    Robert29 got a reaction from ibozev in HMS Victory 1805 by Robert29 - FINISHED - Caldercraft - Scale 1:72
First planking ready.  It wasn't easy, but I'm quite happy with the result.  I think I learned a few things as I went along, what I should and what I shouldn't do next time. Now I have to decide if I am to copper or not.  If not I have to be much more careful with the second planking.

A few images of the first planking not yet sanded and finished.

Finally lower part of the hull all covered with the second planking, but still needs more work, sanding, sealing, varnishing... The small gap between the planks has been purposely left so I will fill with a black filler.  Probably now I will continue work on the upper gun deck and continue the upper part of the hull and wales later.

    A few photos:

Thank you Michael for your kind comments.  Haven't visited my log for quite some time.

Finally I received the case and the table.  First I had ordered the acrylic case and had to wait to have it in hand  before I ordered the table as I had to have the exact dimensions to cut the groove on the table surface to take the case.  This took quite some time as its becoming quite difficult to find a carpenter to do something custom made.

And finally, after over 5 years working on her, covered and placed in a prominent place in my apartment where I hope she will stand for years to come and whenever I look at her reminds of the hours I spent building her.

Now I am taking a break from ship building and my next project is reconditioning my small collection of Canon SLR Cameras and Lenses, plus a 'Rollop" twin lens camera which belonged to my late father, thus this camera has a big sentimental value for me.  They are the film type and since the electronic DSLR came out I haven't used them for years and now in need of a very deep cleaning job and also some repairs for which I ordered some tools and will do the job myself.   I want to bring them back to full working condition and maybe try taking a few photos with them as well.  When I ordered the table for the Victory I also ordered a small display cabinet for them.

I thank once again all those who followed my build log and found so much encouragement from.  I hope my build log will be of help to others, as honestly I found so much help and ideas from other builders on this site.

Mort, I took your advice,  makes sense to keep the deadeyes all matched.  You keep safe too.

Thank you all for the likes, here is another update.  More work on the masts and yards.

Boarding  pike racks fitted in place and added the bands that go in between.  The mast sleeves are only dry fitted.

Prepared the mast head lashings.  In the kit manual it is referred to at a much later time, with the shrouds already in place.  I thought it would be much easier to lash them now, with the mast in hand.  The thread hanging from them is temporarily, just to keep the lashings in place.

Shaped and tapered all the yards, except for a couple of them because I ran out of 3mm and 4mm due to damaging them while shaping them.  Ordered new ones from CBM.

To build the centre octagons on the fore and main yards, first I marked the eight equal parts around the yard, then build around them with the lines as a guide,  For the topmasts I did the same thing, but first I glued the four lengths, then fitted the spacers in between.

The centre of the mizzen has actually 16 sides, not eight.  In the manual it only indicates to fit just the one length of walnut strip at the back, probably for the reason that 16 lengths around the cross jack are going to be very narrow and difficult to do.  I had some styrene strips of 0.5mm x 0.75mm and had a go with them.  I think they came out quite reasonably good.
The topgallant yards centre is also an octagon as in fact indicated on the drawings,  but on such a small diameter the sides of the octagon are so narrow that even if you had to manage to do them, probably you would not even notice them, so I am leaving them round.

    Driver gaff and driver boom.

When I came to the yard rings which secure the booms to the yards, apart that I had a few missing, I did not like the white metal once supplied with the kit,  some did not fit the yard , too small, some too big, so I decided to try and make them myself from brass.

This is a diagram from 'The Anatomy of Nelson's Ships' of the Iron for the stunsail Boom.  I found this book really helpful for the build when it comes to some detail.

I had a sheet of 0.25mm brass.  I cut strips 1.5mm wide and shaped them in a figure of 8,  leaving some space in between the rings, making the rings the actual diameter needed for every particular yard and boom. Then soldered them in the middle, at the same time making the part between the rings thicker with the same solder.  Then you can trim them with a file, and if any solder has gone on the inside of the ring you can easily remove it wit a round file.

To simulate the hinges on the boom rings I cut a small piece of a 0.7mm brass rod, inserted it in a hole on a piece of wood to keep it in place, put the already soldered figure of eight next to it and solder them together.

Take it out from the wood, trim it as close as possible wit a side cutter.

And finish it wit a file.

    And this is the result.

I have two sets ready, two more to go.  after I finish them I will also do the rings at the end of the booms.

More work on the upper gun deck.
Fitted gratings and ladders in place.

My idea is to prepare as much as possible work that has to be done on the upper gun deck before I start installing the cannon carriages with their rigging in place to avoid as much as possible handling on deck after cannons are in place. At the same time I want to avoid installing the fixings on the upper deck to have more elbow space to fit the carriages and rig them in place.

Skid Beam Assembly and Bitt Pins ready and checked they fit well on upper gun deck with quarter deck (446) in place.

Upper gun deck screen bulkhead trimmed and ready to be fitted. Balusters for stairs and part of the pillars prepared as well.

This is how the lanterns are to be fitted.  Wiring will be done when everything is in place just before I install the quarterdeck.

Acrylic case and table ready to take HMS Victory.

Stands in place to take the ship with holes drilled through the table,  The two end ones to take the threaded rods from the keel and bolted from under the table to keep it in place and the middle one to pass the wires from the keel to the power supply under the table.

    HMS Victory in place.

    Regards
    Robert

Looking good Ron.  Yes 0.5mm is quite thin and especially where the planks get narrower they break quite easily. Wetting and heating helps to minimise the problem.

Hi Graham, as always you come up with brilliant ideas how to tackle certain jobs. Those decorative scrolls are beautiful. I had also made some changes to the scrolls on my model,  but your idea is impressive.  Keep up you good work.

Finally HMS Victory long voyage comes to an end. I have posted a few photos but first of all I would like to thank all those who in any way contributed to my build, those  who posted directly into my log, those who's logs I visited and took countless ideas, my log's followers and those who contributed with their encouraging comments and likes.  I hope that my build would be of help to other builders,  like so many others have been to me. Now I have to order an acrylic case to cover it and a table.  I will post an image of it when I have it ready.
