GrantGoodale reacted to Trussben in HMS Pegasus 1776 by Trussben - 1:48 - Swan-class sloop based on TFFM
New Keel is being drilled for its bolts on the Sherline mill using the sensitive drill attachment.
Gives nice accurate placement.
7/8" Bolts will be simulated using 24ga copper wire that will be blackened later with LOS.

Today I do not feel to make wood dust for finishing the hull, so I did other.
I recovered the material of the first building slip, which is no longer usable, and I prepared the second building slip, which I hope will be really useful in a few days, when I'll start working inside the hull.
Making these components is always pretty fun, and this is still true for this one . . .
With this slip the model stays in its normal position.
The images that follow show the slip with an overall view and two detailed views.

More images with the model lying at the basement, although the not yet removed skeleton severely limits the internal view of the hull.

SANTA ARRIVED THIS MORNING!
Following the tracking online, I saw that my new band saw was "out for delivery".....so I figured it would show up some time this morning.
Knowing they always deliver to my front door with a covered porch, I printed this sign early and taped it to the front door......
So I get a knock on the shop door shortly after noon, and sure enough Santa has come to collect his cake and glass of cold milk.
He even helped me un-box the new toy!
Now sitting in it's new home with fresh sawdust already on the table top.
WHAT TIME IS IT?
IT'S SAWDUST TIME!
Merry Christmas all!

Hello all just a small update, Thanks to all for stopping in, for your likes and great comments.
I finally got the courage up to cut all the holes in the deck and I must say all went good, and I also finished up my ships wheel.
Not much to be said the pictures say it all. the cuts were made with a 1 mm end mill bit then finished with a file.
The very first picture shows the outline for the aft hatch which I spent considerable time measuring, marking and double checking..............even though it was perfectly square and centred I had to erase all of it as this is the bow . Things got better after this, glad I didn't start to cut. The deck has one coat of poly now on it and will get two or three more
Enjoy
All deck furniture and masts are just sitting in their places, nothing is permanently fixed yet.
Have a Good Evening

GrantGoodale reacted to Robin Lous in Greek Bireme by Robin Lous - FINISHED - Dusek - Scale 1:72 - First wooden ship build
Today I finally found some time and...more important...energy to do at least something.
Finished the yard (hey! it's something!)
5 of the lines will go down alongside the mast. The rest will go to the several pin rails on the rear deck.
The 2 sheet lines and the 2 lines from the tips of the yard can wait.
I'll now "do" the mast. Not too much work...6 stays and 5 blocks fixed to the top of the mast...plus 6 blocks on the end of the stays.
Maybe the mast and yard can go on before Christmas? That will be nice.
More semi-soon again!

Really strange feeling this morning, coming to the ship yard for coffee at 6:00 am as usual.
The clean tidy work bench just blew me away!
It's like a ship yard just waiting for something to happen'

GrantGoodale reacted to Mike Y in Schooner Polotsk 1777 by Mike Y and his daughter - Master Korabel - 1:72
From both: thank you for the comments, it is really nice!
This weekend Daria asked me to find a time to build together, I was really happy she asked for it. Also, this time I tried to maintain a slower pace - the build sessions are supposed to be a moments of calm enjoyment, no rush. But it is harder with kid, since her attention span is quite short and she is typically rushing things. So trying to slow down
Fiddly bits in the transom. It is funny that this kit build reached the same milestone (hull is ready, building transom) after 4-5 hours, while it took 2 years to get there with my main fully framed build
Daria loves to think these are a pieces of the puzzle that can fit together. She might enjoy the Things Perfectly Fitting Into Other Things tumblr eventually
Gluing the side timbers with some sort of filling blocks. Everything is carefully notched and well thought trough, this kit is great! Daria got the concept of "parallel alignment" and played a lot with parallel machinist clamp.
Installation is tricky, but was fairly successful in the end:
Transom is ready. There are some gaps, but I in this build it is better to make mistake instead of chasing perfect quality:
(nevermind the glue, will clean it up when dry)
Clamping was very tricky because transom is not square and not parallel, so I did it myself.
So far, that kit is quite kid-friendly. Except the fact that every single part fits too tight and notches should be extended with a file. Bleh!
I take all the nasty parts (filing, filing, filing, filing), and she gets all the fun parts (assembly, measurements, clamping). Not fair!

