    Hi Mates,

Frank thanks – nice of you to comment – much appreciated needed a “pep talk”…Denis Cheers as well !

Mates -Apologies for venting on my last post. Not a place in which to do this. Your kindness in following along, posting or just dropping in is not for some builder (me) complaining.

That said - after, I decided to go outside, smoke a nice Churchill (along with a Single Malt (or two) of course).  Listen to my baseball team on the radio, and also allow for some introspection. Cigar took care of any TV-  Admiral would have lowered the plank and pulled out her sword. Can't blame her actually...

It then struck me that to rush parts that are not “fun” will result, on the backside, with disappointment. Especially given the attention that I have spent trying to build it as best that I can “right” so far. Thanks Frank!!

So I will work in this area more carefully spending all of the time that I need to not feel that it is work, but instead as a new challenge in trying to improve my skills.

    Minor update:

Found a way to add those reinforcement bits to the sails. Tea steeped some left over sailcloth to allow for a slightly darker tint.

Found that Gorilla Wood Glue is perfect for fixing those little cloth bits, and still allow flexing.

Added little dots trying to achieve the stitched look – not sure on that part. Too dark I think?

Won’t post until I really move forward – no point in boring you mates any further with this area.

As always thanks so much for the likes, posts or just dropping by……

    Cheers,

    Hi Mates,
Well sails are all done. Now for attaching them to the yards, (adding all needed blocks etc.)

Here comes more learning. How to actually attach them. Anderson has this. I also looked at the 1/10th and each rope is separate and unto themselves with each having separate knots.

Then there is the Tack knot.

    I did find this online

    Along with this link

That’s about it for now – glad that I went for the sails – very satisfied (well they are not installed ha ha)

    Cheers,

Wow! sanding time, what fun, almost the highlight of the build, only watching paint dry beats it. I hope its hand sanding, doing it by machine is so yesterday.

Well.. the Death Star is in secure, orbital mode for now, Sam.   The inner bulwark planking is basic table saw for cut to length, hand finish to length, and hopefully in the next few days... sanding time.

Actually it's both sawdust and smoke.  I still use the saw quite a bit along with a lot of sandpaper.

Whew!  Thanks Keith.  Ever since I strayed I've been looking toward the sky for wayward bolts of lightning.

I like that deck layout.  All my experience sailing has been on "little" sailboats of 54' or less.  Loads increase exponentially when LOA soars so I'd have to wing it on things like mainsheet travelers, genoa tracks and lead car system and things like that.  But I have yet to see a lead car system on a maxi.  How they move the lead car under load, I don't know.  So there's a lot of investigation I need to do.  But it's time to start packing and leave the heat behind.

    Dear Julie

The J Class gods are quite traditional and I think they may reserve judgement until they see how it turns out - particularly in respect of how you sort out the all important deck gear. I think the way you are thinking that the 2011 refit arrangement of winches, tracks etc may be the way to go.

My preferred order would be to plank the flat deck and then sand it and finish it before attaching anything that stands up above it. Trying to sand the deck planking around an upstanding deck house etc., just complicates the sanding.

Frank, thank you for your help but while your models are amazingly gorgeous, I just don't think I could achieve the same level of scale accuracy you do without all the preliminary work that seems so necessary for me, such as the CAD drawings.  That's how my brain works.

Part of why I want to tackle the stick build is because I want to see if I can recreate what's in my mind's eye.  I could be way over my head but I thought that too when I decided to make my first scratch-build guitar.  After it was completed, it was so satisfying I made three more.  While we're gone I'll be given a lot of time to think about this...  Thanks again for the help!

Hi Judi   This is getting interesting!    You probably know that your plank-on-frame approach to the cabin isn't exactly my style of building so, if your heart is set on the framework route. I'd invite Keith or any of the better scratch builders to chime in with ideas.
While it would be elegant and definitely more in keeping with proper yacht construction I'm thinking it might end up very fragmented if you know what I mean?    Considering the smallness of the final shape I'm more inclined to take the "Bernini solution" and reduce a solid block of mahogany (or whatever you intend to use) to the  shape you want.    This piece can still be hollowed out inside if you wish to show some access to below deck and window openings are easily scooped out with Dremel bits.   What you are aiming for,  as I see it, is just a slightly larger version of the cabin roof I shaped for my Dragon.  I know this isn't what you asked for but I know I couldn't assemble a (relatively) small cabin structure from frames and planks and have it look elegant at the end.   Hope you have a great holiday.   Frank

    Hi Mates,

Minor update. Working with some sections of the sails has proven to be – well not so much fun (for me)– venting here Hmmm---

I got through the boltropes – pleasant enough. Then came the need to add various cringles. Now those are really hard for me. So far the least enjoyable part of this build.

I am also not satisfied with the results. And  knowing that a reinforcement canvas wrap should also be included around each cringle has annoyed me.

Tried several glues on sailcloth bits and could not find a glue that “disappeared”. Also these cloth rectangles are to be sewed as well – just not happening.

I  re-did the martnets after buying some triangular deadeyes from WoodenModelShipKit (one of the vendors that advertises here). After fiddling around several times finally discovered how to lace without lines crossing over each other. Happy with the results.

So this area (sail details) is slowing me some.

Several of the other sails will not need so much extra work – and it will all be fun again (;-)

The tack knot is a doubled wall and crown knot.  If you just make a wall knot the ends of the strands end up on the wrong side of the knot.  You want them to end up coming down against the rope where they can then be served over.

The knot is not very easy to do in small scale. But it can be done.

    Regards,
