I appreciate that. Thank you. Most of the students are hesitant to go beyond plastic, and that is okay. I have convinced our principal and the Board of Ed to pay for all the necessary tools, paints, and kits. These kids are starving for adult attention in their lives, and this is one way to give it. Thanks again! Bill

Well said! I am a high school history teacher in Hartford, CT, and I have run a model building club for the past two years. Some of my students have become very interested in building this type of ship model, so I am dedicating this year to helping them develop the necessary skills, and I have told them about the difference between patience and passion. Given that my school is in an urban and underprivileged area, I have donated several of these kits to those in my club who want them. They are thrilled to learn! Bill

Elijah, I swear by that Proxxon Pen-Sander, even for sanding parts that you have attached. It comes with variable speed control, and the lowest settings are quite nice for such parts. There are six different sanding heads ranging in shape from circular, square, rectangular, and triangular. These heads are approximately 1/2 to 2/3 of an inch and are ideal for ship modeling. I have used mine repeatedly on parts already affixed without difficulties. It makes life much easier. Bill

Elijah, Proxxon make a beautiful small pen-sander that will enable you to sand in very tight places. I have gotten a lot of use from it. I believe that Micro Mark is a key distributor for Proxxon. You should check them out for many different tools. Bill

Daniel, I do understand your point, but the old Mamoli kit of the Beagle goes far beyond being simply inaccurate; it is completely fictional. The kit was originally based on the Revell plastic kit under the same name. The Revell kit, in turn, was based on their kit of the Bounty. Yet, the real Beagle differed considerably from the Bounty. Bounty began as a collier in England's coastal trade in the late 1700s. The Beagle was originally a 10 gun Brig converted by the Royal Navy for scientific exploration. The two ships did not resemble each other in any way. To be honest, I would prefer a model that accurately depicts the Beagle, not a ship that probably never existed. Anyway, I do appreciate your reopening of Mamoli! I look forward to having the opportunity to build most of the line!

This is a beautiful build so far! Someday, I would like to build this kit, but I have far too much in my shipyard right now. My hat is off to you, sir! Bill

Mike, Did I understand correctly that you would like a set of plans for the Sea Witch? If so, I have two, and I would be willing to send one set to you. I have two kits of this ship, one with the old balso hull and one with a pine hull. The plans are identical. Please let me know. Bill

Mike, Thank you for your reply. I do know that there were three frigates by the name HMS Unicorn, but sources seem to be conflicted about which one this kit represents. Anyway, I went ahead and ordered this kit. I am looking forward to this build! Bill

Greetings! I am considering purchasing the Corel HMS Unicorn but have been warned over on the Fine Scale Modeler site that this is a poor kit that does not represent any actual ship. To be fair, these types of kits are decried in general over there, which has not been my experience at all. I am currently working on HMS Pandora by Constructo, which I have enjoyed building. Can anyone speak about the Unicorn's accuracy? Thanks! Bill

Pandora by marsalv - FINISHED - 1:52
Bill Morrison replied to marsalv's topic in - Build logs for subjects built 1751 - 1800
I most emphatically agree that this is turning out to be an outstanding model! The old Constructo version bears little resemblance and requires a lot of modification, so I am following this build closely. Bill -
The template patterns are in the lower left of the plan sheet below the outboard starboard profile. Simply trace them onto paper, cut them out, paste them onto cardboard cut to shape, and sand your ship to fit each template. It will help immensely! Bill