The bottom portions of all vents are not painted yet, because the hight may need to be adjusted in hight

GrantGoodale reacted to Don Quixote in Rattlesnake 1781 by Don Quixote - Mamoli - Scale 1:64 - 20 gun Privateer
After weights for 2 days, my upper rear deck is still warped, but not as bad...
Question: Can I plank that and lay it down after it's planked? Seems like that'd be easier.
I'm waiting for my disk/belt sander for xmas before starting on the filler blocks.

GrantGoodale reacted to Jim Lad in Francis Pritt by Jim Lad - FINISHED - Scale 1:48 - Australian Mission Ship
Not a good day at the museum yesterday; I had several splices pull in the main rigging as I put tension on the halliards. I've never had that happen to me before so I think I must have been getting a bit lazy and complacent as I was doing the original splices. All fixed now all the rigging is on her, so I'm pleased that I at least got that far.
Although she looks superficially finished, there's still a heck of a lot of detail work to be done on her so it'll be a little while yet before I can sit back and admire my work.
For our overseas members who may not be familiar with the design of the T.I. pearl sheller; apart from the obvious modifications for her role as a mission ship such as the removal of the diving outriggers at the mizzen mast, the conversion of the hatch into a low accommodation deckhouse and the addition of a toilet (not present in these photos); she has some unusual rigging features. The topmast shrouds, running stays on both masts and the mainmast flag staff are all features not found on your common or garden pearl sheller. Why the 'Pritt' had the is anybody's guess, but they show clearly in all the photos.

GrantGoodale reacted to RGL in IJN Yamato by RGL - FINISHED - Tamiya - 1/350 - PLASTIC
Making a start on the main superstructure, there are a lot of individual stanchions to place, and ladders in the first instance.
then moving on to the triple 25mm gun tubs, each one has 12 support struts to me placed and each is 1mm. I set up my usual production line placing each one in bluetack and using a pin to drop glue in.
The lots of foot and handrails and plonked them on. The little radio shack has little vents as per the reference material so it has been bashed a little using tiny funnels.
Next are the gun controllers supports which will also require handrails.

Thanks for the likes guys. I've not posted for some time (life gets in the way). I'm at this point with the CS my plan is to finish the outer hull work, base paint and finish the cabins and put her aside for a while. Quite frankly this is not one of my favorite builds. I've attached some images of to date progress.

GrantGoodale reacted to Hubac's Historian in Soleil Royal by Hubac's Historian - Heller - An Extensive Modification and Partial Scratch-Build
Well, EJ, I scanned through Vaisseaus Du Roi Soleil several times, and could not find it - although, I'm sure it's in there somewhere. For now, you'll have to do with the much smaller version (and poor iPhone photo-quality) from Designs:
In any event, it gives some sense for the paneling and general affect that would be appropriate in the aft cabins of a ship like SR.
Here are a few pics of the Royal Louis of 1692, 1/100 scratch-build. Given the complicated nature of the carved ornament, I think this builder did a really exceptional job of using what I assume is polymerized clay. He mentions, on the site where this appears, that he was breaking with his usual method and experimenting with "clay." Really great work!!

GrantGoodale reacted to michael mott in Albertic by michael mott - FINISHED - Scale 1:100 - RESTORATION - Bassett-Lowke Model
I once again want to thank all who are visiting this work.
I am working on the painting of the sheet metal that will go back along the side under the boat deck.
I keep finding evidence of earlier damage that was repaired. Here are a couple of pictures that are particularly relevant to the rework of the side because it fits so close to the previous repair work.
The fracture line along the deck edge is the recent damage, you can see that the edge was repainted in the past, the color and patina difference is quite evident on close inspection.
I am documenting this because I am concerned about the overall finish as my work comes together, because this earlier damage and repair was not apparent during the initial inspection. The other question is I am wondering when this earlier work was carried out.
My guess is that it was carried out before the present owner took possession of it. and knowing the reputation of the owner before them I am guessing that the work was done potentially more than 30 years ago.
My scope of work does not include reworking earlier repairs to a higher standard, so it is a little concerning.
This particular edge is going to be right next to the reworked side sheet metal, I am going to make a couple of shaped detail sanding sticks in order to smooth out the fracture paint line and match the best I can the original slightly more satin finish of the original. there were two ports that were painted over during the first repair of this area I am considering replacing them even though they have been missing for some time.
