  1. Another excellent model completed Don!! Great work. I like your John Deere Zero Turn mower. I have the X380 lawn tractor with 54" cut.
  2. Thanks guys. The shop has a toilet, a big basin sink, hot and cold running water. It also has central air and heat. We are sharing a 53 acre farm with friends. We both built new houses here. He flys R/C airplanes and rides dirt bikes. I build model ships and ride dirt bikes. Paradise!!!
  3. Hi Don. Since you asked, here are a couple pics. The foundation slab was poured this week. Framing starts Monday!! The shop is 28'x40' and includes a conditioned second floor for model kit, wood, and parts storage. It should be finished by around New Year's. The 2nd picture is the view I will have from my main bench!!
  4. Hi Lou. I did my AVS build log over at the LSS forum. But I did post the completed pictures here: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/gallery/album/1235-132-lauck-street-shipyard-avs-by-mike-shanks/ I built mine exactly like Bob's prototype. Dave did a fantastic job with wood substitution and additional details on his. Enjoy!
  5. Hi Elijah, I been busy moving into a new house but have been following along. All I can say at this point is: impressive!! Keep it up.. PS: your eyesight is a lot better than mine!! Great job working in small scale!!
  6. Fantastic Lou. I built the first LSS: AVS Patrick Henry (Dave's is the second and only other that I am aware of). I can't wait to see your Fair American in full rig!! Count me in to follow along on this voyage!!
  7. Looks like familiar territory Dave, albeit without bevel lines. A lot of sanding to fair inside and out but I know you will do a stellar job. Lou: thanks for starting a full-rig build log, I will look in.
  8. Looking great as usual Dave. We are moved into our new house on the farm. Construction of the detached shop starts in a couple weeks. It will probably be January before I am back to full production. For the moment, I am satisfying my craving for modeling by building some Lego Technics kits (no glue, no paint, no tools)...
  9. Good job on the boats Jerry. I could never get them to look right using either Bob's way or the kit method. I ended up leaving mine off the model.
  10. Hi Don. We are moving into our new house and all my modeling tools are packed away. I will just have to follow your build to keep my sanity!!
  11. He talks about it in Chapter 8, around section 8.4-6. Refer to his instructions and the photos together and it should be clear.
  12. Hi Jerry. Was nice connecting with you over on Bob Hunt's site. I have read through your log and it looks like your Bluenose is progressing nicely. I will be on board for the rest of the voyage!!! Let me know if there is anything I can help you with!!
  13. Good luck with the coppering and have fun on vacation!!!! I totally understand where you are coming from with regards to getting ahead of yourself. I am constantly thinking about my next project. I am typically reviewing plans, instructions, and historical references of my future projects long before I build them. I am always eager to "get to the next one". Maybe that's why I seem to have 2, 3, or even 4 projects going at once. Never a dull moment!!
  14. Hi John. I am extremely impressed with your attention to detail, quest for precision, and tenacity to figure it all out!! I am also very appreciative of you sharing your trial methods that will end up saving me time when I confront similar challenges. Keep up the great work and thanks!!
  15. Excellent work Bruce. Like others, I also have Morgan (and Confederacy) speaking to me from the shelf.
  16. Don - I always seem to smile when reading your posts!!! I been taking it easy lately building plastic model ships while anxiously waiting for Dave to finally finish his AVS. I'm sure he is probably off in the corner treenailing right now!!!
  17. Hi John, if I can offer my thoughts, I am similar to what Dave said. For "most" model woods, if I am staining I first apply a Minwax Pre-Stain Conditioner then stain away (especially with basswood and other soft woods). I only use Sanding Sealer on wood that is either going to be painted or just poly'd. Sanding sealer will tend to eliminate the grain and make for a smooth surface after painting. Experiment around some and you will decide what you like. Hope this helps!!
  18. That first photo Dave - such a nice curve on the hull shape. I also appreciate the symmetry of your strakes port and staboard.. looks great. Curious as to the length of that hull? LOL - you put the stamped metal transom in a good place!!
  19. Hi Greg. I can't believe I missed this build log. Spent time yesterday reading all your posts to catch up. I too enjoy building plastic models. However, I have never taken one to the level of detail you do. I will tag along for the rest of this ride!!!
