    Bow Work Continues
Today has been a day of painting the various bow patterns. The various patterns were first coated with a thin layer of varnish before the painting commenced. It was then a case of adding the various colours to the different patterns.

    Rails
I did use a black edging pen for the thin line black infill.

    Ekeing
I decided to paint the  infill area black.

Gammoning Knee rails and decorative patterns
The edging pen was used for the black infill's.

Please note that I did managed to make a repair to the inner bow ledge which has split into 3 separate pieces. The two remaining parts can be sorted when the inner bow ledge is ready to be installed on to the gammoning knee.

Hi, this was a fast build so there are no building notes.
Fun build, great picture plans in Japanese and notes English translation from Clare Hess's blog on Japanese models. I owe him a very big thank you.
The kit itself has wonder Japanese cypress and magnolia. Laser cut pieces and laser indication lines for matching and sanding. Warning there is only enough wood stock for completing the kit, so measure 2x before cutting .

    A New Tool
I thought it may be an idea to get a small mini saw for trimming the hull rails between the gun ports. I ended up buying the Magicrose mini hand saw (from Amazon), which arrived with a selection of different sized saw blades.

With a suitable saw blade fitted I used the hand saw to trim the material over the first gunport. The tool turned out to be a winner, noting the rail edges will require a light sand and the gunport sides will require a paint touch up.

Taking my time each gun port was cleared in turn, using the mini hand saw. You will note that I have also painted the upper quarterdeck gunports.

    Gangway Gunwales
The next task, according to the build manual, was to add the gunwales to the gangway section of the deck.  The sides of the hull had already been sanded flush to the deck level. The gunwales were glued in place and to ensure they were held in place as the glue cured I found a simple way to clamp them using some short plank lengths. This can be seen in the photo's below.

    3D Hull Patterns
The next task was to add the various 3D hull patterns. These consist of a set of 1mm pear wood patterns and a set of 0.6mm pear wood patterns which will sit on top of the 1mm patterns.

There are guide lines on the bulwarks to ensure these patterns are correctly positioned. I have added a section of photo's of these patterns in situ.

Ben, Bob and Roger, thanks guys for sharing your knowledge. Ben, I will check out the article you mentioned and by the way I have some of your brown cordage that was for the PdN which was demolished during the early stages of my build. I agree at this scale it would make little difference, but I'm leaning towards brown. Now the next puzzlement is to paint or not to paint. I'll have to work that out in my head before I start the build and after I see my planking job.

I'll be doing the Grecian and am wondering if the standing rigging would be brown rather than black. I understand there was a shift in the type of tar or coating around that time and the color was different. Your knowledge would be appreciated.

Very nice work, but I think you are over gunning the ship.  American privateers had large crews to take other ships by boarding.  They wouldn't get into gun duels because they didn't want to do much damage the ship they wanted to capture.  Privateering was about making money.  Any guns carried would mostly be mid ship for weight considerations, especially on these schooners.  Four to six guns were I think the normal.  Just my opinion.  Your ship is coming along VERY nicely.  You are the captain so you can arm it as you see fit.  - Hal

    Cisco, Hal,

I think that you’re both right - I am overgunning Grecian for aesthetic purposes, the kit plans do this too but to a lesser degree (16 guns - 12x carronades and 4x cannon). Chris in the instructions is very clear that Grecian only had 4x cannons and no carronades as an American privateer. That’s a choice I could have gone with, but in my opinion the build would have looked incomplete despite being historically accurate.

What I couldn’t get my head around was why the privateer captain / owner built a ship with 18 gunports and only mounted 4 guns. I think your explanations of how privateers were used and that looking like having more guns but remaining light to catch prizes makes a great deal of sense.

With regard to mixing carronades and cannons I defer again to Chris’s research and knowledge that as a RN 10-gun schooner she would have been fitted with 8x carronades and 2x long six pounder cannons.

I suspect that I probably have too many cannons forward which being much heavier than carronades might upset the weight and balance of the schooner.

Thank you very much for the advice and info.

    Hi!
I'm arrived to a final decision, yeah!
I'll start with Santa Maria from AL and here is why I came to that decision:
    PROS:
    It's a cheap model: 150€
Instructions clear and step by step
I can buy the kit including paints a figures
Found a spanish utuber step-by-step full tutorial really well done
    Many choises to buy from

    CONS:
    Probably not historically accurate
Other vendors may have better build quality

    FINAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Now I would like to be able to concentrate on the construction technique, without having to interpret deficient instructions or having to customize or correct the model.
I need some model that helps me to re-enter in this hobby, to get used to it again.
This will be a construction of a model where I will probably make several mistakes, so it must be cheap ...
I will treasure your valuable suggestions, get stick to Vanguard models, but in Italy their kit are really very expansive!
I'll keep their model for whenI'll be more experienced.

    Next questions:
Is there a list of other kit made by Chris Watton, not from Vanguard?
Can you suggest me the first tools that I really need to start with?

Thank you so much for your help!

I would have to agree with Chris. Out of the three i would say that the Endeavour would be the most difficult to plank and the Snake the easier. However, having built the Caldercraft Cruiser i would have to say that instructions are not great. The newer models from Vanguard will be exceptional.

    Hi Adrian,

I would agree with Chris and Mark, have a look at Vanguard’s models.
I have the “Snake” and keep putting off starting it, I would not call it a starter kit, more intermediate and to make it into something you would be happy with will need some extra effort over and above what the instructions say.  Don’t get me wrong Caldercraft kits are good, but as a reintroduction into this great hobby, then perhaps save them for the next kit.

I've been working on the HMS Snake for years on and off. I'm not saying it's a bad kit, it's just a lot is expected from the modeler to just figure out. Who knows maybe it's right up your alley.

Some day I'll finish that damned thing!

I'm with the rest of the group on recommending The HMS Speedy or Flirt from Vanguard. Good quality laser cut parts and excellent instructions.

If you really like HMS Snake, then have a good look at either Speedy or Flirt from Vanguard Models. They're products of the same designer, Chris Watton, but much more up-to-date in terms of design, materials, and user-friendliness.

    Rudder Housing Jig
The assembly of the rudder housing comprises 6 parts. Each of the 5 side parts requires bevelling of the edges to get the required shaping of the rudder housing. As I think this could be a tricky little assembly to get right I decided I should make a simple jig to assist with the bevelling. I thought this small side project might be of interest to some of the Indy builders.

Step 1 - Mark out the required pattern
Using a scrap bit of MDF I used the top rudder housing pattern to draw the required outer edge shape. Once that was done I was able to add the inner edges.

Step 2 - Making the Jig
Using some spare planking material I glued support pieces to either side of the guide lines. I started with adding the support pieces to the outer edges and used the top pattern to double check the were correctly positioned. Once I was happy with the outer supports I cut and glued the inner support pieces. This time I used the side patters to ensure the correct gap was set.

Step 3 - Bevelling the edges
The bevelling of the edges was a relatively simple task. As each part was bevelled it was tested in the jig. I used to the top part to double check the alignment. Fingers crossed this means when it time to fit the parts to the quarter gallery deck there should not be any problems.
