EJ_L got a reaction from Sargon in Le Soleil Royal by EJ_L - FINISHED - Sergal - Scale 1:77 - 1669 Version
Thanks Scott! Not throughout the whole ship but all the cabins and the stern lanterns. If the lower gun decks were detailed out and not just dummy decks I would probably do the whole ship but outside of the cabins, everything else can be fairly easily seen.
Now for the update: Admiral's cabin is complete! Spent almost the entire day minus a few breaks for food, drink, bathroom and puppy play time but still logged in 8 solid hours of building furniture and finishing the cabin today. The Captain's cabin is next but before that one gets built I think I will spend some time back on La Couronne. However, before that I think I need to give the eyes, fingers and brain a break from tiny detail work so I am thinking that it is time to run more planking. I have a lot of deck planking I can get started on as well as raising the hull planking up at least on one side. The other still needs to remain down till I can finish running all the wiring down through the hull. Plus, the table is in a nice messy state that is perfect for cutting wood and not so much for rigging so may as well keep on with the same type of mess!
As always thanks for looking in and for the likes and comments. More will be on the way!

CDW, thank you and welcome! Plenty more to see so pull up a chair and get comfortable as this will be a long build!
That would save some work being able to purchase scribed wood molding but, I don't mind making my own as much with those new scrappers I recently bought. They work great though on harder woods they do take some time. When I go to build my new train layout I may have to look that company up though and see what all they offer if they have resumed business in Canada.

Thanks Eddie and welcome to the build. Good to have you along for the journey.
I have done done a little more work on the cabin today but I have not taken any new pictures yet. Might have an update tomorrow evening depending how the day goes. The Admiral and I are out enjoying the band Blues Traveler in concert tonight so no new work. 😀

Few more walls and some furniture are now in place and the Admiral's cabin is starting to look like something. Still have several things that need to go in before I close this cabin off. Table and chairs, and some structural components and doors leading into the forward compartments. Also the lantern for lighting or all of this is pointless!! More updates soon!

Thanks! I don't think I am going to lay carpet but, I was considering a rug...
So more progress tonight. Support columns dividing the sleeping area from the main space have been installed. Doors are also in place closing off the forward cabins. Little by little she is coming together. Next up I have started to build the table and then the chairs which are still under design. I think I am going to have a lot of good build time this weekend and if so then we may just see this cabin finished out.

Thanks Peter,
I'm not too worried about the accuracy of the model, as you said it's enough for my purpose. But the ports was way off,
No plans what so ever! Not even a picture of the finished model. That is the downside of this build... no chance to plan ahead. You don't even now what parts will come next month. I still have 2 strips from the first shipment that I have no idea what to do with. And the main halliard, I too wonder how they plan to do this... And no measurements. When placing the templates one is to count 17 planks down to mark the lower line of the template. If you didn't plank as the instructions you're in trouble.

Hey Denis
The whole hull sure looks good, especially with the lovely details you're adding, eg capstan, cat heads, etc.
It's a pity about your woes with the Landlord and electricians...some things are sent to try us, aren't they? I hope it all works out well for you.
Cheers
Patrick

I am very impressed with Marine Models Kits. Your build is a perfect example of just what can be done with one. The fittings, though rough and parting lines, are superb. With clean up and elbow grease, they are as good if not better than what others supply. Again, remember, these came from a time you cut the wood sheet parts, you have need of metal working skills to fabricate the parts and the metal parts take a fair amount of work. But if one is willing, a truly nice piece can be had from these old kits. Then there is the wood blank hull. Most if not all the work has been done. I have their ELCO 70 PT10.....the hull is a thing of beauty, sharp lines, correct profile....just needs some TLC and is ready to go. By the way, I purchased this kit for $50.00, I have some other solid hull kits that cost 3 times that, yet this kit produced all those years ago, far surpasses them.
Then you have the plans, I will press out and frame when I have completed the kits. They are works of art.
Here are the kits I have:
ELCO 70 PT10
Thebaud Fishing Schooner
America
So if considering one of these, grab you one and prepare for old school building.

EJ_L reacted to baskerbosse in Vasa by puckotred - DeAgostini - Scale 1:65
Looks good,
With DeAgostini, you seem to be getting a pretty accurate model compared to other manufacturers.
The hull shape looks excellent.
There's always bound to be inaccuracies though, as long as they are accurate enough for your purposes, that's fine.
(I't easy to get bogged down in correcting every detail)
For the Corel Wasa, I found the inaccuracies too great to ignore with respect to the gun ports (wrong sizes, wrong locations, even the wrong number of gun ports), so I made a template from the museum plans. Even that is inaccurate, since I only made one template for both sides (on the real ship, the gun port layout differs from port to starboard)
I would be a bit worried trusting the manufacturer to get all the building steps right though. (You mentioned it's difficult to change things when not knowing what DeAgostini has planned, do you get any plans from the start?)
It often even pays to consider the rigging phase while building the hull. The Vasa for example has the main halliard knighthead below deck. It helps to rig this early in the build (before closing up the deck)
I don't know what DeAgostini has planned here? Potentially place it on deck instead?
Cheers,
Peter

thanks Mark and Sam..........there is a lot more to the story. yesterday, we had an electrician who kept shutting off power to parts of the house. you would know that my computer was in the circuit he was playing with! needless to say, I shut down, rather than reboot. I did get a little more done. the aft sections of cap railing was added to the rest of the cap railing.
the fore and main masts were cut out and set in place. still trying to decide if the height is correct.......no measurements to go by on the instructions.
the first part of the bow spirit was created as well. the spirit part of the bow spirit was also cut.
the biggest thing was that I assembled the mizzen channel assemblies. I made the arrangement just a little bit different.
I hope to have more after I get through the work week. thanks for look'in in

EJ_L got a reaction from coxswain in La Couronne by EJ_L - FINISHED - Corel - 1:100 - 1637 Version
Here she is fully masted with all of her stays and shrouds in place! Another big milestone was just completed and I am excited! Next up I start building the yards. It is hard to believe that I have come this far with her and that the end is in sight. Still have a bunch of tricky work to do so can't celebrate too much but, maybe a drink or two...
I did find a solution to the tension line for the mizzen fore stays. One of the versions of the crows feet rig in Anderson's book showed an additional block with a line that was placed in between the top block of the crows foot and the actual stay. This line lead down to another block on deck that could be used to tighten the rig. While Anderson has it listed as a late 17th century development, the rigging pattern of the crows foot best matched the one on my rigging sheets. Also as Anderson's books typically specialized in English rigging and this was a french ship I took the liberty of giving the French the benefit of the doubt that they made this modification before the English.

EJ_L got a reaction from coxswain in La Couronne by EJ_L - FINISHED - Corel - 1:100 - 1637 Version
Quick update although these pics are a few days old now as I am further along. All the masts are now at full height and the stays are complete on the main mast. Mizzen mast only has the shrouds and ratlines rigged at the moment. The fore stays on the mizzen top are a crazy rigging of crows feet that extend out to both aft edges of the main mast lower shrouds. I know how to rig them but, I do not yet know how the crew would have applied tension to them. I have not yet found any leading line that could be hauled in to tension the lines. I suppose it could be done out on the ends of the crows feet where they attach to the shrouds but that does not jive with the way the other crows feet are rigged. To me these would be dead ends and not where adjustments would be made. I'm gonna do some more reading and see if I can find that aha! moment.
These pictures do not show the mizzen mast work but you can enjoy the rest of the model.
