EJ_L reacted to Hubac's Historian in SOLEIL ROYAL 1669 by michel saunier
Marc - thank you for granting me access to your pics and permission to post them. I’ve been in contact, recently, with another modeler from the UK who was also a great admirer of Michel’s work. He had just recently learned of Michel’s passing and was very saddened by the news.

I like it.... I like it a lot. Having built this ship myself, can appreciate more deeply your work.
My congratulations!!!

Johann, glad to see that you are on the mend. Your ratlines look better made with one bad hand than mine do with two good hands. Looking forward to more updates,

@shipman
Thank you very much,
also for the interest in my work,especially since I can't deliver anything new.
I have already started with the ratlines of the topmast shrouds. In this respect, I already see a silver lining on the horizon ... 😁
The hand has healed well so far. However, due to the long immobilization with splint the fingers are a bit rusty. But it is getting better from day to day.

@markjay
@GrandpaPhil
Hi,
thank you very much for the good wishes.
Hello colleagues,
after a short creative break ... 😁... we continue here again:
Continuation: Ratlines for the topmast shrouds - Enflechures
With the addition of the ratlines for the topmast shrouds, it was necessary to clarify how the futtock staves are to be made here. In contrast to the more massive futtock staves of the lower shrouds, made of served brass rods, I used a rope with ø 0.35 mm for the topmast shrouds, which was soaked with super glue before serving.
After fixing the futtock stave, I could attach the last ratlines of the port side main topmast shrouds.
So the chapter -ratlines for the main topmast shrouds- is done:
Soon I will continue with the ratlines for the fore topmast shrouds to finally close the chapter -ratlines- for this model.
To be continued ...

Been a while since I have updated but I have been slowly making progress. All of the exposed guns have been rigged.
Next up will be the channels and then gun port lids.

I cannot say for certain, but my guess is that there were removable ladders to access this area. It may not have been a regularly used space outside of battle and accessing the lanterns. I don't think I added any on mine to this deck, though I do remember questioning it myself during construction.

I will echo that painting the sculptures in a variety of color adds a great deal to the model over just the gold. Likely more realistic as well. I have done them both ways now and I love how they pop and become more interesting with colors.
On the reigns, you may look at jewelry wire from crafting stores. It comes in a variety of thicknesses and colors where you may be able to find something that does not look oversized. You could also stiffen sewing thread of the color you want with glue if you need to go extremely thin.
I have always struggled with the practicality of many railings. Real, practical, functional or simply artistic. I believe that there is truth to much of it. From safety, while there was concern, we can easily overthink it with modern safety practice. With artistic, the artist wanted to convey the appearance rather than function. Dimensions should not be taken as exact, rather suggestive. I think if you find a happy medium that you like you will be okay.

John, beautiful progress so far on the ship! I'm looking forward to seeing your interpretation of this majestic ship. Each build offers new perspectives that make each unique and worth looking at.

E.J,
Thanks for your notes - Yes, it is much more work indeed. And as you stated - bits don't fit right. I had planked the lower balcony flooring using the kit's provided template piece. Well as much as I "played with it" it just was not going to fit as needed.
So had to make one from scratch and plank that one as well. And then I noticed - Yikes - that one of the door hinges of the foredeck bulkhead had separated. Luckily, I was able to separate the framing without causing any other damage. Door hinges are now like Fort Knox lol.
When it comes to interior work your current log is way Up There - Well done indeed!!. Haven't reached that stratosphere yet. On my list of attempts for a future build. As always thanks for following this log.
Cheers,

As a brand spanking new builder and member I almost choked laughing when I read this, and in fact it is the very reason I joined (this post). Only a truly conscientious group, would bother to pre-warn us of the struggle to come, not unlike a coastie hailing a vessel during a hurricane "Turn back! Turn back! You idiot, haven't you seen the forecast?! No. no In fact I did not get this memo, and where were you sir when I started this journey?! Now I'm whitewash deep in rigging, crying myself to sleep and now you all have to come save me. You see what I did there? Hahaha this is going to be a wild ride, I may enjoy it I may rue the day, but I will say I survived it at the end.

Thank you, Mike!
Kevin - I am far from quick, but I certainly am committed. I’m getting back some of my former momentum, now, and am excited to continue climbing the stern.
I can also appreciate that certain aspects of the build seem a little exaggerated, like the raking angles of the stern lights, but that is all part of designing within the pre-existing architecture. For their part, Heller maintained a more or less vertical window framing for the stock stern plate.
If I had gone with my original plan to use the stock stern lights, it might have looked something like this photocopied mock-up:
Instead, I’ve chosen a closer approximation of Berain’s intent. Here, I’ve corrected the clearance issue for the outer pilasters:
Comme-ci, comme-ca; my happy medium between what is and what should be.

And so quickly! It would probably take me days to get that piece right in 3D printing and it wouldn’t be better.

Plastic is a wonderfully forgiving material, Ian. Whatever dissatisfaction I currently have with my little squiggles will be veneered over with a top layer that I can shape to satisfaction.

Well, guys, it turns out that I ended up having to make those side lights closer in width to the other four. After fitting of the window plate, I realized that there was not enough room left for the end pilasters. I made some filling pieces and will re-profile after dinner:

Clarification: I was only referring to the angles of the mullions between the lights (windows). I was not criticizing the width of the outer ones!
