EJ_L got a reaction from Fright in USS Constitution by Alex1201 - Revell - Scale 1:96 - PLASTIC - Boston Strong!
I've built this kit a couple of times now and both times did a few things different but for the most part I have stayed close to the instructions. Nothing wrong with that approach as it makes for a very nice model of the Constitution. It looks like you have a great start going on your build so I wish you continued success!

EJ_L reacted to albergman in Hello from the Colonies ... Ontario, Canada
Hi Stan
Wow, another fan!! I did put a short build up in the "build log" area. HERE
I thought if anyone was interested enough I could tell more of the story. Building something like this (well, the way I do it ) things are pretty crude under the skin if you know what I mean. Some may find that off putting. I tend to use whatever does the job.
As for drawings ... there were NONE available. I scoured the inter-web and found enough images and a video that gave me views at a long enough distance for reasonably accurate dimensions. Captured selected images, enlarged to the size I wanted, converted the images to "line drawings" and printed them. Below is what I made up from images. I had access to the real boat of course (belongs to my best friend) and I took maybe 1,000 images and videos!!
If you want to explore this further maybe we could start expanding that build log.
Thanks for your interest. I appreciate it.

its very nice to see a new scratch builder here, enjoy your stay and have fun...

Frank,
I'm with the others... a build log would work well in the scratch area. Hope we'll see it soon.

Thanks for the welcome gentlemen. I'll put up some more pics of the finished boat soon. Actually, I'm not clear on where to do that as there seems to be only "build logs" for scratchbuilds. I suppose I could just do a few on the build and let it run into the finished model unless someone has better ideas??
Keith ... thanks ... I've previously had a look through your J Class build as I've always been fascinated by them and their marvellous lines ... works of art in their own right and you've done a terrific job on yours. Someday ... if there's time!! I'm part way through Altair and seriously impressed with you attention to detail (something I'm lacking).

Hello Frank.
it looks like a fine model. I'm sure you will find most members have a broad interest in anything that floats or sinks. You should post your pictures.

EJ_L reacted to albergman in Hello from the Colonies ... Ontario, Canada
Hello Everyone
I'm a scratchbuilder, retired and living in southern Ontario, Canada. I scratch models of mostly racing cars from my youth (think Fangio), a steam locomotive and several half hulls of modern sailing vessels owned by myself and friends. The most challenging model after the steam engine was a full-hulled model of a life-long friend's own Trojan 36 sport fisherman. This was completed from my own home made plans and from taking literally hundreds of photographs aboard the boat. I don't know if modern vessels have much interest here as I see mostly ships of a historic nature.
Anyway, I have a goodly number of photos of the build (which I made into a nice book for my friend) and of the completed model and I'd be happy to share them if they are considered appropriate.
Cheers

Dennis,
Funny - no she's just a local sweetheart. Super talented. She also works in the movie industry doing costumes.
She told me some funny stories when she had to check fits with certain "stars".
Thanks for your kind words. Yesterday I finished all of the yards, then wanted to start bolt ropes Hmmm needed to send an order to Chuck.
In the meantime I will prepare all of the needed blocks. I also use Chuck's but do some slight detailing to each.
Cheers,

Thank you all for the nice words and likes.
I thought I would take a few more overall pictures to add on here and for my own records before she goes under the plastic while I work on S.R. I moved her to the dining room also so there would be less random stuff in the background that makes it harder to see her rigging. Also I needed a drink and that table is next to the bar so...

EJ_L reacted to Hubac's Historian in Soleil Royal by Hubac's Historian - Heller - An Extensive Modification and Partial Scratch-Build
The other interesting thing to me, about the Bakhuizen portrait is that the way he has chosen to "illuminate" Soleil Royal as almost a guilden, glowing object suggests that much of her ornament would, in fact, be guilded.
I still like the idea of using yellow ocher for a lot of the background, moulded detail of the lattice frieze, which would be ornamented with select guilded ornaments. It would look distinct from other models I've seen, and I think it would give the guilded ornaments a jeweled aspect. This is mostly an artistic choice.

As a matter of fact, Dan, this was the painting that gave me that idea in the first place. It isn't clear whether that scrolly thing represents a decorative banner or the rudder chains, or what. I was reading in Laughton, recently, that the surviving ornamentation of La Reale makes use of this motto, "nec pluribus impar" on the tafferal, which also features Apollo and his horse drawn chariot.
I have been thinking about your advice concerning following seas and carved ornament close to the waterline; if I decide to include this bit of ornamental license, I thought that instead of doing a relief ornament, the scrolled motto could be painted on. In this time period, for the Dutch at least, it was not uncommon to paint decorative friezes onto the coved arch of the stern counter. On SR, this area has too much other necessary ornament and the tafferal with Apollo is similarly crowded, but a painted scroll beneath the chase ports is both practical and somewhat plausible.
I remain steadfast that the motto should have a place somewhere on the ship, and am open to suggestions. The sentiment behind the motto seems to speak to the grandiosity of Louis XIV's ambition and self-conception.

EJ_L reacted to shipmodel in Soleil Royal by Hubac's Historian - Heller - An Extensive Modification and Partial Scratch-Build
And to add another quirk - the SR seems to have banners or ribbons running under the stern chase ports below the counter. Marc, you suggested this for the location of the motto, and I said that I never saw any evidence of such a decoration. Now here it is.
Go figure

EJ_L reacted to popeye the sailor in The Jolly Roger by popeye the sailor - Lindberg - 1:130 - PLASTIC
thanks Daniel..........I feel it already I went to all the trouble to make the stand.......and what do I do......use the stand from the Thermopylae. I needed to be able to put her at a pretty drastic slant. I did the chains, the gun port lids, and the pegs for the tack lines. I was going to call it an evening, and that's when I thought about using Thermie's stand. I did the starboard side first, installing everything, and then touched it all up at once. I have plenty of that super soft wire, found in many Billing kits. it was easy to cut and shape.
then I did the port side. here I am complaining about this small crane light..........I got better pictures at my desk, than at my table go figure.
now I can proceed with the rigging without having to worry about doing that other crap!
thanks for look'in in......and thanks to all who hit the like button Happy camper signing off

Looking great Popeye. That ship does have big tenancy to roll off the stand. The new one will definitely fix that.

EJ_L reacted to popeye the sailor in The Jolly Roger by popeye the sailor - Lindberg - 1:130 - PLASTIC
it's sturdy.......I have the J.R. on it now this isn't a remedy for all .......definitely won't fit the bigger hulls. when I get back to it, the first order of business will be to get the spanker gaff back on. I'll likely need to do the running rigging for it, to support it.
odd.......I just looked under the stand.......there is what looks like the Lindberg line logo, but the field inside is etched out. I wonder why?
thanks Russ!

That looks very sturdy. So long as she will not roll on you, I think that will work.
