I used Floquil for years.  Then I switched to Polyscale acrylics.  I am now using Modelflex by Badger.  I like it because you do not have to thin it for an airbrush and it is easy to clean up.

dgbot reacted to hamilton in America by hamilton - FINISHED - Mamoli - 1:66 scale
    Hello there:

Well my summer vacation has started, which means that, in addition to building some new steps for the patio, occasionally mowing the lawn and going on a couple of little adventures, there's a bit more time for modelling - something which has sadly been on the back burner for some time now. This morning I spent a couple of hours on America - the first work I've put into her for a couple of weeks. Since my last post I've completed a few things - the deck planking, the bulwark stanchions and the starboard side hull planking. The port hull is almost fully planked but for a small 4-plank strip at the turn of the bilge. This I'll fill in tomorrow. I am not proud of the planking, but since the hull will be painted and coppered I'm not too worried about it. I will slather it with some of the acrylic modelling paste I use for filler and then sand it to a high sheen before finishing it and hopefully when all is done it will look alright. In the meantime, here are some photos of the deck area - as you can see the bulwarks will need a bit of touching up, which will happen once the hull is fully planked.....The deck could probably take another coat of Tung oil as well.....bye for now

    Hello all.

My Endeavour is finished at last and I must say that the result is much better than I expected , I had a break for one year because all the time went to rebuild our house. The kit has been a very good as a first kit to learn basic skills. The only "boring" thing were the endless filling and sanding to achieve the high gloss on the upper hull. But this model has inspired me too try to build with more "scratshing" and I will try to do it on my Sherbourne (will start a new topic soon).
I hope you will enjoy the pictures. They are not the best because they shot with the mobile phone. My father has promised me to take better photos later.

    I progressed on the cabin.

I made the hatches. They were used to store the cooking gear and other stuff.

First i had to make some dummy beams to provide some support for the hatches. I made those from some scrap plywood on which i matched the curve of the cabin walls.

I glued them in place and let them dry overnight.

After marking the middle of the cabin with the laser i placed some cherry planks.

Then i filled the open spaces with the maple planks.  I had to to taper 5 planks on each side in order to fill it up nicely.

Then using a scraper, and sanding with different grits, I obtained a smooth result.

If possible you could probably get the graitings from Syren or make your own if you have a small tablesaw like a Preac or Byrnes Saw.

I have never heard of this kit/series before.  Should prove to be an interesting build.  Question why did you smooth the hul of your launch instead of plaking it?  At the scale you are woking in I think it would have added a little life and character.

The last time I was able to attend a club meeting the 4 vol set of the French 74s came in for auction.  But I do not have the room or the facilities so had to turn them down.  I chatted with the member who bought them and he said He would work out a deal with me once I get things back to normal.  They are excellent books.

Thanks Patrick, Albert, John and David,

David, good question. I will be leaving the paddle wheels natural. They have already been oiled but now you have me wondering. I assumed that they were bare wood but I never confirmed it with Kevin. A large section of one paddle wheel was recovered and conserved. It was pretty worn -- the strong currents and the sand in the river scoured everything pretty thoroughly but there is a chance that some finish remained. I'll check with Kevin to see if any evidence of paint may have been found on the original.

Awesome.  A great looking build Nils.  But the only problem is the size.  Once encased you will have problems find a nice place for it.

thanks to Gerhard, Kees, and David,
    and all the "likes"

    Gerhard,
I`m pleased with the result so far, its much fun seeing her come together....

    Kees,
thanks for your word, a few years ago I could also begin a new project, leaving some other uncompleted, I think its the never ending challenge for seeking solutions for production methods with the scratch builds that keeps one going....

    David,
you`re right with place problem,... in this case I might have to swap with the ships on the shelf (its long enough) behind my workdesk

    Thank you,

What is the secret to build a nice bell,  as well as a nice model ship? Plan, plan, plan and for the bell, you just need some turning experience.
If you would ask me what is the best set of plans available on the market, the answer is very easy:

74 guns  by Jean Boudriot; plans with details. In addition, 1780 is a nice period, where the 74 had very nice lines with fewer decorations than in the previous century.

For the catholic, the best book is the bible
For the model ship builder, the bible is the 74

If I had only 1 book this set of 4 would be  the one

The only difference between a beginner and an advanced model ship builder is that the advanced one understand the importance of the detail.
At the opposite, at a period I did research about ships built in Quebec in 1750. The only thing that survived are the lines of the Frégate L'Abénakise when captured by the English. I could have tried to built  one but everything would have been speculation especially for the carvings which make each model distinct.
