two layers bonded one on top the other.
And a hint to the model latest progres
Hope that my first thread posting is OK and pictures are uploaded.

ccoyle reacted to horntoad in Hello From Phoenix Arizona!
Hello...I am Horntoad from the Phoenix Arizona area. Been reading and lurking MSW for years and just completed my first model, the Occre Terror. I didn't post a build log because I wasn't sure if I would actually be able to complete the project to my satisfaction but am pretty happy with how it turned out. I will post some pics in the Finished Model Gallery. Using this forum was invaluable in researching information and looking at the build logs of other Terror builders was a big help. Glad to be part of this community!

A mad dash…
The last few weeks have been…busy. We couldn't ignore our cottage so it beckoned us for several days (still did some modelling, but on another ship: https://modelshipworld.com/topic/34723-hmcs-agassiz-by-gabek-hmv-card-model-1250/) Months ago we booked a trip to visit my parents in British Columbia…always a pleasure. And on our return a devastating storm hit the park where our cottage is so we had to inspect damage (Nothing, incredibly…just some clean up. Not so for many up there😢) These all added to my panic in finishing this model. So, pardon me for a lengthy catch up post…
First off, I tightened up the running rigging, re-rove many lines to make a bit more sense, and created coils by soaking line in dilute PVA glue and forming them on sticks. By this point the AL "plans" were completely ignored.
While I liked the shape of the sails I didn't like how the foot of the main sail, in particular, rested against the mast and main shrouds. I first thought of using wire as a tack line to hold the sail off the mast. But right beside me on my bench was my 3D resin printer and the curing station…so I thought I'd try something: I soaked some lines in clear UV resin, brushed off excess, then hanged them with weighted ends in the curing tank to see if I get a solid tack rope to push the sails where I wanted. And it sort of worked. I anticipated that the stiffness in the lines would make knot-tying nearly impossible so I made loops in the ends using a beading needle before soaking, which then cured into a solid ring through which I could tie them to the clews.
IMG_7455.mov
Longer pieces sagged, unfortunately. I thought of a second coat of UV resin but then I was ok with the results. The wind just dropped a little and the tacks went slack…that's my story.
After gluing on all the coiled ropes I then turned to the remaining objects that needed painting. By this time I was literally exhausted with this model and all the hours of sitting were killing my back…so I have to admit I was impatient and cranky. I should have taken more photos.
Painting the anchor stock went ok but I refused to just leave the anchors hooked on the gunwales like AL depicts. I quickly checked a few resources and found a rig in AotS Blandford that looked easy and doable. At this point an 18th century anchor rigging on this 15th century ship could hardly look out of place! Unfortunately, I somehow misinterpreted the drawing and somehow ended up with this nonsense:
I hated the lantern. It was chunky and not elegant at all. I added some brass wire and painted the interior "baffles" silver, with an overcoat that was a blend from yellow to orange. Over brushing brass acrylic on black primer of the housing turned out ok for me. To simulate glass I used Micro-GLAZE. Results were…meh.
I showed you Higref and Thonk in an earlier post…these are a couple of heroic characters that have meaning to my son and daughter-in-law. I created them in HeroForge - an online 3D character builder - and then printed the files to scale on my 3D resin printer. Painting figures is another hobby so this was enjoyable. The little splash of colour and scale they bring to the model is very pleasing to me. I posed them looking outward and forward…on their journey of discovery!
I added only one of the kit-supplied flags…
…and I was finished!
Started on the case today.
Clear skies and sharp tools!

ccoyle reacted to HardeeHarHar in Secret Vessel Morel by HardeeHarHar - FINISHED - Master Korabel - Scale 1:36
I cleaned off my new drafting table after completing the Secret Vessel, and am getting ready to pack the beer keg up and head back to the coast and the Granado Build. Before I left I thought I would take some pictures of the Secret Vessel (taken with my iPhone still), just in case she doesn't travel well.... I still need to paint the corkscrews black when I get to the beach, and I have a real camera there that I will use to take some pics for the Finished Gallery Photos. I get lots of natural light in the afternoon in my little office/shop. I have another desk coming in that will hold my iMac, and I still have to order some storage cabinets (old seed cabinets from a hardware store). Still a lot of work to do in this space, but the table worked out well so far.
