Thanks guys. The shop has a toilet, a big basin sink, hot and cold running water. It also has central air and heat. We are sharing a 53 acre farm with friends. We both built new houses here. He flys R/C airplanes and rides dirt bikes. I build model ships and ride dirt bikes. Paradise!!!

Hi Don. Since you asked, here are a couple pics. The foundation slab was poured this week. Framing starts Monday!! The shop is 28'x40' and includes a conditioned second floor for model kit, wood, and parts storage. It should be finished by around New Year's. The 2nd picture is the view I will have from my main bench!!

Hi Lou. I did my AVS build log over at the LSS forum. But I did post the completed pictures here: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/gallery/album/1235-132-lauck-street-shipyard-avs-by-mike-shanks/ I built mine exactly like Bob's prototype. Dave did a fantastic job with wood substitution and additional details on his. Enjoy!

Looking great as usual Dave. We are moved into our new house on the farm. Construction of the detached shop starts in a couple weeks. It will probably be January before I am back to full production. For the moment, I am satisfying my craving for modeling by building some Lego Technics kits (no glue, no paint, no tools)...

Hi Don. We are moving into our new house and all my modeling tools are packed away. I will just have to follow your build to keep my sanity!!

Good luck with the coppering and have fun on vacation!!!! I totally understand where you are coming from with regards to getting ahead of yourself. I am constantly thinking about my next project. I am typically reviewing plans, instructions, and historical references of my future projects long before I build them. I am always eager to "get to the next one". Maybe that's why I seem to have 2, 3, or even 4 projects going at once. Never a dull moment!!

Hi John, if I can offer my thoughts, I am similar to what Dave said. For "most" model woods, if I am staining I first apply a Minwax Pre-Stain Conditioner then stain away (especially with basswood and other soft woods). I only use Sanding Sealer on wood that is either going to be painted or just poly'd. Sanding sealer will tend to eliminate the grain and make for a smooth surface after painting. Experiment around some and you will decide what you like. Hope this helps!!

Hi Greg. I can't believe I missed this build log. Spent time yesterday reading all your posts to catch up. I too enjoy building plastic models. However, I have never taken one to the level of detail you do. I will tag along for the rest of this ride!!!

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
