jbshan got a reaction from mtaylor in Boarding Rungs/entry ladder...best way to make them and space them out (edited by admin)
I did a quick search here and I think the info must be part of somebody's build log, with 57 pages to look through.
Where did you put the link?

    Checked some of my books.
Entry steps, entry ladder, steps, the one on the inside merely ladder.
    Henry, Mike's model doesn't have a gangway.

Entry steps, I believe, Mike.  Ladder would be appropriate for the inner.

jbshan reacted to Roger Pellett in Rigging instructions are the worst...and I have another question.
The line in question is called a vang. It's purpose is to prevent the gaff from sagging to leeward causing the sail to twist, an inefficient shape. Vangs were rigged in pairs. The windward one would be set up to control the gaff and the leeward one slacked off. When the sail was not set, by setting up both vangs the gaff could be left "standing," not lowered. The sail could be then brailed up to the gaff and mast.

Yes, you need to rig two gangs, port and starboard.

What scale?  If the scale is small enough dead flat black might be enough.

Sail bundles anyway, not set and drawing.

Hey Mike - thanks for checking in. You are right about perseverance.  This exercise has been a real test of character.

I see you are building a galley. How cool! And from scratch!  I have a galley kit on the shelf that I have been tempted to open. That's when my perseverance goes out the window.  Kits are fun to start, but it is harder to finish them.

The hammock rails were there precisely to get all shot up.  They provided a relatively impermeable screen against small arms fire for the crew on deck, although in this case the crew probably slept either on pallets on deck, or perhaps just wrapped up in blankets, or below, in the hold on whatever they could find.  While there was a 'saloon', it probably didn't extend the full length to provide a sleeping compartment for the crew.

Obviously the Arabian stock had not yet been introduced.  Medieval horse stocks had heavier, stocky bodies.

The hammocks would be covered in the hammock nettings by a canvas trough with a 'lid' on top that could be lashed down.

Only discovered this most interesting thread today ...

Did you actually resolve your wire-rope problem for the funnel-stays ? There are also tinned copper-wires on the market. Wouldn't know about a source in CND, but here is one in the UK to show what I mean: http://wires.co.uk/acatalog/cu_tinned.html. In this way you don't need to think about painting it in a silver colour.

Very much much like your soldering stand. You knocked this up in no time. Would take me days at least. I also have one of those useless stands with a loupe on. Everyone seems to have, so I had to have one too and almost never use it. One thought: wouldn't the large clamps not be a rather effective heat sink, making soldering difficult ? At least aluminium is probably better than some other metals.

BTW, you may be interested in the Web-Site on the restauration of the ship-yard model of the last austro-hungarian passenger-steamer KAISER FRANZ JOSEPH I (1912), which was undertaken by a friend of mine: http://kaiserfranzjoseph.de/. The site is in German, but has a lot of interesting pictures on it. A similar project is the restoration of the model of the pre-WWI tanker BRITISH EARL: http://forum.arbeitskreis-historischer-schiffbau.de/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=1136 (but it may be that one can see this only as member).

Red, white, blue and common pennant (RN) are all commission pennants and one is flown at the main mast truck 24-7 from commissioning ceremony until the ship is decommissioned, unless an admiral's or other rank flag needs to be flown.  If under the command of an admiral, the color would match his squadronal color.  If under Admiralty orders, as was Endeavour, the striped, private ship or common pennant was flown.

They are however, very small compared to past times, except for the paying off or homeward bound pennant (RN and USN, respectively).
